Yelich to the Brewers in exchange for Brinson, Isan Diaz, M. Harrison and Yamamoto

Not exactly sure where to put this, but has anybody else heard that Yelich figured something out this past offseason related to his struggles in 2020, but would not state what he discovered? On the pregame show today, Rock mentioned that Yelich was quoted stating so at some point. I recall watching analyses on him and the only thing noteworthy was his stance may have been slightly closer together than in the past.

Hopefully he figured out it was trying to be more patient and letting the count get to two strikes. He was very pedestrian at best last year against two strike breaking balls. Go back to jumping on pitches and he is golden.

He was more passive at the start of the 2018 and 2019 seasons as well, before dialling in and starting to swing more. 2020 was an even more extreme version of that, and he never really got out of it.

What makes me not worry about him though is that while strikeouts are concerning, he also walked 7% more than his career average for the same reasons he struck out more. What held him back was a BABIP almost 100 points lower than his career average, despite hitting the ball harder than ever. Basically with even average luck, you'd ahve expected a BA (And thus OBP) 50+ points higher, and all of a sudden he's having a great season.

I think some of the passivity is warranted in that he's getting fewer pitches in the zone than almost anyone. Just needs to find that balance again, which I'm sure he will. The fact that he already transformed as a hitter once tells me he's capable of adjusting even more.

Sigh can we not bump an almost 5-year old thread just to post a retirement tweet?

Yeah, I don't see a problem with this at all.

It is relevant to the original thread.

As someone who hadn't even been to a ball game when this trade happened, I really enjoyed looking back and seeing how people felt at the time, as I'd no idea how valued the prospects were (given they've all gone bust since)

Makes me wonder what if the Marlins had nabbed Burnes instead of Harrison and Diaz for instance

Also interesting comparatives with "future of our franchise outfielders" then and the current batch we have now

What an absolute trainwreck for the Marlins.

I remember liking the trade, but thinking "man, this is gonna sting in a few years".

In one thread I had calculated the WAR the Marlins got out of this trade. It was negative....yikes.

This has to be in the running for worst trade in modern baseball history for an established MLB player. They would have been better off releasing Yelich.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but it certainly seems at the time a lot of posters here were very torn/upset at the deal even

Ironically, we would trade Yelich and his contract back for all those same washed up prospects now.

I'll raise my hand as being way wrong at the time. There was a lot of star potential in the players we traded. Unfortunately they all went bust, and nobody really could have expected Yelich to go from what he was to a double MVP

Terrible deal. This will end up being reason #1 why everyone will want Stearns gone in a couple years. Just awful.

This aged well

Thought maybe Monte Harrison made a big play in college football or something to get this bumped. A lot of posts in this thread didn't age well, kind of odd to pinpoint now.

nope...unless you wanted a much worse team on the field over the past 7-8 seasons - which you very well could want, apparently.

The contract extension is also totally unrelated to the trade happening at the time.

Happy with the trade of Yelich and the success it brought…of course.
My comment was from March of 2023….simply saying, especially now  before season 2025, that Milwaukee would gladly get out of Yelich’s contract if they could for basically nothing. They would gladly fill the OF with current roster guys and have more money to play with for extensions.

Yeah probably not a good idea to dig up old threads so you can "gotcha" someone. Gonna lock this for a bit.
