Mariners are working to finalize a trade for outfielder Domingo Santana of the Brewers. Medicals need to be checked.

Sounds like Ben Gamel and Noah Zavolas are part of the return to Milwaukee for Domingo Santana. @RyanDivish had Santana first.

Yuck, don't see the Mariners having much to trade. Hopefully I'm wrong about that.

After Braun gets hurt, this should allow Hernan Perez to play right field and bat 5th on an everyday basis.

Initial reaction is Ben Gamel could be useful. Not much power, but also makes a little bit more contact than Santana. Extra year of control as well.

Edit: Ben also has an option remaining, which seems to appeal greatly to the current FO.

I could probably be talked into either side of the trade, but I am also someone who has never believed Domingo had significant trade value even after his 2017 breakout.

Gamel is a better defender but has less offensive upside. More important is if he has options left.

This appears to be another options-based move as Stearns finds some sort of way to play with a pseudo 40 man roster all year plus Santana has nowhere to go.

Prospect seems nice but I don’t like Domingo for Gamel. Probably close to fair.

I've always liked Gamel. I don't really know why, but I have.

I still find this pretty underwhelming though. The pitcher had a nice year, maybe they see something in him.

DRS hates Gamel so I guess we'll have to wait and see, apply the eye-ball test to see if Gamel is any better defensively. Seems like an average bat.

But he does have one option left so might as well pencil in the Brewers for the World Series this year.

I am not a fan of this trade. Gamel is probably a worse hitter in 2019 than Domingo and he doesn’t really rate well defensively.

Left handed helps with bench construction, but that’s the only upside I see.

Noah Zavolas: 18th round senior sign out of Harvard. No-no'd Yale in April. Velo ticked up senior year, was 88-91 with movement, above-average changeup, two below-avg breaking balls.

So that is the best we can get for Santana? I'd rather have kept him to be honest. Not that I mind moving him, he seems to have no place on our roster, but just kind of sad that was the best we can do...

Santana was mediocre on offense last year, should probably be a DH-only, and basically had to be traded (either him or Broxton) so all things considered I have no problem with the return.

I think our last "underwhelming" return from Seattle netted us Freddy Peralta.

For whatever it is or isn't worth Steamer projects Gamel for a 99 wRC+ next year compared to a 103 wRC+ for Santana.

I would guess the Brewers internal projection system spit out something similar.

Lefty, way lower strikeout rate, has an option, likely a better defender...Santana may have more upside, but Gamel looks like a better fit as the team is currently constructed.

Throw in an Ivy League pitcher that I'm sure the FO also specifically targeted & I think this is a pretty fair return for square peg round hole Domingo.

High-80s fastball with movement, late round pick out of Harvard, multiple breaking pitches. Sounds like anyone we know?

What do you want to bet that any pitcher acquired from the Mariners has a really high spin rate on his breakingballs?

Brewers needed some LH balance and got some. We'll need to see who else is included.
