If you’re looking for a reason to be optimistic after last night’s one hit performance, the current Brewers hitters have a combined .332 BA / .366 OBP / .520 SLG (.887 OPS) career line against Michael Pineda over 80 total plate appearances.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

Easter game from 1987...

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

The site I use had Brewers team O/U at 3.5 so I went over. Seems low in general let alone vs a starter they’ve had some success against. Let’s go Sunday lineup!!!!

I remain convinced Houser would be better suited to have a left-handed opener in front of him to start games.

Both Wong and Hiura had exit velocities >90-mph on good looking swings, unfortunately they both needed to barrel it just a little better for hits.

Our offense feels a little hopeless again. 1 earned run in 19 innings.
I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Ok I know I’m supposed to ignore 2020. So when am I allowed to start getting nervous about 2021 Yelich?

(Yes I know the answer is “not yet, and nowhere close to yet.” But 5Ks in 9 ABs...can’t help but bring up bad memories)

Big 2020 Yelich vibes.

He looks exactly like 2020. 5 K’s in 9 AB’s.

I did a quick scan of his game logs and counted 9 times total in 2018 and 2019 that Yelich had 3 Ks in a game. Last year he had 9 in the short season, and he has one already this year.

I was never going to be surprised if 2018 and 2019 end up being the best 2 years of Yelich’s career. But if his norm ends up being closer to 2020 than 2018-19, this franchise is in trouble.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I’m more worried about Hiura personally. He might be a negative WAR 1B.

What success have the Brewers had against Pineda? According to Baseball Reference the Brewers have only faced him once and scored 3 runs against him in 6 innings in a no decision.

The Brewers best, and almost only, offense in this series has been the Twins fielding.

Yes I know the answer is “not yet, and nowhere close to yet.”

This time of year I have an admittedly goofy way to look at the start of the season. I think of the baseball season in terms of a football season (i.e. 10 baseball games = 1 football game). Basically right now we haven’t even quite reached the end of the 1st quarter of the first game if it’s football season. I start to get a little more worried about things once we get through “one football game”.

I’m equally concerned about both.

Use the link at the top of the page (opening post) that says Batter versus Pitching stats for Pineda and you can review each current Brewers player’s career stats versus Pineda. They didn’t all play for the Brewers during their previous outings against Pineda (i.e. Bradley Jr, Shaw, etc.).

Arcia not having much luck but he’s hitting.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I’m glad you admit that it’s a goofy way to look at it.

I don’t think anybody is worried about a 1-1 or 1-2 record. But when your two most valuable hitters are coming off dismal seasons, and then pick up right where they left off striking out in half of their ABs, you have to wonder if this season is going to be more of the same.

I was trying to figure out if I was missing something, that looked like one of the more obvious outs you'll see. Do teams maybe not have video crews to review things anymore, like due to covid or something?

Easter game from 1987...

That was a memorable day capping off a memorable weekend. Our second daughter was born on Friday and we brought her home on Sunday. The weather was so nice that when we got home I grilled brats.
