2012 Division Series Thread

Here's a place to talk about these four series that don't include Milwaukee, but do include some mortal enemies and a few ex-Brewers.

I know this has been said a lot and perhaps its the homer in me,but switching between the Yankees/O's game and the Reds/Giants game right now,I realized how lucky we have it with BA as our PBP guy. The guy doing the Yankees game is almost unlistenable

That would be Ernie Johnson, who I agree is just awful. Awful.

 

During one of the biggest at-bats in the game (bot. 8th w/1 out, Hardy on second base, while it was still tied 2-2), very tense moment, he was joking about the name Matt Wieters (the batter) had chosen for his son. Asking Ripken & Smoltz if they'd name one of their kids the same. As Sabathia was delivering a pitch. I wanted to reach into the TV-webs & punch him.

This might be the only way I could ever "root" for the Yankees. Any team that eliminates either and saves the world from having to endure watching will be my new favorite.

 

Plenty of cool ex-Brewers to root for: Prince, JJ, CC (perhaps the only Yankee I've ever rooted for), Gun Show George...

I thought the same thing about the baseline at home plate, then remembered something about the rule being different at home...

 

It was a great play on Ichiro's part though, totally athletic move to be able to be safe in that situation. Like the announcers said, the catcher should have just waited at the plate for him instead of trying to play cat and mouse.

The rule isn't different at home. The umpire blew the call. You cannot do that sort of thing. What's to stop a guy from running all the way to the dugout to avoid a tag?

It's not just about where the plate/base is, though. The rule is:

 

7.08

Any runner is out when --

(a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runners baseline is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely

So I think Ichiro was more than three feet off his baseline & should have been called out, but it wasn't as blatant as it appeared, given the definition of a runner's baseline.

I'm not sure, you could sift through the base runner rules link I posted if you want. Good question.

 

However, three feet from home plate isn't necessarily what needs to be examined. That's just the number used in the definition of a runner's baseline.

The distance from the back of the batters box, to the back of the umpires box is 8 feet. So he is at least 10 feet away from home plate, which is where the baseline is by the definition of the rule.

 

A straight line from him to the bag when the tag is attempted.

 

Yes, it was a great play, but he absolutely should have been called out.

 

The equivalent at 2nd base would be a guy running onto the outfield grass to avoid a tag then stopping by running in a circle and going back to the bag.

I actually like the Reds and dislike the Giants so it would have been much better if he was in a Cardinals uniform. Really hoping that Chris Carpenter gets rocked today by the Nationals.
