Really early start today. The Brewers have a solid chance of taking the series in Philly. By taking one of the first two games with very uneven pitching matchups, the Crew now has Burnes on the mound.

In July, Burnes is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA.

For any of you bettors out there, the over/under on Burnes' strikeouts today is 6.5, which seems awfully low for how well he's pitched lately, especially his last start.

Great article on here by Jake McKibbin going into detail his improvements lately.

Thanks my friend! Always nice to know they're going down well

No Winker today against RHP

With how Contreras has been hitting and the general absence of consistent hitting beyond him and Yelich right now, I get the move to keep him in today's lineup with Caratini catching Burnes.  I don't like it for longterm wear and tear with Contreras as the season wears on, but I have to live with the team I root for opting to carry a primary DH who frequently sits despite facing what should be platoon-friendly RHP so they can keep a right handed hitting catcher in the lineup when Burnes pitches.

Now, as to the question why Winker is still on the roster at all, does not compute.

Plus 1 on this.

I will admit. I was cynical about the articles feature when we migrated over from brewerfan.net. I am happy that I was wrong about that one.

What's the price tag for letting him go?

I think if the Rockies pick him up, we get Nolan Arenado.

We owe him about 3.4M for the rest of the season. (roughly 41% of 8.25M)

Probably seeing Luis Urias as the team's new primary DH...which frankly I'd be ok with despite knowing there are other better internal options not currently on the 40 man.

If on Opening Day this season we knew that the Brewers would have this lineup for a game in mid-July and we had to guess what their record would be at this stage of the season, I think we'd all be off by about 15-20 wins.

I would also be guessing that would be the last start for Burnes as a Brewer.

Not to mention all of the injuries including Mitchell, Woodruff and Ashby for a huge chunk of the season.

Ouch. That's a lot of Kohl's cash.

it's a sunk cost - only way it's worse is if they actually don't release him and we have to suffer through two more months of Winker actually being put in the lineup in 50% of their games and otherwise wasting a roster spot.

Winker has undeniably been below replacement level without optimism for improvement.

On the other hand, our ‘replacement players’ are performing above replacement level. 🙂

Conclusion: Winker should be replaced.
