Brewers under Stearns really like going HS players in rounds 11-20 and when in went to 40 and offering a couple 100 thousand more then the 125k allowed and try to sign as many as possible....i personally love that approach and feel like we have some exciting guys to keep eyes on over the years from that range....(C. Robinson, Quinten Low, Caden Vire, Jace Avina, Max Lazar, Jevon Ward, Pablo Garabitos, Karlos Morales, Justin Bullock and since traded Korry Howell and Reese Olsen)

Brewers have seemed to like college players but there 2018 draft was very HS heavy and we always seem to take a couple JUCO kids....exctied to see what we do starting in under 24 hours here!!!

Reading through the FanGraphs scouting reports of guys in our range & with full admission that I know absolutely nothing, some of my personal favorites &/or guys that sound like they kind of have Brewer-y profiles to me are #23 Tyler Locklear (1B), #29 Connor Hjerpe (P), #31 Parker Messick (P), #36 John Kasevich (3B), #41 Malcolm Moore (C/1B), #45 Dylan Beavers (RF), #48 Cade Doughty (3B), #66 Tanner Schobel (SS), #84 Ivan Melendez (1B), #87 Jake Madden (P), #95 Hayden Dunhurst (C), #98 Carter Young (SS), #106 Tyler Cleveland (P), #107 Spencer Giesting (P), #111 Jackson Cox (P), #117 Alan Roden (1B), #124 Andrew Taylor (P) and #125 Jurrangelo Cijntje (P).

Regarding the first round, I’m hoping for one of the college pitchers.  It’s hard to tell who might be available but going off MLB’s list there seems to be depth with college pitchers squarely where we are.

The Alabama pitcher coming off injury, Connor Prielipp, might be my first choice.  He’s from Wisconsin originally.  High upside and reward could be tremendous.  Also like Hughes, Tidwell, and Horton, in that order.  I assume Rocker will be gone but if he’s there I would be interested.  If all of those guys are gone, Hjerpe is interesting and his homer avoidance is super interesting.  Ferris is an interesting high school pitcher but I would avoid prep guys this high unless they absolutely look overwhelmingly better than the college options  because prep arms are a crapshoot.  I’m fine with high school pitchers in the mid rounds but not this high unless it’s an unusual circumstance.

(High school hitters are less risky IMO a la Turang who is developing nicely and was a  steal where we got him.  Just don’t compromise on hit tool.   If you don’t have a hit tool as an amateur I just don’t like the profile and that seems obvious yet we have screwed that up in the more distant past like the Corey Rays of the world.  Come on, if you can’t show a good hit tool as an amateur, against that level of competition, how on earth can you expect a good hitter as you go up the ladder?  It’s a longshot to say the least.  Turang was a high schooler and he looks good because he has a hit tool.)

There are a couple of college outfielders who look ok in our range but none really seem to add much to where we already have great depth.  Infielders in our range seem relatively weak. There is a catcher I like, Logan Tanner, but he’s rated lower (MLB has him at 41).  Too bad our supp pick is after the second round this alternate year.

I think the draft matches us at pitcher and that’s where I hope we go.

Jones upside is tantalizing, but seems like the Brewers have kind of shied away from the boom/bust guys in the first round since Ray. Hiura was always at least supposed to hit even if he never figured out defense and then Turang, Small, Mitchell and Frelick have been more high floor with a chance to pop if something clicks kind of guys.

I’ve been going off the MLB write ups (just because I’ve followed their lists) and there is divergence from Frangraphs.  For example, MLB has Locklear much lower (I think around 100).   Will be interesting to see how it shakes out.  I suspect Fangraphs will be closer to reality.

Some interesting guys in there that MLB.com has different ranks on.  Regarding Locklear, I didn't give him much of a look because of being a RHH 1B, but given that he has an above-average arm I'm wondering if he could stick in a corner OF spot?  Likely LF, but he has a 45 run grade (not terrible) and he swiped 14 bases over the last two seasons so if there's a chance he can be an average defensive RF I would not mind if he was pick #72 and certainly would be OK at #102.

Tyler Cleveland and Spencer Giesting would be interesting 5th-6th round picks.

#192 - Zach Morgan, C, Fresno State; Steven Zobac, RHP, Cal; Orion Kerkering, RHP, South Florida

I knew the name sounded familiar.  Kerkering shot through the Phillies farm system this year and pitched in game one of the NLDS against the Braves.
