Marquette Basketball 2022-23

Don't care about the seed so long as they aren't in the same region as Purdue.  Don't really have an answer for Edey, although most teams don't.  Everyone else they have a legitimate chance to beat, but Purdue will be by far the toughest matchup.  Gonzaga will be a tough matchup too.

I could see Purdue being the #1 and Marquette being the #2 in the Midwest which would suck.  Alabama as the #1 and Marquette as the #2 in the East would be better.  The committee likes to put Marquette in the East.

The East as the #3 is probably the most likely outcome but the South is also possible as the #3.

Congratulations to all you Marquette fans.  I personally find it easy to root for Shaka Smart and this group of players even though I am a Badger fan.  I will be rooting for a deep run by this team in the NCAA Tourney.

Badger fan here too.  I personally dont get the rivalry people have with the other school.  When Marquette doesnt play the Badgers I cheer for them.  Hoping they make a nice deep run!

As expected Marquette will play St Johns tomorrow, which will be basically a road game. I am sure Marquette's record will encourage more to make the trip to MSG for the tournament though. The good news is no matter what I can't see MU falling less than a 3 seed.

LOL at the Badgers getting their clock cleaned by tOSU. Maybe now the fans will quit lying to themselves about getting into the dance like they have the past three weeks. If they're lucky, and I mean really lucky, they'll get a play in game.

I'm sorry, but this is so little-brother.  Nobody has been claiming that they're going to get in for sure.

Marquette hasn't won a game in the tournament in a decade.  If a "clock cleaning" is a game that was within four points in the last minute of the game, then what was Marquette's 95-63 loss to UNC in the tournament last year (the same school that UW beat 85-62 the year before in the first round of the tournament)?

I agree, I don't post trash talk on the badger thread for that same reason.

Marquette finally has a good year for the first time in two decades and now their fans think they are going to be a perennial Top 10 team in the country. Lol

As an outsider I always find this rivalry odd and resorts to Marquette fans desperately clinging to their one sport they have. I guess it isn’t surprising they act like it is Christmas morning when they might end the year ranked. Hasn’t happened in a decade. Fans may hang a banner if they make the Sweet 16.

And this is so entitled big brother.

Anyway, I didn't see the game and didn't start following on gamecast until 3 minutes left in the second half so was it that St. Johns brought their A game today or was it us playing dumb basketball with the inexplicable fouling in crunch time with a lead?

Wisconsin alums tend to cheer for both Marquette and Wisconsin but that is generally not the case with Marquette alums.

I kinda get it (I'm a Wisconsin alum who cheers for both)...but it's pretty dangerous to be trash talking right now. I'll be ready to hear it from my brother (Marquette alum who doesn't cheer for Wisconsin) if Marquette makes it to the second weekend.

Mostly a Badger fan too, but always liked Marquette.

I said when the Golden Eagles got Shaka that it was a great hire. It's just a good fit. Shaka was awesome at VCU and then had to basically play the game of appeasing recruits and focusing on minutes and keeping people happy (by getting them attention) rather than just winning. At Marquette, he can run his style, get a higher-caliber player than in the A-10, and still not deal with the egos of the five-star, top-of-the-top guys. He can get total buy-in. And he's flexible enough to find transfer and build that way if he has to, as has happened this year.

Honestly, that was Villanova's blueprint. Good players (NBA role-player potential, but a lot of just great, great college players a la Arcidiacono), high basketball IQ, a really smart coach, and total buy-in.

Not saying Marquette is the next Nova or that they're national title bound, but I cannot remember the program being in a better spot in my lifetime as it relates to sustained success (Dwayne Wade=anomaly). I don't think Shaka would work at Wisconsin for a hundred reasons, but I'd trade places with Marquette if I could.

Tomorrow’s games should be entertaining. UCONN is a tough matchup for Marquette though. The other semi looks like it will be Xavier / Creighton

From my experience there are plenty of UW fans that I Know of that don’t cheer for Marquette. I think there are portion of each that will cheer for both schools and some that don’t. I think if you like in UW-guy living in MIlwaukee, you are more likely to do so. It’s not lost on me that the 7 years of Wojo were dark days as a Marquette fan, while UW had consistent success. I”m going to enjoy this run, but don’t see the point of rubbing in the first year they have been good since Buzz’s Elite 8 run.

Man. I love Big East basketball. What a game, what an atmosphere. Shaka was pumped at the horn there, rightly so.

Congrats, Marquette fans. Conference tournaments can be weird, but there is nothing quite like 'em, especially in a league so hoops-centered.

No matter what happens tomorrow, this game should seal a #2 seed for the tournament. All the "experts" have been looking for an excuse to bump them down to a 3. Still getting no respect for the Big East champs.

An excuse? Plenty of good teams that have been just impressive or have just as good of resumes.

Texas is an easy pick over them. Purdue/UCLA is an easy pick over them. Then you have Arizona, who is about to make their final in easy fashion…and there is also Gonzaga, who already won their conference tourney. If Arizona wins and Marquette loses…I’m not sure they get a #2…if both win/lose, who knows.

Baylor/Kansas St both bowing out of the tourney helped out…but the water is still murky on what seed line Marquette will end up on.

If Arizona beats UCLA and Marquette loses, I don’t see a reason they shouldn’t get pushed down to a #3 seed.

Marquette beat Baylor by 26 points in November. Hard to justify Baylor being seeded  ahead of Marquette.

Well, I was not inferring that. Had Baylor gone on to make the Big 12 final and/or win they likely would have been a #2 seed. Same is probably true for Kansas State. They both lost though.

A single H2H match-up win in November would be almost entirely meaningless on a resume. Whether by 2 points or 26 points.

Baylor was a great win for Marquette. Baylor has 3+ of those kind of wins though and it doesn’t require going to the year 2022 to find. Had Baylor or Kansas St made the final or won the Big 12 tourney they would have added another 2+ wins better than anything Marquette has.

They didn’t though and it probably means Marquette controls their own fate at a #2 seed. I doubt there is much reason for Gonzaga to be over this if they win and I doubt they can really reason Baylor when they couldn’t even manage a semi final appearance.

Lunardi latest 9am yesterday literally put Marq as a 3seed in South. Purdue who beat them the 2 seed. Mississippi St a 11 seed who beat them. Vs a 6seed without a quality win Conference winner. Nuts. I think winning today with the last 10/20 game record gets them a 2seed.

I've always thought seedings in regions always looked ahead to future marquee matchups.  Marq vs Kentucky as one. Purdue vs Marq and Baylor vs Marq. Put Marq as a 2 seed. Baylor as the 3. Purdue would be a 2 seed in another region(where Uconn is a 3seed) that potential sweet sixteen. And final 4 matchup. Let's go ahead and put Kentucky in their down year as the 6 seed for that matchup in sweet 16 if Baylor doesn't beat them. 7? Seed for 2nd rd matchup? Whatever region Marq gets put in you can predict it will be loaded so 2 other regions can have the committee's top 3 teams they want in final 4 and 1 in Championship game.
