From what's been said about him, it sounds like Halladay is a pretty stand up guy. I doubt he would approve a trade to Milwaukee, only to turn around and demand a trade only three or four months later. Of course, you never know for sure I guess.

That was just bad scouting by the Twins. They had better offers for Santana. Cleveland got more for just 1/2 a season of CC.

 

In the past, some tweaks in the players contract help to avoid him from demanding trade. I wouldn't worry about this too much. Given the oppurtunity, I'm sure Melvin could sell Halladay on the idea that the Brewers are true contenders, and are heading in the right direction.

Lets say the Brewers picked him up and then they imploded the rest of the season. Maybe he would dislike Macha, maybe he would think Castro is clueless,or maybe he doesn't like Milwaukee. U never really know...

I guess I just think the chance is pretty remote. There's only been one guy to do that in the last few years (Javier Vasquez, I think?). I guess I would believe that if the trade doesn't happen, it's not going to be due to Melvin's fear that he'll ask for a trade after approving one a few months earlier. It just seems pretty far fetched.

I would prefer a deal built around Parra and Salome than including Gamel or Escobar. Heck they can have Hardy, Parra and Salome right now and they can flip JJ in the offseason or offer him arby after next year and get 2 picks.

If I had to choose between trading Gamel or Escobar, I would trade Gamel. Shortstop is a far more premium position. I think Melvin said something to that effect this past month in regards to the shortstop position. Basically he said Escobar's don't come along very often.

It will be quite costly to be paying Hardy and Halladay after next year. We need Escobar to lessen the cost over Gamel (where we can go with McGehee or Green at third). This is if we want to be responsible with our money and make a legit effort to keeping Halladay.

I'd probably go Parra, Lawrie plus two more and just see what happens. I wouldn't "make sure" we leave the best offer on the table for the Jays.

 

ETA... I'd also go Parra/Lawrie/Hardy for Halladay and see if that'd do it.

I really prefer that we dont get involved at all. This organization cant continue to make trades like this every year. We have to have a long range plan or we will be the pirates again in a few years. I understand the desperation last year to get CC and end the playoff draught but this is not a do or die season for this organization. This team is just not good enough to win a championship with or without Roy Halladay.

To be clear, Heyman did not say the Brewers were offering Gamel or Escobar, what he said was:

I think everyone assumes one of the two would have to be included, but there's no indication of which, if either, have been offered.

I guess I don't see how trading Parra helps this team at all. We just replace him with a better pitcher but still have the Burns/McClung black hole guaranteeing us something like a 20% rate of victories when they start, so how does this push us over the hump? This would be a horrible trade, I think.

Funny the one guy I don't want to see go is Parra... With McGehee, Heether, and Green all options at 3B I have no problem making Gamel the centerpiece.

I have to agree. I would much rather see Escobar stick around than Gamel. If Hardy isn't involved in a deal for Halladay he could be used to replenish something else later on.

Personally, not looking for the brewers to make a trade for Doc. I would rather just keep both Gamel and Escobar and take our chances. The only way i would trade Gamel is if we could talk J.J. in to signing a logterm deal and for J.J. to play third. I know that we have tried the whole "lets move a player away from there strong point to fill a spot we need" approach. But i'm thinking he can handle third and still lets us put escobar at SS.

We do have a long range plan, and its a great one. Build around Braun and Gallardo. The Pirates haven't had a player like either in years. The Brewers have Braun through 2015, and Gallardo through 2013. Any prospects that come up are compliments to them.

 

The Brewers are also demographically a much larger market than Pittsburg, and it shows in our TV ratings and attendance. This has lead us to a payroll about $40 million larger than Pittsburgs. We also have the ability to continue to grow our payroll if we have success. Winning the WS is a huge financial windfall.

 

If the Brewers trade a prospect like Escobar, It doesn't even affect us until 2011, and even then its of little impact. The Brewers offense in 2011 can include Weeks, Gamel, Braun, Fielder, McGehee, and Hart. Thats a good offense. We could just plug in a cheap, defense 1st SS, and have a contending caliber offense. The difference between Escobar's WAR, and a good defense no-hit veteran SS will likely still be minimal in 2011. We would also have the resources to add a real SS, if one is available, because we would have dirt cheap starters like Gamel, Cain, and one of the catching prospects.

 

This team is in great shape going forward, and it can easily afford to make a move for a dominant player.

Yep coming up with a stop gap short stop in 2 years is easy. Finding top line pitching talent now and for next year is really hard.

I don't want to see this trade happen at all. This trade really wouldn't make the Brewers that much better this year, and it would cripple us for future years... Unless Bush pulls an end-of-last-year type of return this trade doesn't help us as much... Parra will be a good MLB pitcher - I don't think there is anything we have here that I would be comfortable giving up for Halladay. If they would want Hardy & some mid-levels maybe, but otherwise I just can't see liking any trade involving the pre-arby top prospects we have.
