  1. I can't wait to see the lineup as soon as Hart is back. I expect a good amount of runs to be scored by the Brewers this year.
  2. For everyone who hates this signing, tell me what your projection for Lohse is over the life of the contract. I'll take a very rough stab at it myself: 2013: 180 IP, 3.75 ERA 2014: 170 IP, 4.00 ERA 2014: 160 IP, 4.25 ERA Is that worth 3/$33 mil and the draft pick? No. I would call this a solid deal if not for the draft pick, though. I call it mediocre with it. I would have preferred they just skipped this and won 78 games this year but I don't see how it is a disaster, either.
  3. I called this a mediocre signing. If that makes me a Brewer apologist in your eyes, so be it. I explained why I didn't think this was a terrible signing in a previous post; go find it and respond if you want to have an intelligent discussion. Otherwise, I'll see you in 4 months, when you feel compelled to rant about the next Brewer topic.
  4. It gets old having to defend mediocre signings, only because a significant portion of Brewer fans seem to overact negatively. You need to consider the time value of money. This makes the deal a little better than if it was a straight 3 years, $11 mil/year. Spreading it out saves the Brewers around $1 mil over the course of the contract.
  5. There is no reason to believe he should perform significantly worse in Miller Park than similar pitchers, and a 44 a sample size is certainly no strong evidence to the contrary. Just white noise.
  6. I will second all that. Lohse has had two very good years in a row. He's projected to be about a 3.6-3.7 ERA pitcher in 2013. Does that mean I like this deal? Not really. I like it a million times more than the Suppan deal, however.
  7. I agree that none of the options are good but why not give a younger player a chance to possibly surprise? Your 40 year old backup SS is not going to surprise you in any way.
  8. No one can see the future but I will weight any reasonable projection system higher than any one person's opinion, that is for sure. No matter your method, though, trying to project future performance is difficult and with young players, VERY difficult. It will be interesting to see how that young rotation performs.
  9. I'd rather watch a position player try and get professional batters out with junk than Livan attempting it.
  10. I don't follow. Walks don't matter in the 7th hole insofar as the batter doesn't have control over it? It is a simply the pitcher's decision to walk him or not?
  11. There are many considerations that need to be weighed when created a playoff format. Fans don't want to think that the best teams don't have a fair opportunity to demonstrate that they are the better team. 9 innings does not provide a very good opportunity. Again, it might be compared to the NFL wildcard game being 12 minutes long. It runs the risk of feeling like a coin flip. Now, if the wildcard play in game actually were played against the 4th and 5th best teams in each league, I wouldn't really care. In the AL, I don't think that anyone could argue that this year, however. Then, it comes down to just being lucky enough to play in an inferior division. Not very satisfying to me. There really is no right or wrong answer here. I have a sneaking suspicion that the one game playoff won't be a long very long, however.
  12. Often enough, the first wild card team will be a better team than at least one of the division winners, so it seems like saying they should have just won their division rings hallow. I just don't really see the point of anything less than a 5 game series and even that leaves a lot to chance. When determining playoff structure, it's a balancing act between entertainment and giving the best teams the best chance to prove it. Having the World Series determined by one game would be really exciting but...
  13. I hope the Orioles win as well. It will illustrate just how silly it is to play a 1 game series. It's like playing a 6 min NFL game.
  14. Nice article on Sheets: http://tomahawktake.com/2012/10/03/ben-sheets-goes-out-on-top/ Hah, I posted that on google video (the future!). Don't remember if I just recorded it off my TV or what.
  15. Interesting accomplishment but this is his third best season, no?
  16. Gomez has always had a boat load of defensive value, so the fact that he added some nice pop this year and at least kept his OBP above.300 adds up to a very nice year. But unless he's willing to sign for a below market deal (and why would he?) I think the Brewers will just move on after next year. Two other points: 1. Even with a high strike out team, defense is still very important. 2. Walks still matter at the bottom of the order.
  17. You've mad the claim before that it's better to ignore park factors altogether than make any kind of adjustment. Have you ever backed that claim up with evidence? There are assumptions and flaws with them, no question but if you are going to say they are "more or less completely useless" (kind of a contradiction in itself), tell us why you think that. And just saying that it's because most don't account for handedness splits or whatever isn't evidence that they don't add any value to a projection.
  18. What WAR numbers are you referencing and what are they taking into account (offense, base running, fielding and pitching?). What level of correlation between team WAR and team record do you expect? There are huge discrepancies between team wins and team runs scored and runs against. Do you find that troublesome as well? If we want to have an intelligent discussion about WAR, someone start a thread on it because I don't think we are having one here. This isn't the place anyway.
  19. That all sounds like complete bologna to me. Of course players look off when the results are bad if you are looking at game logs. They also look great if they log a 1-2-3 inning.
  20. For anyone just getting into running who has an android based smart phone, I recommend the free version of Jog Tracker: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.highwaynorth.jogtracker&hl=en Really keeps me motivated to be able to see my distance and times and then compare them to my previous runs. It will even call out your splits over the speaker/headphones if you want.
  21. Do the Brewers consider trading Maldonado this off season? Elite defensive catcher who's hit pretty damn good in 230 Ab this year? With Lucroy signed long term, have to entertain offers at least.
  22. It's pretty obvious who is taking the criticism of "wooing" at public sporting events personally. There is a point where anyone would find a certain level of noise pollution (either type or magnitude) unacceptable in a public setting. For many of us, 3 hours of yelling "Woooo" does it.
  23. These double plays suck. The announcers just talked about how Weeks apparently didn't know where the ball was and couldn't get back in time. When the runner was 75 feet from 2B when the infielder catches the pop up, you shouldn't be surprised when he has no chance of getting back. I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree but either way, Weeks has never been one to not play 100%, so calling for his benching is pretty over the top , IMO.
  24. It was bad base running because Weeks was 15 feet from 2B when a pop up was caught by a middle infielder. It was a mental error.
