  1. Just keep taking care of business. Anything the Cubs do (or in this case, don't do) is just gravy. If the Brewers just keep winning series, it'd be almost impossible for the Cubs to get much closer than 2-3 GB.
  2. I can't help but feel bad about tonight. Arizona had a lead on the Cubs heading into the 6th inning and ended up getting spanked in the last few innings, the Giants are so horrible that this series looks too easy on paper, the Brewers can't keep hitting lefties so incredibly hard, and Noah Lowry can't possibly continue to be so bad against the Brewers. Prove me wrong, guys. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif Just don't suck, Suppan!
  3. Isn't this the second Tommy John surgery for Carpenter? I seem to remember him having one in Toronto, which prompted him going on waivers to St. Louis...I could be wrong, though. This definitely stinks for the Cards, though. It seems like everything has gone wrong for them this year after winning the World Series.
  4. The night after Kevin Mench had that RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch, the Brewers Live crew claimed that the Brewers won that game by playing small ball and "manufacturing runs." Apparently Jenkins hitting a double and Mench hitting a triple counts as small ball.
  5. I don't think they were showcasing Wise...for whatever reason, it seems like they're trying to avoid using Manny Parra at all costs while Spurling is away, even if it means pitching Wise for three innings.
  6. Can't be much worse than Carlos Lee ever was in LF, can he? Between Cappy and Davis, I think the amount of walks in this game could make this a 5 hour game. And I'm only exaggerating by about a half an hour. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  7. Of course, it's probably just a complete coincidence that Lee's suspension will be over just in time for the start of the series against the rival Cards.
  8. I would imagine winning would generate more revenue than being exceedingly cheap (hello, Pittsburgh), but I could be wrong. As long as you don't go some crazy amount over budget, I would think playoff revenue and that kind of stuff would cover the expense of better players. The problem is that you really shouldn't count on getting that extra playoff cash. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  9. I would love it if the Brewers could lock up Sheets with a deal comparable to Buerhle's. Then again, Buerhle took a huge hometown discount to stay in Chicago, and I don't imagine the player's union is too happy with him right now. I'm still holding out hope that Sheets doesn't demand crazy money -- he's always said that he's a believer that a contract offer should be a reward for what a player has done in the past. Since he's even admitted that his injuries have been disappointing, maybe he'd take a discount or a shorter extension to prove he's healthy. If he stays healthy and dominant in '08, leads the Brewers deep into October, and prices himself out of the Brewers' range, I don't think I'd be too disappointed. Sure, it would stink to lose Benny to someone like the Yankees, but he's given a lot to the Brewers over the years and took the losing in stride when a lot of other ace pitchers would have been screaming, "Get me out of here!" As long as he doesn't end up with the Cubs or Cards, I'd feel good for Benny that he got the big contract that the Brewers couldn't afford and I'd probably still root for him when he's not facing the Brewers. Maybe I'm in the minority.
  10. Damn...lost my spot in the chat because my internet connection crapped out. Stupid dial-up. Giants take the lead in Chicago...Cubs walked in a run. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif Nice inning from Villy.
  11. Blevins is a 24 year old lefty dominating levels he probably should be dominating. From what I gathered on NSB, he throws in the low 90's with a nice change, but his calling in the majors will probably be as an average middle reliever and an eventual LOOGY.
  12. There's even ESPN employees that hate the Who's Now segments...Bill Simmons complained about it in one of his recent chats. As for BBTN and the rest of ESPN, I'm not so much annoyed with the on-air personalities as I am with the producers. To me, it's pretty clear that the producers are scripting everything on BBTN (which is supposed to be a largely ad-libbed show) when you see guys like Kruk look less than enthusiastic about sharing their "opinions" -- remember the whole Kruk predicting the Pirates to be in first by June debacle? It's gotten so bad that the only reason I watch BBTN is for the game updates and highlights...the analysis pieces are phony and are basically done for ratings.
  13. Craig Counsell's line: .232/.341/.320 Carlos Zambrano's line: .267/.267/.422 Jason Kendall's line: .226/.241/.281 Zambrano hasn't taken a walk all year and has an OBP higher than Kendall. I'm thinking on days Zambrano pitches, the Cubs should bat him 8th and Kendall 9th.
  14. It really stinks that the Cubs are beating up on teams like Houston and San Francisco while the Brewers have to face wild card contenders like Colorado and Arizona.
  15. He's frustrated because he's in an 0-20 slump and he's trying too hard to hit home runs. He did the same thing when he was attempting to pass Babe Ruth. Roger Maris struggled with the stress of trying to pass Babe Ruth's single season mark. I think the media's blowing this way out of proportion -- the guy is frustrated because he's in a slump and his team stinks. There's not much more to it than that.
  16. It'll be interesting to see what Parra and Balfour can do in Milwaukee. As for my feelings on Ben, refer to the quote in my sig after his first injury scare this year. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  17. Hell, I'm a college student. I'd use the ball to pay off loans and get real food to eat every night. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  18. I miss you, too, Eric. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I just don't feel like waiting 5 minutes to log in to post something that is most likely just a response to a troll who's only trying to irritate people. The old game threads were fun. We had a damin miller reference in the chat room here today.
  19. Buck didn't want to interrupt his speech on how baseball fans should feel about any player from the steroid era. He won't let the actions in a mere sporting event prevent him from telling us how we should feel.
  20. All of this blog talk (and general midsummer boredom) has inspired me to start my own. I'll probably add a link in my sig once I actually stop fiddling with layouts and whatnot and start writing stuff of substance. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  21. I knew there was a reason why I stopped going there. Of course, DieHOFDie only bothers to tell part of the story and leaves out the part about him saying "yeah, I broke the rules...whatcha gonna do about it?"
  22. I've seen both teams wearing alternate uniforms many times before, so I was kind of puzzled with that reasoning during the Sunday DC game.
  23. Soriano's probably more useful in the 3-5 spots than he is in the leadoff spot. I know that Soriano has said that he wants to be in the leadoff spot and that's where he feels the most comfortable, so I guess we'll have to see how this turns out...maybe Soriano will punch out Piniella soon. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  24. The Astros are a very, very bad baseball team. Sucks that the Cubs get to beat up on them for a series right after the break while the Brewers have to play a team that is contending for the wildcard.
  25. I think if you watched Ned's press conference last night on Brewers Live after the game, you could see that he's starting to get a little upset with Cappy for nibbling too much once he gets a lead. Even with that said, Ned did explain that Cappy had a couple of very good innings before a couple singles snuck through and Helton hit the gapper (Ned didn't have a problem with giving up 2 runs in the 3rd..he said the Rockies just beat Cappy there; he wasn't beating himself). What Ned hated was that Cappy went out there to start the fourth with a lead and started nibbling again, which goes against Ned's "cardinal rule" of attacking when you're on the mound. That's when Cappy starting to beat himself and that's when Ned took him out. Cappy's a control pitcher. Control pitchers are going to have some good games, and they're going to have some very, very bad games when the strike zone is inconsistent (not to compare Cappy to Greg Maddux, but even Maddux has been lit up throughout his career when he's not getting the corners). The first few innings were very encouraging, IMO. The only thing I would have done different is that I'd give Cappy a few rehab starts to get his stamina back up to par after coming off the DL...in both Pittsburgh and Washington, it seemed like Cappy just ran out of gas in the 4th or 5th inning.
