Just finished "Slow Horses" on Apple. Really good spy stories with a bit of a twist. Oldman is awesome.

How I Met Your Mother is currently in syndication on a local channel around my bedtime. As I go back and watch older episodes, the series finale is starting to make a little more sense. I still don’t like it, but I no longer hate it.

Finished Tehran on Apple TV+. Pretty good modern spy thriller; the Israel vs Iran dynamic was a different take from the shows/movies set in the Cold War era or the modern war on terror. Edited by ReverendBrewmeister

What I liked least about that last season wasn't as much the Mother stuff, but that we spent years watching Ted's Id (Barney) slowly grow as a person and in his relationships, and then they just wiped it out in one swoop. May as well have had the married couple divorce just to round out the awfulness.

I tend to like anything Jason Sudeikis or Will Forte do. Speaking of Will Forte, I think Last Man on Earth is on Netflix now, which is a love-it or hate-it show. I hated most of the first season because I don't enjoy main characters you sorta root against, but they changed the character at the season finale of the first season, and I really liked it from then on.

"Chernobyl" on HBO was outstanding.

 

People in USA watching Chernobyl when it came out May 2019, "lol Russia, we could never bungle something THAT bad."

 

I've not watched the show, but I did have a chance to ride a train 20 miles from Chernobyl when going from Kiev to Minsk back a couple years after the cold war ended (1993). It was interesting to see the Soviet mindset (Belarus and Russia were still pretty well linked) and perspective on the US. I remember the first time someone told me about "all the propaganda" going on in the US and I laughed and thought, "No, its only Russia that puts out propaganda." Right then and there the lightbulb went on.

 

Every country has their own "spin" and we aren't nearly as good as we think we are.

On to some HBO stuff next. Haven't done True Detective yet, so deciding between that, The Wire, and a Sopranos re-watch.

 

If you stick with just season 1 of True Detective you'll love it.

 

Started this last night, and I'm absolutely hooked after 1.5 episodes. Is it truly best to just stop after Season 1? Are there any redeeming qualities of 2 or 3?

Every season of The Wire is outstanding. I would definitely watch that before seasons 2/3 of TD. I mean, it's still better than 100% of whatever is on network TV but definitely not in the same class as season 1.

Yeah, the first season of True Detective is great. Never watched the others -- everyone I knew who did was disappointed.

I remember when it came out the Russians were slamming it. And then it was announced the Russians were going to make their own version - complete with the CIA having a hand in the disaster. I don't know if they ever went forward with that version.

I agree with FVBrewerfan - skip seasons 2, 3 of True Detective and watch The Wire (which is arguably a top five show of all time)

 

I didn't hate season 2 as much as some people but it was a really slow burn to get to the actual case. Season 3 > season 2 but not anywhere near as good as season 1 and not anywhere near as good as any season of The Wire.

True Detective:

 

Season 1 was GREAT!

 

Season 2 was horrible, couldn't wait for it to end.

 

Season 3 was good, not as good as season 1, but 10x better than the crap show season 2 was.

I'll go against the grain and say that I thought Seasons 2 and 3 of True Detective were both pretty good. As good as the Wire, no. As good as Season 1 True Detective, no. I think these seasons got a bad wrap just because of how high the bar was set. TD episodes 4-8 were the best TV I've ever watched, and that includes recent viewings of The Wire, Sopranos, and Better Call Saul (& some BB refreshing).

 

If TD Season 1 never came out I feel like Season 2 and 3 would be pretty highly regarded.

Ok, made it through both 1 and 2. I have to say, I think the point above might be a fair take. I think if two had come first, people would think it was a good season, then would have been blown away by one had that come next. Having the benefit of a well-after-the fact watch and lowered expectations, I think that helped some. I admit, two episodes in, I was really hooked and looked forward to the next episodes. Which brings me to the problems as I saw them:

 

After setting the story up really well in the first two episodes, they spent the next three expanding tangent after tangent, rather than moving the main story forward. Odd. Obviously, Vince Vaughn's performance was a low-light... it seemed like we were watching him figure out how to play the character as the season went on. And finally- Stan? I truly don't understand how a guy that, by my count, had 30 seconds of pre-death screen time, and was likely described in the screenplay for those scenes as 'random henchman #1', had such an astounding and puzzling amount of time devoted to his death, the cause of it, and the aftermath...

 

Anyway, looking forward to season 3.

So Amazon changed Top Gear into a 'specials only' show now since nobody was watching the first two seasons when they moved from the BBC. I've seen the two specials they have out now and they're still so heavily scripted, everything is staged and full of bad jokes. Amazon has turned the three guys into being nothing but bad actors who don't really even seem to have an affinity for cars anymore.

Bless this Mess, Fresh off the Boat, etc....I discovered yesterday that 80% of the shows I regularly watch weren't renewed. Not sure if I wanna watch Brooklyn 99 anymore, either.

Just watched the first 2 episodes of wandavision. It's pretty cute and I kinda feel like that always sunny conspiracy board meme right now.
