Rumor: Corbin Burnes Asked Matt Arnold If He's Going to Be Traded - "He's not trading me", Reports Burnes

Posted

It's a question every Brewers fan has asked themselves over the past year: Will Corbin Burnes be traded? Should Corbin Burnes be traded?

It's a question Burnes has been asking himself, reports MLB.com. And a few days ago when he saw General Manager Matt Arnold, he asked that very question.

"He's not trading me", Burnes told Adam McCalvy. And Arnold is focused on adding pieces, not subtracting, as the front office did last year with the controversial Josh Hader trade.

It makes sense, given that the Brewers are in first place in the National League Central and if they want to make an October push, it's hard to see that happening without Corbin Burnes fronting their rotation.

Maybe it’s just me but I find it a little strange that Burnes asked Arnold that question and that Arnold gave him a definitive answer. I mean, what if some team offered up some ridiculous package of players for Burnes or what if the Brewers went on an awful losing streak to close out July? Arnold should have just given Burnes the same answer he would have given the media had they asked the question. Just a weird situation.

I think closing the door on a Burnes trade is stupid. No we shouldn't just give him away but if the Dodgers or any other team makes a great offer for a pitcher that is 100% gone after the 24 season we should accept the offer and help set this franchise up for the future. This team should never let a great player walk for just the draft pick compensation alone so trading Burnes at this deadline should be very much a real consideration as his value drops the closer he is to free agency.

Maybe if last year didn't happen.

Trading Hader wasn't the problem the issue was with what we got back and luckily Arnold cleaned up Stearns mess by turning Ruiz into Contreras. We definitely shouldn't sell Burnes for a discount but we should be willing to listen and see if any team blows us away with a great package for a guy that is gone for sure after next season.

Trading a one inning reliever is also very different from trading your ace pitcher.

I just don't see it happening at this point.

People management is as important as asset management. And after last year's Hader controversy and the Brewers fading until they missed the postseason entirely, there's a lot to be said for focusing on the people management aspect when asked a question directly.

Your best pitcher and probably best player asked if he was going to be traded in the middle of a tough stretch against your main competition. Answering that player's question directly and succinctly is probably the smart move.

Yeah I understand the people management aspect to it but isn’t it just opening up a can of worms for Arnold? Should every Brewer be able to go ask Arnold if they’ll be traded and he has to give them a definitive answer? That really puts Arnold in an awkward situation if for some reason he ends up getting some outlandish trade offer for someone he already told wasn’t getting traded. I’m a huge Burnes fan but I don’t think he should have done that to Arnold and I don’t think Arnold should have answered him the way he did. Just my opinion.

Good move with Burnes, though… we might get his A stuff now.

Quick reality check... this isn't "MLB:  The Show"  Nobody is going to offer more than 2 tier 1 players for him.

This board, among others, have been clamoring for the "Cy Young" Burnes.  Well, he has been pitching like that during his last handful of starts.  So, let's trade him while he's hot?  I'm excited about the season again -- especially with Yelich being all-star worthy.

Build the foundation of solid starting pitching.  Burnes is the cornerstone.  Let's get another solid bat and another bullpen arm.  Get into the playoffs and do some damage.

Considering the sellers market and what the guardians for civale, I wonder what Burnes would get.

We could get a haul for him and we damn well should.

I’m not convinced the Brewers won’t simply run it back next year with Woodruff, Burnes and Peralta, make them QOs and take the pick. Sell more tickets that way.

The Brewers control Peralta through 2026 with the team friendly extension he signed in 2020

Yes I know by them, I meant Woodruff and Burnes. I could’ve worded that differently

I think its entirely possible and it scares the crap out of me. The Brewers made that mistake with Prince Fielder and IMHO it might have set the franchise back 2-3 years.
