  1. I'm not saying I'm a Betancourt fan. If he wasn't already on our roster and I had a choice between him and others available, I would probably take just about everyone else. However, I think people are ignoring the fact that he is already on our roster and will be due money no matter what. We may have a little extra to spend but I don't think you want to spend that extra money (that you might want to use to add at the trading deadline) right away before the season starts. I would like to bring in someone like a Renteria or Cabrera or even Punto but I don't think it's realistic that they would sign for cheap (1 yr, 1 mil). If they would, I'd be all for it. But I just think that people saying we should cut him loose now, eat his salary, and add more salary just for a marginally better player aren't being realistic. Remember that this is a business too and I don't think it's good business to basically throw away $4 million that you are tied to before you even try it out. It basically comes down to this: Would I (and most people here) have liked the Greinke trade better if it didn't include Betancourt? Yes, then that $4 million could have went toward a free agent or a different trade (though I think we used most of our trade chips). The point is we are stuck with him and why not see where he's at after the first month or so of the season. Nobody's saying we can't make another move during the year.
  2. Again I'm just wondering where this comes from. I'm not too worried about him hitting because we don't need him to be an offensive force out there. I'm just wondering what standards people are using to say he's a terrible defender. So far I've basically just seen people bring up defensive stats and for me, defensive stats are just too inaccurate or misleading. My problem isn't really people saying Betancourt is terrible; my problem is more with relying on things on paper (stats) rather than actually seeing someone play. If anyone has actually seen him play enough to form an opinion, then I'm all for hearing it. I don't mind using more advanced stats when it comes to hitting and even sometimes with pitching. But when it comes to defense, I think it's best to actually see the person play instead of relying on things like UZR, Fielding %, etc.
  3. I'm just curious as to what everyone is basing their opinions on. I'm not saying he's a great player but what makes people think he is the worst everyday player in baseball? Is it looking at stats (both offensive and defensive)? Or have you actually watched him play a significant number of games? Or perhaps people don't like him because there is a consensus among "experts" that he's terrible? I just think we need to actually see the guy play with this team before we write him off.
  4. Me and some buddies went to the Brewer series in April in 08. We drove in early Saturday morning for an afternoon game. The stadium was really nice and it seemed like there were a lot of good seats. As far as nightlife, we were told that Cincy didn't offer a whole lot, at least not where we were staying but we headed across the bridge to Newport, Kentucky (like a 5 min ride) and went to the Hofbrauhaus German beer hall. They had great beer and a great environment. I'd definitely recommend checking it out.
  5. I think Furcal is due about $12 million so I don't see that happening.
  6. [quote author=Drick23 wrote: [/b] Then we come to Cain. This one is tough because he can be very good player. Look how Nelson Cruz turned out, and I think Cain is more seasoned and better than Cruz was back then. He is major league ready and it would have been nice to see what he can bring to the table full time. I was a Lorenzo fan as well but I don't think I would compare him to Nelson Cruz. Cruz was 26 when he was traded and had already been traded twice before that. He didn't put together a big season until he was 28, which came after he was already designated for assignment. Cain is 24 and spent 6 weeks in the majors. I would've liked to have held on to Cruz too but Cain hasn't shown the power Cruz has. To me, Cain is (and will be) just an average offensive player, while playing above average defense. Cruz is a legit power hitter, though he just needs to stay healthy. I don't think we can really compare the two.
  7. Love Marcum, just worried about who they gave up. The Canada connection worries me about Lawrie possibly being involved but I would think that Melvin wouldn't include Lawrie for just Marcum.
  8. He pitched in LA for one year last year and one year in 2007. He also pitched a half-year in Houston (a hitter's park) where he did pretty well (granted the other half in the pitcher's park in SD wasn't as good). And then he pitched in two different parks in PHI for the first 8 years of his career. I don't think anyone can be as bad as Suppan was.
  9. While nobody thought he would be amazing, I don't think anybody thought he would be as bad as he has been. He is probably having the worst season of his career so far. He should be around a 4.25 era. It just sucks that everybody we've signed in the past few years have had career-worst seasons with us. I don't think Wolf's career is over and he can still be useful so I won't be calling him Suppan 2.0 quite yet.
  10. What about combining Beckham and Hart in a deal to someone interested in Hart. Those two to SF for Bumgarner and a mid-level prospect? Or to TB for Davis & Moore?
  11. Yes. Lawrie is the best prospect in that deal. I'd have to agree. I think Prince for Hudson & Beckham would be a fair return. That leaves Lawrie & Counsell/Inglett for Viciedo, which doesn't seem like a very good return.
  12. I think a lot of the "problems" with Lost stems from the writer's strike. They ended up losing a bunch of episodes with that. Also, I think the writers were just adding mysterious things in without really having answers to them, hoping they would be able to put in answers later. Once it became clear that Lost was heading in a more religious direction (good vs. evil, purgatory, etc.), they probably figured the sci-fi questions weren't as important. While I wish a lot of the earlier sci-fi stuff was answered, I still think the finale was a great episode. I like to think of Lost as being basically 2 parts, seasons 1-4 and then seasons 5-6. 1-4 was a lot more sci-fi while 5-6 basically focused on Jacob & MIB and the other religious stuff. Looking at it that way, I think both parts were very good, though the first couple seasons were obviously the best.
  13. I'm surprised so many people are confused as to why Michael wasn't there. Remember like 5 episodes ago when Hurley saw Michael on the island. He said that he was a ghost and the whispers on the island were other ghosts. Basically all the people who did bad things or whatever to the island were "doomed" to remain ghosts on the island for eternity. So he had no chance to pass on in the afterlife and therefore couldn't be in the curch.
  14. Does anyone know where Brian Anderson is? I swear this is like the 10th game he's missed this year.
  15. Just picked up MLB 2k10. Too bad real life isn't like video games because I was able to trade Bush and Suppan for Bumgarner and the Giants told me there was no way they could turn down that deal.
  16. Schaub Mendenhall Williams G Jennings Nicks Jackson
  17. Escobar probably wouldn't start. He wants to pitch in relief to limit the innings and stress on his arm since the injury.
  18. Spent Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning hunting near Shawano. Saw one deer an hour before we quit yesterday but I didn't have a shot because it was so foggy (I only saw its tail and hind legs walking away). We really expected to see a lot of deer this year because he had our land select-cut so it's a lot more open and easier to see. But a few years ago one of the guys who had a stake in Hot Pockets bought 1500 acres across the road from us and fenced it all in for private hunting. So now there are no deer coming or going to our land from one of the prime spots where they used to always be. I really hate game farms like this, as I don't consider it real hunting. You are basically guaranteed to get a deer (which can cost anywhere from $2500 to $20,000) where most people are just hoping to see a few deer hunting in open land.
  19. I don't think I would be willing to include both Gamel and Lawrie in the same deal. I didn't want to include both of them for Halladay so I probably wouldn't for Johnson either.
  20. I could see giving up Hughes or Chamberlain for Halladay but no way would I give up Billingsley/Kershaw and probably not Bucholz either.
  21. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/heyman-on-gonzalez-wellemeyer-rivera.html When I heard his name, I immediately thought no way. But I looked at his stats and he actually pitched pretty well in 07 and 08. He was Suppan-esque last year but if he could get a mid-4 ERA, he could be a solid #5.
  22. If all it takes is McGehee and Salome, I would definitely be in, even for just a year. Unfortunately, I don't think that is nearly enough. While Toronto would probably love to have Lawrie with him being Canadian, I would hesitate to give him up. If we could somehow sign Halladay to an extension (4 years 80-85 mil?), then I would send Gamel, Parra, Salome, and one of our other mid level prospects no problem. I just don't know if we would have the money to keep him long-term.
  23. I might consider trading McGehee for him but no way do I trade Gamel. Even McGehee might be too much considering Duchscherer was hurt all year and has only started for really one year. Edit: Forgot he was a free agent. Put me down in favor of a signing at the right price though.
  24. I don't know if I would want to spend what it would take to sign Pavano. He will be 34 and prior to last year, hadn't made 30 starts since 2004. I would take him at about $4 million or so but I doubt that would be enough.
  25. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/blue-jays-will-give-teams-a-window-to-discuss-an-extension-with-halladay.html If we were able to get an extension with Halladay, what would it be and who would we then have to give up? I wonder if Colby's offer of Parra, Gamel, Scarpetta/Peralta/Rivas and Cain/Schafer/Gindl could get it done then, with maybe adding Salome, if we signed a 4 year extension. I don't know if I am ready to give up on Parra just yet but I don't know who else we could add.
