I know some fans have thrown this out there, but doesn't a make good 1-year deal with Luc make a ton of sense? He's a solid veteran behind the dish and at the plate, needs to rebuild his value, we have weakness with our backup catcher, and he's been a huge part of our community. There's no guarantee Pina will perform as well again, and plus catcher is a position where you need 2 good ones. Let them split the job 50-50 early in the season until one clearly does better, then institute the old Yost 3-2 split

Honestly, I would bring Lucroy back in without hesitation on a 2 year $16 - $20 million deal. I think C is the biggest question on offense, yes more than 2B. Pina's D will always play but I am very concerned about him regressing on offense.

8 - 10 million a year for Luc? C'mon man... I get it, he was good while he was a Brewer, but that ship has sailed according to his time away from Milwaukee. Lots of fans are nostalgic, and like to dream of getting ex-brewers back in the fold, but that would be a severe over-pay.

Obviously a lot has changed and the free agent market hasn't played out as expected since November when the article was written, but MLBTradeRumors had him predicted for 2 yrs, $24M:

I would agree that I think he's not getting close to that at this point, but just pointing out it doesn't take nostalgic, Brewers goggles to presume he gets something in that range.

I’m pretty sure he approached the team the offseason or two prior to the trade about wanting an extension and he was turned down since there was no interest from the team.

I wouldn't mind giving Lucroy 2/17, he's a way better option than Vogt. It's better to have two no.1 catchers on the team as it's a long season and they can play alternate games to keep both catchers fresh.

 

Maybe returning to the familiar environment of Miller Park and the Brewers is what Lucroy need to rediscover his form that made him an all-star.

It's not always good to offer an extension to a player if you're not sure they'll continue performing at a high level.

In all seriousness, Lucroy and Gomez were great sell high (or at least sell before they plummeted) moves by the Brewers. We got a ton of talent back before those guys lost their value.

Granted I'd rather have spent part of the 7.4 mil spent on Vogt Sogard Gallardo on Lucroy instead. But he'd enter camp as the backup and have to accept that.

 

I don't care enough about Vogts abs vs rhp to want him over lucroy.

I'd give Lucroy a deal - and have him as the #1. He did seem to bounce back away from Texas, and prior to 2017 had been solid.

 

Lucroy/Pina is a good 1-2, better than Pina/Vogt.

However, Vogt is a little better against RHP's for his career (a .752 mostly in Oakland is much better than a .764 mostly in Milwaukee with a few months in Colorado), and the difference on defense is apparently not even that significant anymore. It's probably not a needle-mover. I could see Lucroy getting a 1-year make-good deal and bouncing back.

Nope, you want a strong defender as your #2 catcher. If Lucroy ends up on this team, it would be Vogt taking the bullet. I'm not trading Pina for a couple rookie ballers. That doesn't make sense now or in the future.
