Mon. 7/4: Holiday Delays the Rest Day until Tuesday

The Shuckers led, briefly, 3-2 and then they did their Shuckers thing. This time, Victor Castaneda managed to give 3-runs back before he was pulled. It's now 5-3 Biscuits headed to the sixth. The struggle is real.

19 yo RHP Kevin Briceno is quickly turning in to a prospect to really keep tabs on. After today’s 6 2/3 innings of one hit, two walk, 6 K ball he’s now pitched 25 innings of 27:3 k:bb. That’s zesty!

Wow. Awesome to see another strong outing (& some Twitter footage) from Kevin.

I feel like there are around 13-14 prospects in the system who are more or less consensus Top 20 guys & then there are another 15+ who are legit contenders for those last 6-7 spots.

I put Briceno 20th on my July ballot because I wanted to give him a tiny internet nod that insane K/BB ratio (even if it was over a tiny DSL sample of IP), but if he keeps dealing as the summer goes on…that’s the kind of excitement that hooks us all on this stuff in the first place.

I noticed this and, as per usual, you were ahead of the curve my man. You're a stud. You also had Carlos F. Rodriguez up there pretty much before anyone else. I commend your watchful eye! And, I love it when you put forth some of those deeper number crunches that get many of us looking in a given direction.

In other news, my guy (LOL) Jakson Reetz just hit another Johnson (!!). His 20th. Jeebus he's on a literal scorching tear. AND, just after that, Abraham Almonte ripped his 10th jack (a two-run blast) to stretch the Sounds lead to 5-1. Great stuff!

Promote this STUD, please:

My goodness, that ball is absolutely crushed. What's more? He's playing left field tonight. Have I mentioned: stud? Incredible athlete, folks. He's got the tools. We're lucky to have him.

free Jakson Reetz

Not to be lost in our glorious and worthy love fest for Mr. Jakson, Thomas Dillard managed his 6th home run blast earlier and just ripped his 18th double. He's coming on, gents. He really is.

Speaking of heating up, Ashton McGee just hit his third HR in, what, four games? A two-run jack knocking Zavier Warren across the dish in the process. It's now 3-0 T-Rats in South Bend. Joe Gray Jr. also blasted his tenth HR (a solo shot). However, Justin Jarvis faces men on the corners and nobody down here in the bottom-half of the fourth. Fear not, I say! Jarvis just struck out consecutive batters and there are two down now. Whew.

We have some games going on tonight, folks!

Justin Jarvis is an up-and-coming stud. Through 4 ip he now has a mere 4 hits and 8 k's (no walks). He brings his best stuff against the Divisional leaders. THIS is what you want from a potential Ace. He has a frame to grow into and put on some more weight (I would propose). Getting out of a no-out, men on the corners jam, when your team just took the lead is exactly what you want to see from your potential Ace. Great stuff!

Interesting developments for Lucas Erceg since his promotion to Nashville:

He's really working in a change-up and slider. They both look really good. This progression is extremely exciting. If he can keep this up and keep improving his Mix and fine-tune the location, we suddenly have a MLB pitcher. The quick progression, however, is quite something given he was really scuffling in Biloxi. I just watched him strike out David Fry (after the ump missed a second check swing strike 3 on the day) with a dead low center 84 mph breaking ball. He then followed that up with an 87 mph strike two dipping change-up followed by a 99 mph heater to k the dangerous Bobby Bradley to send the game into the ninth inning. Very sexy stuff.

A walk-off in extras versus the Wrigleyville Hipsters and now the T-Rats have opened up an 8-0 lead on the road in South Bend? Be still my heart! ?

I see no reason to promote Reetz. AA isn't that much below AAA in quality of opponents (the top end might even be better), and there's no one at AAA catching that ought to be demoted.

Let him have success and come into spring training with a chance to impress.

Jakson Reetz will be a minor league free agent in October. Unless added to the Brewers' 40-man roster prior to then, he'll be in huge demand and able to pretty much name which organization's big-league roster he wishes to join.

but being in AAA instead of AA doesn't change that.

It does if the Brewers are on the fence about whether to add him to the 40-man at year's end. If they have already made a decision on him, I concur.

Not really.  I doubt the Brewers see much Reetz would have to improve and playing at AAA is not going to change that.  The talent level between AA and AAA is miniscule at best and sometimes the talent in AA is far better than what is in AAA.  AAA is normally the holding spot for someone who needs to work on something in their game.  Turang it is hitting for power for Feliciano it is staying healthy and defense and for Small it is to fine tune his control.  Majority of the time prospects only stay in AAA until they are past the super 2 date.  All other players in AAA are AAAA players or players that the team use as reserve players on the roster.

Reetz being in AAA doesn't really tell the Brewers much about him any more than what they would know with him at AA.  With what he has shown so far this year I am confident he will either be traded or added to the 40-man.  It wouldn't surprise me to see Reetz added into a trade package during the deadline.

Really disagree with this. It only works if you just look at the top prospects. If you're a hitter, there might not be much difference when you are facing a AA or AAA team's No. 1 starter or closer, but when you're facing the No. 3? Likely a pretty big difference. And the No. 5? Likely really big. Same with the bullpen. There are a lot of struggling middle relievers in AA. You know what most AAA middle relievers have in common? They were good enough in AA to get promoted.

You should look at the rosters of some AAA teams. The pitching staffs are full of older AAAA dudes who don't have the stuff to make it in the majors. They might have better command than the average AA pitcher, but they don't have better stuff.

I don’t disagree with the roster makeup of AAA. I am saying that there are a lot of guys on the AA rosters who aren’t going to be good enough to ever become AAAA guys.
