Joe Musgrove with some suspicious looking stuff on his ear tonight and his spin rates are comfortably up across the board. Very interesting.

Musgrove el perfecto through four. Padres up 2-0.

The sticky, icky on his ear is doing a great job.

Playoffs are where having a good hitting lineup pays off..

Mariners scored 690 runs and had a 107 wRC+ this year.

Guardians scored 698 runs and had a 99 wRC+ this year.

Padres scored 705 runs and had a 102 wRC+ this year.

Brewers scored 725 runs and had a 103 wRC+ this year.

Best hitting teams in the Wild Card round, STL (772 R | 114 wRC+), NYM (762 R | 116 wRC+), TOR (775 R | 117 wRC+) are about to go 0-3.

Seems to me more just SSS flukiness than a good hitting lineup especially considering the Padres best hitters this series Grisham, Nola, Profar respectively had 83, 89, and 110 wRC+ this year. Grisham and Nola would have been two of the worst hitters on our roster.

Reminded of '82 tonight. In the final game of the season w/the two teams tied for first the Brewers got out to an early lead on Baltimore & Don Sutton was dealing. Earl Weaver has the umps come out & check him. Supposedly some balls looked worked on (scuffed). Wouldn't put it past Weaver to plant the balls himself, although Sutton did have a rep of doctoring from time to time.

I loved Suttons' reflection afterward. "The ump came up to me & said they found some scuffed balls & had to throw them out. I told him 'that's good, cuz they sure are hard to throw straight'".

Yeah. The Padres also had a worse lineup statistically than the Brewers this season, too.

Stats aside I would take a lineup with Soto, Machado, and Bell over the Brewers 101 times out of 100.

Soto & Machado sure, but Bell hit 192/316/271 (79 wRC+) for SD.

If Stearns traded prospects for that kind of production his coat of tar & feathers would be another layer thicker.

NOT NYY ever, please.   I'm also not fond of ATL and HOU. But at least with HOU there's Dusty to cheer for. My #2 was Toronto, but I can pull for Padres and Seattle and Cleveland. Dodgers were my default faves before (and for awhile after) I loved the Montreal Expos, may they be resurrected.

Keep this thread running. It's a long time without baseball between the end of the regular season and opening day 2023. And the typical posts on here are at least enjoyable and thoughtful. (And yes, I include Treego's dismal rhyming. ) ??

Oof...what's the line about stats?

"Lies damn lies and statistics."

That Pads lineup without Tatis is much better than ours. That lineup with Tatis?

These are some really awesome matchups for the divisional series. I’m hoping a few of the underdogs can exorcise their demons.

The extra off day on Wednesday in the ALDS is quite the favor to throw to the wild card teams and with the sweeps over the weekend the pitching matchups tomorrow are not as lopsided as they could have been. Baseball players like their routines and the 1-2 seeds have been sitting around all weekend. We’ll see what happens…

I have a feeling we’ll see the road teams steal some games this week and I expect 2-3 of these series to go 5 games.

Called that on twitter.  Easy to see coming, elite hitter against a guy with garbage command.  How Servais couldn't see that coming is baffling.

Well, that's a backbreaking loss for the Mariners. I wonder what tipped Valdez off that it would be a fastball.

That barely saved my Fox Bet.Super 6 pick.   lol

Questions are a burden.   And answers a prison for one's self.

I have no idea why Servais didn’t go with Erik Swanson there. Tried to get too cute and overmanaged the situation.

Since coming up in 2019, Yordan Alvarez ranks 3rd in wRC+ (164) and 23rd in WAR (14,0).

The main things holding back his WAR are being primarily a DH (-31.5 positional adjustment) and only ranking  129th in PAs on account of coming up partway through 2019 & various injuries since then.

Will prolly end up 3rd or 4th in AL MVP this year.

Crazy to think of him in the middle of this Dodgers lineup if they hadn’t traded him to HOU for Josh Fields.
