  1. Yeh, there is something wrong when your 1B is batting 8th AND is expected to play below average defense there.
  2. As someone else mentioned, if Melvin was OK with using a back SS at 1B for 2 months of the season, that is disappointing. I suspect he thought (hoped?) that Hart would be getting back a month sooner. I would only contend that anyone who can play competently at other positions will generally be able to LEARN first base.
  3. The problem with having backup SS's and catchers play 1B is that they likely to hit like backup SS and catchers. The defensive spectrum smacks you in the forehead in these kind of situations. Do I have an obvious and significantly better solution to suggest? No. It doesn't make any of this anymore more paletable, though.
  4. Weeks didn't swing because he must have had some confidence that it was a ball. He was wrong. Batters are wrong all the time. I would be more annoyed he swung at 3-0 down by 2 late, as it might be right to never swing in that situation.
  5. Agreed. It's one thing to call for a bunt with a runner at first and the defense possibly not ready for it. After Aoki was at 2B and the defense knew what was up, seemed silly. So what if they knew? There are lots of instances where the defense knows, but you can still execute. Gomez just did a horrible job. Square around and bunt...don't try to get a "head start" out of the box. Without the real possibility of a bunt for a hit, it's stupid call.
  6. I have never seen a starting pitcher called in as a pinch hitter to win the game. I am sure it has happened before but not in the 11th inning...

  8. I kind of expect some bad pitching during the first week of the season...
  9. Gonzalez at 1B is embarrassing. YuniB at 1B makes me want to just stop watching the Brewers completely.
  10. Yes, that is the rule of thumb and it appears to be followed fairly closely.
  11. What concerns me is that Axford has turned into a player that may have little value.
  12. After watching a decade of terrible Brewer teams once in awhile owning random teams over a 3 game series, it never surprises me when bad teams return the favor.
  13. That was a pretty nasty pitch. Sometimes the pitcher just wins. I agreed. Nice movement, good location. You tip your cap.
  14. The first wasn't his fault unless he ran threw a stop sign. He didn't.
  15. I just don't have it in me to get all worked up about the prospect of the Brewers going 1-2 to a below average team at home to open the season. It happens all the time. Just try and enjoy the possibility of a potential comeback.
  16. No, that actually makes a lot more sense them playing a SS at 1B... EVER. Someone needs to email Melvin the defensive spectrum.
  17. Bill just wishes there was a way to try and estimate how many runs good defense saves.
  18. I agree that players need to consider context when determining how much risk to take on the basepaths. That said, they can't ever assume NO risk. Mistakes can and will happen in all situations. Weeks is generally a good base runner, so I can excuse him when he makes the occasional mistake. It's the base runners who constantly make mistakes but never learn from them that drives me crazy.
  19. I put little stock in spring training numbers lot's a free swingers are defiant regarding ever being more selective at the plate. At least Gomez is recognizing that patience at the plate may benefit him. Proof is in the pudding, however.
  20. Yet we still have people who think he should be replaced, or platooned. How are those two statements mutually exclusive?
