Three-way trade with A's, Braves; Brewers get William Contreras

To clarify, I’m not worried about him being heartbroken at the trade, I’m more covered that there haven’t been any interviews or any other comments/tweets from his end regarding joining the Brewers. You have thought there would have been someone that interviewed him about it but I haven’t seen anything.

I remember when we acquired Adames. Of course there was some footage of him being teary-eyed at being traded, but within a day or two he was doing interviews and was all on board with joining the Brewers. I was hoping we’d see something similar.

He is from Venezuela. Probably hiding in a bunker somewhere.

What kind of a “team friendly” deal would it take to sign Contreras long term, and should the team even consider this not knowing how well he can or will catch defensively?
6 years for 40 million?

I would wait into this season before offering an extension given that he has 5 more years of control remaining. We need to see how he adapts after his "rookie" (I know, not technically) season and to his new surroundings. But if he goes ahead and immediately starts reproducing last year's numbers, then lock him up ASAP. I get we have Quero in the pipeline, but there's the DH and God knows we're desperate for hitters, particularly ones who crush LHP...

I would try and buy out 2 years of Free Agency. It would take him into his early 30s, that said he also might not go for it for that very reason. Some guys are more open to locking up Free Agent years than others

We saw he was heartbroken by the trade. Has he been introduced by the team yet? Spoken after the trade? This guy we assume is showing up in the spring, right? Just so we do not have a Sheffield on our hands.

I don't think so. What you almost certainly saw was a guy being naturally emotional after being traded from the only organization he has ever known and one he won a WS with. I'm sure he's back home in Venezuela enjoying the offseason, which is why we have yet to hear from him. No reason to be worried about a Sheffield situation right now.

Shouldn't even be a thought of doing this year. As a Catcher his career high games played in a season (minors+Mlb) is 112.

Part of his success may be not enduring and extra 25-30 games a season like elite catchers do and sustaining their batting. Maybe he can? Or maybe he'll tank?  He'll give the team hopefully an indication what games 125 up to 140 means at the plate. The moment his bat dips his excess value he was providing as a bat first C drops. He's not a 900-1000+ OPS bat that history is on. Should he move off defensively at Catcher the bat value for DH is average or lower. Now you are handcuffed with a 5-6year commitment for average or lower at DH.

Can't put nearly any thought towards extending catchers if defense isn't their bright calling card.  Adding offense to it becomes extreme valuable as they will not be moved from Catcher. We just witnessed with Narvaez what a dropoff from hitting Catcher with below average defense does when the hitting aspect doesn't do its part. He's 25 with 5more years control. He 3 good years of him and ship him off hopefully at his peak(like Narvaez) and let other teams deal with him when 30s come around.

6 yrs/75 million is the going rate for a player with two more years experience so probably somewhere nearer there than 40 million.

Probably would be a bad bet to lock up a player until they actually see him play regularly for awhile.

See how he fares at American Family Field in 2023, then make an offer in the 2023-2024 off-season.

And the price goes up with another really good season… if we can get him at 6 for 40 now, it would be tempting to do it.

What's your breakdown for a 6 year $40 M extension because that seems high for that type of deal.

23-1 mill   24-3 mill   25-5 mill  26- 7 mill   27-10 mil   28-14 mil     (Ages 25-29).., seems high; almost would be better to go thru arby.
Then again…

Realmuto signed a 5 year 115mil deal for ages 30-34

Murphy 6 yr  73 mill for ages 7th year club option for 15 mill (ages 28-33)

That's awfully high for arb numbers to get little discount on 1 extra year of control. Murphy signed his with 3 years before FA while Realmuto's was signed in FA. Both players are better than Contreras.

Next offseason probably a good time to talk… maybe 6 for 35 to 40 mil would be a better deal then.

Good. Still could be a Sheffield, but chances are even lower now… from .01% to .0001%

Just posted on twitter with him in Brewers gear saying 'Lets go!' or something similar to that.

The Adames trade was in season, so obviously he would be asked shortly after reporting his thoughts about joining the brewers. Contreras was not, so there is no need for him to speak until pitchers and catchers report, which I assume he will be positive about the trade in a few weeks once he is in Arizona.

FWIW, Contreras just changed his profile picture on Instagram to him in Brewers gear. So if there was any worry about him pulling a Sheffield…

I’m glad. I’m surprised it took 8 weeks or so for the first communication to come out. You think the team would have interviewed him or something and put it on social media, considering he’s our big acquisition this off-season.

The person that did this for him could have at least managed the new logo, lol

Brewers so cheap they couldn't even hook the man up with a current hat....had to dig one out of the clearance bin in the back of the team store. 😅

Ball & Glove Logo is the best logo out there.  Hands down.  They gave him the best of the best.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

It’s the old and original ball and glove ( and yes, bat) logo that he is wearing. It is not current. The team does not play games anymore with that logo.

Do we know the Brewers sent him the old hat? Couldn't it just be that he bought it, or maybe got it as a gift? Maybe he likes the original ball and glove logo? Not sure what the fuss is about, I think it's cool he got geared up and shared a post with it.
