Wisconsin Basketball Thread 2020 - 21

If seniors come back and play next year, is it on their own dime? If forced to pay to play, I can see why the Badgers seniors are probably gone. Scholarships can’t cover them all, right? There are freshmen coming in.

No, a scholarship player would still be on scholarship. The only one left to make a statement though is Anderson, so won’t be much to sort out.

I don't get this. What's the problem with Davison? And I'm not arguing, I see his stats this year, he was awful inside the 3 point line, but the very little Badgers BB I watched this year, he seemed like their glue guy.

 

Normally I watch 15-20 Badgers games a year, this year I watched a couple of games at the end and the UNC game.

Because he's a flopper, but more, he's a dirty player. A poor man's Grayson Allen. I don't know if that's what he meant, but that would probably be my reason to be glad not to see Davison in a Badger uniform again.

I liked the VERY little I saw of him this year. And I guess now that I think about it...I didn't really watch much of the Badgers last year. So I missed most of what you're referring to.

Plus, the "flopping" rule was put in place so he had to be more careful about that too. I haven't watched much Badger ball since Bo left, so I never knew much about Davison. But he certainly had his games when he was on - though he had games where he disappeared too.

There are two factors that control the availability of scholarships at the D1 and D2 levels. The NCAA scholarship limits per sport and whether or not the school is fully funded. For D1 fall sports, seniors who have scholarships and who will be using the extra year of eligibility will not count against the team’s scholarship limit for the 2021-22 season. The D2 level has not provided any waivers, so there is no potential for D2 programs to offer additional scholarship money for fall sports recruits.

 

This does not mean a college will go over the limit of maximum scholarships. Each school will decide how many scholarships they can fund for each team depending on their budget. In a recent survey, 80% of college coaches said they do not plan on cutting scholarships as part of their budget cutting measures. For recruits pursuing an athletic scholarship, hopefully this means the maximum, and possibly over the maximum number of scholarships, will be available for the 2021-22 school year.

 

Here is an example of how this could play out for a college team:

 

A fully funded NCAA D1 FBS football team has a maximum of 85 scholarships. All D1 FBS scholarships are full-rides.

For the 2020-21 season, the team has 25 seniors on scholarship. Let’s say all of these seniors get an extra year of eligibility.

For the 2021-22 school year, this program could bring back up to 25 seniors and all of those seniors are eligible to keep their scholarships.

If the school is able to fund the maximum number of scholarships it can for the 2021-22 school year, they could have 110 athletes on scholarships. That means 25 returning seniors and 85 others.

The determining factor is whether or not a school can afford to give scholarships over the maximum.

Reuvers could be POY material in the A10 and a major piece at every major 7 cinference. He looked like a guy who needed a scene change. Feel like everyone even halfway thinking about playing again next year may take a transfer flyer. Going to be roster chaos.

Most candidates tend to request their names be confidential and likely only "finalists" must be announced. With the posting for the assistant openings closing on the 2nd of April, I have to think Moseley will be interviewing candidates at the final four. Until then (or more specifically through 3/31) I am guessing she is spending a lot of time recruiting as the "contact period" ends at the end of March for quite a few months. Can have players "on campus" April 9-11. Her best player at BU and 4-year starter at PG just entered the grad transfer portal today...maybe?

Odd indeed. My reaction is merely, "huh." And yet, if the Badgers were to bring in a transfer player with Reuvers' profile I'd be super excited.

I’m sure there will be a lot of transfers you wouldn’t normally expect. The fact they can just transfer and play right away takes any downside to transferring away...at least that’s how I understand the rule for next year, no sitting for a year.

Good teams have mediocre players transfer.

 

While I think Reuvers is much better than mediocre, all of his fellow seniors are leaving so I would probably leave too.
