I know what the narrative is going to be on the Lions after winning this game tonight, but I'm not buying it. The Chiefs were awful.

Toney is so bad.

That throw was solidly behind him, no?

What is definitely bad, Andy Reid. I get trying to decide your fate…but 4th and 25? Come on man, that’s just idiotic.

If we're talking about the same play, looked right in his hands to me.

As far as the 4th and 25, didn't really see a difference. Either way they needed a 3 and out on defense after, and didn't get it. Skyy Moore should have converted it, honestly.

Like their coach the Lions are a tough physical bunch.

Largly the reason they swept pack last year.

The Packers like their coach last year were Charmin soft.

That narrative started long before the KC game. They're a team that's built on a foundation of an elite young OL, elite weapons at RB/WRer as well as a strong defense.

KC clearly played poorly. Drops from last years SB hero Toney, Sky Moore, Kelce and Jones missing. But it's still a Patrick Mahomes team on the road.

Detroit still went into arguably the most difficult place in the NFL to win right now and they found a way to get it done. That's just another stepping stone for this young Detroit team.

They play smart, they play hard and they just added a nice rookie class with 4-5 guys who look like immediate contributors in Gibbs, Campbell, Martin, Branch and LaPorta. Jameson Williams coming back to this team week 7?  They've stacked several really nice draft classes together now.

The Lions are definitely a physical team. Sewell falling to them kinda marked a change in how that team was building. Taking an OT at 7 when you've already got an elite LT was smart. But that's not why the Lions beat them. The Packers dominated the ball and time of possession, they just repeatedly failed to convert on short yardage, generally via the passing game. The INT to Hutchinson, 5 turnovers in the 2 games including a rare 3INT game by Rodgers.

They Lions also just simply had nothing to lose in those games. The final dagger in the Packers playoff hopes, a quick toss and then a lateral to Swift was the perfect example of that.

The 2nd game was more of the same, the passing game just not coming through, specifically on 3rd/4th down. The Packers have become a more physical team under LaFleur and Gutekunst.

That's been the priority of this team. Gary, Jenkins, Van Ness, Wyatt, Slaton, Walker, Tom, Watson, Kraft, Musgraves.

I don't know exactly what they'll look like and I don't care about preseason scores, but they play with an edge. From Heath and the WRers run blocking, to Van Ness relentlessly attacking, Enagbare making the few starters and backups he saw look foolish, a very physical backfield with Dillon, Wilson and while Jones is short, he's one of the hardest runners in the league.

The only thing I think was soft about this team was the coach of the defense. Barry was certainly soft until MLF repeatedly had to publicly talk about playing more aggressive.

Don't get me wrong, Detroit *could* win the division. Just don't think it looks any more or less likely after tonight.

Fair enough.

It reminds me a bit of that Bengals-Packers game when the Packers came out after back to back NFCCG appearances and in the midst of a 3rd straight 13 win season. It was just a sloppy, ugly game, but it felt like a turning point for Cincy. They went on to beat the Lions the next week, then just destroy the Ravens.

It's entirely possible I'm making way too much out of it and it's confirmation bias. Hell, I hope it is.

Statistically a team has a better chance of winning their division when they start 1-0 compared to 0-1.... 😉

Nah, not the pick six...that one was pretty cringe. It was the last drop in this video. His attempt to catch it seemed pretty lackluster, but the throw sure seemed pretty off as is.

If we are being perfectly honest, even the second throw left a lot to be desired. Way too low and Toney had no idea how off that throw was because the other WR ran in front of him.

Thought this was an interesting idea.

Interesting, but a couple points:

1) No need to step out of bounds on a change of possession.

2) If you go down 10 you're pretty equally screwed so I don't know if that's really any better than allowing a 1st.

Here would have been my idea: run all the way back and take a safety. You're down 23-20 and now you can try an onside kick from the 20. If you get it, you can tie with a FG or win with a TD! If not, you're in no worse of a position -- Lions would have the ball on the edge of FG range and you still have a chance to beat them if they get stopped on 4th or kick a FG.

Regarding going down 10:

  • At 21-20, a TD and 2pt conversion would put them down 9. Is that what you were referring to?
  • Otherwise, the options would be:
    • 21-20: no score
    • 24-20: Field goal
    • 28-20: TD+xtra pt
    • 27-20 for TD + failed 2pt/xtra pt kick.
  • Or how did you mean they could be down 10?

Regarding a safety+onside kick:

  • I wonder what is more likely? Converting 4th&25 or an onsite kick?  I think I'd take my chances with 4th&25.  They almost made it the way it was...

I think you have Patrick Mahomes you probably go for it on 4th and 25. But maybe without Kelce you don't? either way it's kind of a fun thought exercise.

You're right, I'm totally dumb.  I don't know why I was thinking they could go down 10.

That tweet is spot on. Going down back at your own 9 (10) almost guarantees your worst case scenario is getting the ball back down 8 with a chance to tie with a TD and a 2 with still almost 2 minutes left.

What a bizarre, but correct strategy. So unconventional I can't even blame Reid for not having thought of it in the moment.

It is actually brilliant, but he'd have gotten crushed if he'd have done this. "4th and 25 with Patrick Mahomes and you don't even try!"

That'd be the talking point(unless it worked, then he'd be a genius).

I supposed Reid has enough good will built up.

Sunday Ticket on YouTube first impressions (30 minutes in):

1.  Scott Hanson talks way too much.   All the stuff he talked about during the first five minutes (talking over the kickoffs, for instance) could have been done if they came on 8 minutes before kickoffs (like DIRECTV always did, allowing Siciliano to do all that pregame talk before the games actually start.). And his voice cracks like a 12-year old any time something is exciting.  Siciliano was much better at this, especially the talking too much.

2.  The audio is off.   Hanson sounds way too tinny.   The crowd sounds like I am hearing it through a cardboard wrapping paper tube.  This needs to be improved.  It hurts my ears.  NEVER had this problem with Directv’s red one, which had a good mix of treble AND bass.

3.  The switches from game to game are much more quick on this version of red zone.  This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it’s so quick they if you’re not paying attention, you might have missed that they changed.  This is where Hanson DOES need to talk, telling me there’s a switch.

I'm sure things will improve but so far call me less than impressed.   I can’t wait for them to have other issues.  (I’m not even going to the whole “25-76 seconds behind real time” thing) or the local games forcing you to change inputs on your tv to switch back and forth between out-of-market games and the local one.
