Game Thread (8/23/2022): Brewers (Burnes) at Dodgers (Gonsolin) - 9:10 PM CDT

It's nice seeing the bottom of the order hit sometimes because those guys tend not to try hitting every ball 500 feet. I've been frustrated lately watching mccutchen, renfroe, tellez, hiura taking nothing but home run cuts...except the two times renfroe bunted. Hopefully yelich can keep the train going

I just watched Urias throw a ball away, Adames completely wiff on a grounded and the catcher missed a called strike 3. Gonna go ahead and just say that's bad defense.

I never said it wasn't, where I disagree is your comment like it's this constant thing...the brewers playing bad defense and making errors. It's far from that, and the numbers back me up

They certainly do to me, and defensive metrics back them up. Yes, urias should have gotten an error on that one bad play he made. Im sure that will factor in to the team defense on the season and we'll remain a very above average defensive team...

That really surprises me. They look like a very average defensive team to me. Not good....not bad.

If you don't think the Brewers have been playing poor fundamental baseball the last few weeks we've been watching different teams.  I don't even think I said anything about errors so I guess we're reading different boards too?

Alright get one tomorrow and get the series. We keep winning series and we are in.

Keep winning series? We've won 1 out of our last 6 series. We didn't go from comfortably in 1st place to 5+ back by winning series'.

Giving the Dodgers 5 + outs in an inning isn't working out. What a shock.

Brewers continue to fail at fundamental parts of the game such as defense.

This is your comment, the numbers and eye test indicate they are far from "failing" at defense. Perhaps you are referring to other fundamental parts as well such as.....?

Gonna go ahead and just put you on the ignore list.

For those wondering how the Brewers could be so good on defense and yet so bad. Of the 23 defensive runs saved by the Brewers this year, 10 are from Jace Peterson and 2 are from Cain. A couple of guys who haven't played a lot lately, thus their recent run of poor fundamental defense despite what some padded stats suggest.

Oh no, you really hit me where it hurts!

If you're looking for a bunch of halfwits to smile and nod along with every one of your bad anti-brewer takes...perhaps bleacher nation or Northsidebaseball are a better fit for you...

Burnes obviously can't go out there & walk people like Gallo & Bellinger. No, the offense didn't come through, but that's just not something you see "staff ace" type guys doing. Just a poor day for Corbin.

I thought Gonsolin was real impressive in the first two innings. It can't be easy throwing off a mound with a horseshoe sticking out of your pants.

Absolutely disgraceful to use a position player to pitch in a 6 run game.  I really dont like how this team has been managed this year.

And it turns out both teams used a non-pitcher. It's becoming a little less of a novelty unfortunately. I get it because we're in the era of pitch counts & multi-million dollar investments in guys' arms. But it makes for some ugly baseball.

Yeah because after the Brewers used 1 they scored 3 runs and went up by 9.

I was listening to the Dodgers' radio broadcast on Sirius on the way home tonight and they said Burns has a high ERA against LA.

He does now.  ?

This isn't rocket science. Our chances have always been to rely on our starting pitching (6 or more IP, 2 or less runs, have the back of the bullpen closing it out). When we do that, we usually win, regardless of the competition. When we don't, we usually lose.

If we have faith in our pitching, we have every reason to remain positive. We just need to get back to the days when Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, and Lauer were all pitching like aces.

There is nothing else that would make me leave a game early, but if they put a position player on the mound I refuse to watch that garbage.  At what point will we just see a team pull everyone off the field, load up the bats, and head home in the 7th because they're losing and the millionaires can't be bothered to expend anymore energy?

Nah, he has always been bad against lefties, probably closer to 0% than 100% that they were ever counting on him to hammer lefties.

That is true. However, it defies conventional baseball wisdom. That's the point. A right-handed hitter with the kind of bat speed Hiura generates "should" be able to hammer lefties. It's a big reason why the guy is an enigma.

yeah, just keep fighting the fact that Hiura crushes RHP.

Some here are no better than Counsell.

A right-handed batter that absolutely sucks against lefties is an enigma. Plain and simple.

I think this is asking a lot.  Most teams don't have 3, let alone 4 pitchers who can consistently shut down opposing teams' offenses.  Not having consistent hitting is our Achilles' heel and it was unforgivable IMO that this wasn't addressed at the trading deadline.

Yesterday I saw maybe half a dozen other brewer fans here.  Today 0.  But thats ok, us against the world, lets win a series!

Well, it IS a west coast night game.  <shakes head>

When I see a list of the available hitters at the deadline and what each one would've cost us in prospects, then I'll criticize the team for not making a deal IF I feel said cost was worth it. Until that happens complaining about "not picking up a bat" is barking at the moon.

Robo is right. This team is built on success via run prevention & has been for a while now. They need to get back to that. Of course, you can't win consistently by beating everyone 1-0, but we can't afford outings like Burnes had yesterday. Now's the time with the SP getting closer to full health. Peralta needs to get better the further he's removed from injury. Houser needs to be a lot closer to what he was last year.

With last year's Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta,  Lauer and Houser, that's exactly what we have. If they don't perform, we don't have a chance to go far. Period.
