Derek Johnson leaving to go to Reds

What??? Per Rosenthal.

Someone talk me off the figurative ledge.

Has to either be money or dysfunction. And both are bad options. If it's money we should've paid him. Dysfunction...uh oh.

We can never have anything nice. This sucks.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Wow. This is as bad a team news as I could see today.

He and Counsel need 5 year extensions ASAP. We can NOT afford to lose either.

Extremely concerning news. I wasn't too bothered with Coles, but two coaches leaving for what are, at best, sideways moves does not paint a good picture. One can only hope that this is due to plans underway to bring in someone new, but it certainly doesn't seem planned. And it would be hard to improve on DJ.

Something is very wrong right now. Our bullpen and pitching staff in general were the strength of the team and we are losing both key coaches there.

This can’t be because we think we can upgrade both areas?

If true, Stearns did a horrible job at these talks and he will own this major unforced error. There is no amount of money a pitching coach could ask for that the Reds would pay that wouldn’t be reasonable.

Stearns said they had extensive negoatiations to keep him...why not pay the man???

What possible negotiations could take place? DJ gives a number and Sterns says yes. Period.

It isn’t like he is leaving for a manager job or a team that will bring in star talent. This is lateral and arguably a step down.

Congrats to DJ on the new gig. If he truly is a miracle worker, Cincy is the spot to prove it.

It would seem he is valued more by posters here than he is within the industry, otherwise you'd think he could have landed a job with a competent organization.

This sucks. I was legitimately taken aback when I saw the tweet.

With follow up tweets from the Brewers beat writers, it seems like it was a salary thing.

Him leaving for more money makes me feel a lot more comfortable than it being a culture or philosophical issue.

They’ll find another pitching coach. Hopefully they’re investing in some high speed cameras for Miller Park and Maryvale too.

Obviously DJ feels Cincinnati is a more competent organization than Milwaukee. That should be a red flag.

This is kind of career suicide, no?

You could say that about him joining the Brewers when he did. I would say the Reds are in a similar position as the Brewers were just a couple of years ago.

Or he just got paid way more money... Too early to speculate anything.

Maybe Stearns saw what happened with guys like Anderson and Davies and didn’t value him as much as a lot of us here. I don’t know. Just spit ballin.

How much could he possibly be making? More than Matt Albers is making?

If it is about money it's disappointing to see that the Brewers aren't willing to try to keep key staff. Or if they were willing to pay up, it's worrying that in that case he still wanted to leave. Doesn't bode well for the chances of giving Stearns the salary and perhaps promotion needed to keep him for when that time comes. I hope we're all just overreacting to this, but I don't like it.

We are all in shock and we don’t know what is going on so it’s all just speculation. Firing Tunnel for example is really a head scratcher. What bullpen was better than ours year after year?

But Stearns just saw DJ carry us to game 7 with a non elite staff so I wouldn’t think they are low balling him based on Anderson pitching exactly like Anderson and Davies being hurt.
