Yeah, he has had a short leash. But he also hasn't shown anything to make me think anything other than that he's simply a AAAA soft-tosser who has no business being on an MLB roster. He's OK depth to keep around for emergency situations, but that's about it. They are going to give the guys with better stuff more of a look.

Right. His last stint was pretty good though. He's a good middle reliever emergency starter. At least he doesn't go yard like the other guys. I liked his going yard a few months ago that was a lift me upper in a bad Burnes start.

I'm with J.M.B. on this one. Stearns has a tendency to like his pitching better than others do, and that seems to be the case with Wilkerson. In the major leagues he doesn't miss enough bats, struggles with command and keeping the ball in the ballpark. Injuries and ineffectiveness have eroded away enough depth that he keeps getting chances at the MLB level, which isn't a good thing.

He appears to have a short leash but always survives the 40 man during the off season and never has been DFA during roster crunches so don't really know what Stearns thinks of him.

Maybe I just have a different mindset but it's easy to parse here.

 

-Wilkerson is a AAAA-type guy and everyone in the organization knows it.

-He has options.

-95% of the guys below him in the system are inferior pitchers as it pertains to pitching in the majors.

-The other 5% are young enough that it's not worth starting their clock and not a certainty that they're ready.

-He only has stuff to somewhat survive once through the order.

 

So that's why he hasn't been cut and why he is used in such a way. The only logical idea here is that he'd be cut and replaced with...someone of literally equal value elsewhere around the league to place on the 40-man that has options so that we can shuttle them back and forth.

 

If things are going right with the Brewers (i.e. 2018) you still need to have 2-3 guys in your system that can get sent up and down to mop up some innings. In these ideal scenarios, Wilkerson is getting called up and not even noticed when he pitches 2 late innings in a 10-1 victory over the Pirates or 3 mop up innings in an otherwise successful stretch when the Brewers lose 12-3 to Atlanta.

 

If things are going wrong, people are getting mad because "why is this scrub on our roster?" because he's meant to be the 30th most important player on the 40 man and instead he is bumped to the 20-25th most important.

 

It is possible that a better (read: depth guy) option comes along and the Brewers replace Wilkerson in 2020. If not, I'd put a lot of money on him being gone before 2021. Why? Because he will have no options left.

Bill Hall said exactly what I was going to say. He's got another option left next year, so he'll likely still be around then to play the same role as this year. It's kind of nice to have a veteran/30 year old guy to play that role so you don't have to jerk around any younger guys. It's not a glamorous role, but it's better than 99.999% of jobs most normal 30 yr olds have.

For being in a hitters paradise, the PCL, Wilkerson has done very well for San Antonio overall (not so well lately).

 

I hope if the Brewers are out of it he can get some starts in a row in September.

these factors need to be considered as september approaches and how aaron wilkerson fits in the club's plans:

 

--the 40-man roster is full, and the club has indicated that jimmy nelson and brent suter will both be activated, which necessitates clearing two spots on the 40-man. either could pitch long relief.

 

--a guy who could have returned to pitch in long relief is likely no longer part of the organization (joulys chacin).

 

--the brewers are short a pitcher with jeremy jeffress on the injured list.

 

--the brewers have only two off days in september.

 

--the brewers could make a waiver claim by 31 august of an outrighted veteran (or two), necessitating space on the 40-man.

 

--the brewers could select the contract of one or more prospects without any major league experience and take their chances with their development in a pennant race, also necessitating space on the 40-man.

 

--the brewers likely will not carry seven outfielders on the 40-man in the offseason, especially if they add an eighth in corey ray. thus, one of troy stokes, jr. or tyrone taylor may be destined for outright assignment.

 

--given that hernan perez and cory spangenberg are already on the active roster, tyler saladino is redundant, and given his injury, likely to be placed on outright waivers.

Despite those numbers, I doubt we'd see much from Mr. Taylor besides pinch running and defense. Stokes has a pretty good chance of getting kicked off the 40 man.
