Packers 2022 Discussion Thread

probably just posturing at this point in effort to land a big extension, but Deebo Samuel has apparently let 49ers brass know he wants to be traded...similar contract situation to Metcalf in that he's entering the last year of his rookie deal (2nd round pick).  Took a look at their current cap situation, and boy they really need Jimmy G's contract off their books so they can get things done with their own guys who need new deals (Deebo, Bosa, etc) - frankly they need to make some moves in order to free up space to sign their own draft picks later this year.  Between Jimmy G and Mayfield, there are two teams who hope to contend in 2022 that likely need to trade their 2021 starting QB away for little more than cap relief.

Due to his versatility I'd actually prefer Deebo over Metcalf in a Packer uniform on a sensible longterm contract.

I'd peg the chances of the Niners trading Samuel to the Packers at about 0.5%

Given the history between these teams from about this time last year, the least MLF can do is call up the 49ers and ask what it would take to acquire Deebo assuming he wants out...if only for due diligence purposes.  I'm sure Shanahan would understand!

The FA market value of WR was set crazy high this off season.  I don’t think a “sensible” long term contract is an option.   With what WR are getting, it makes no sense to trade for a 1 year rental you can’t resign.

To me a sensible longterm deal for Deebo would still be a huge payday for him - it would just need to include enough years on the back end to spread the signing bonus out for cap purposes.

Packers have the room to add a marquee WR on a huge new deal, moreso than the 49ers and a few other contenders do at the moment - unlikely he gets traded here because the 49ers wouldn't want to face Samuel in this offense come playoff time, though.

The NFL said Thursday it will release its 2022 schedule in pieces, leading up to a full reveal at 7 p.m. Central time on May 12. The Packers will also learn the date of their London game May 4.

Kardarius Toney is on the block and could be a realistic option that wouldn't cost much financially. Probably could be had for a 2nd or 3rd?

that would be a very interesting buy low option.

Give me a little DeSean Jackson.  The man can play and even though he is old, he can also teach the young bucks. He runs great patterns and still has the knack to stretch the field. He would relatively cost next to nothing

Packers reportedly talking about Darren Waller.

https://sportsnaut.com/green-bay-packers-darren-waller-trade/

Both this outlet and acme packing say that "CheeseheadTV's Aaron Nagler" said...  I can't find anything on CheeseheadTV about this.  Was it an offhand comment in one of the podcasts and in the desperation for clicks and phony news this comes out? Derek Carr already tweeted it's not going to happen.  From all accounts he was part of the initial Adams trade (adams for 1st round pick + Waller), but the league office refused to allow it because a player can't be traded for a tagged player (the Raiders then swapped out Waller for their 2nd round pick).  Adams didn't sign with the Packers first, he was traded to the Raiders who signed him so a player can't be part of that transaction to the Packers.  Now that the Raiders have Adams why would they get rid of a Waller?

Edit: Is there another team that values draft picks less than the Raiders (other than a Ryan Pace managed team)?

Pretty sure the Rams' GM had t-shirts made that lets everyone know they could care less about picks, too....saw a bunch of them worn by fans during the parade after they won the Super Bowl.

Carr can say there's no way a Waller trade will happen - but Waller has no guaranteed money left on his current contract and Carr has openly talked about making sure Renfroe gets paid next.  The Raiders have other TE's on their roster that may have supplanted Waller based on his uneven 2021 due to injuries and COVID list absences, too.

With less than $6M in current cap room and with other players on their roster in need of new deals along with signing their draft pics, trading Waller and instantly freeing up almost $7M in cap space due to no dead money left on his contract actually makes a ton of sense for them.  It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Waller dealt to someone this thursday or friday in exchange for a 2nd or a couple mid-round picks.

The Raiders aren't trading Waller and as a win now team it would make zero sense for them to. He's a beast, and injuries last season didn't change that. 7M is chump change for a player of Waller's caliber. He isn't going anywhere.

Sorry, but any logic that suggests the Raiders trading Waller makes a lot of sense for them falls into the "wishful thinking" category in my honest opinion.

I'm taking the Waller stuff to be something blown out of proportion as well. I have no doubts that the Packers inquired on Waller as part of the Adams trade or separately since as they likely did/should do on any receiver that may hypothetically be available. But in this day of social media, something as simple as 'the Packers called to do due diligence and nothing more happened' quickly escalates into click-baity 'Packers trying to acquire....'.

Doesn't mean the Packers won't pull off some type of deal this week, just that I don't think there's even smoke here, let alone fire.

The Packers are always in talks or showing interest but that's where is stops. It never goes any further than that.

The Packers are notorious for keeping player interest close to the vest. Once it gets to the point where that info has become public knowledge, that ship has often already sailed. Most of the big moves the last decade have come seemingly out of the blue ... for instance that random photo of Julius Peppers walking around Lambeau that popped up on Twitter several years back. No one had any idea that was happening until the deal was signed.

Wait... random incorrect trade rumors coming out just before the draft? That never happens!?

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

FWIW

I would love to know what they've offered so far, assuming it's true.

Packers picked up the 5th year options for both Gary and Savage today.

Alexander (and Amos) extensions maybe soon?

Edit: That means EDGE and S tonight!

Sounds like Walker made some head-turning plays in coverage on the first day of rookie camp. Considering how terrible our underneath coverage has been the past several years, I can’t even imagine how much we’d love having a guy who can cover a darn TE or RB well.

Our inside linebackers went from a huge weakness to a strength pretty quickly.
