Numbers don't jump off the screen and hasn't pitched in the MLB in two years. Must see something they really like to give an MLB contract.

Tommy John surgery in May 2022. He was hoping to pitch for the Giants in the 2nd half of the 2023 season, but only ended up making 7 starts (14 innings) for their AAA team. He's a solid back-end starter, though, if fully recovered.

I hope this is a split contract not an MLB contract. Feels like it could be a Jose Urena type deal if it is a normal MLB contract.

Yeah, I wouldn't automatically insert him in the rotation or anything. He could be moved to the bullpen or released before OD.

They obviously like what they saw from him in the minors this year.

What is Arnold cooking? We currently have a pretty set 13 pitchers if Ross's deal is an MLB deal.

SP - Burnes, Peralta, Miley, Houser, Rea

Swingman - Ross

BP - Wilson, Megill, Peguero, Milner, Uribe, Payamps, Williams

Of those 13, Megill, Peguero, Milner and Williams are the only 4 who can be optioned. Milner and Williams are too good to be optioned so it leaves you with 2 pitchers with options of the 13. Feels like there has to be some trades lined up going forward. Especially when you consider where do Gasser and Ashby fit in this.

Sinker was 3mph harder in 2023 than it ever was in the past. Probably part of what they like. I'll always trust this team to be able to spot overlooked pitchers they can fix. It won't be a 100% success rate of course, but it's certainly good enough to believe they know what they're doing.

A Burnes trade seems pretty obvious to me. Or maybe Williams.

Yeah seems like a Burnes trade is inevitable, but honestly think a RP trade might be coming as well. Maybe that's Williams maybe someone else.

Uribe can also be optioned, although that seems unlikely

Looks to me like a pretty solid pitching staff....and "pretty set" 13 arms in early December is a good spot to be in right now...by Spring Training at least two of them are going to have some sort of injury issues to deal with - that's just what happens with pitchers.

No reason to make any grand tea leaves predictions for a Burnes or Williams trade based on adding a veteran lefty who's familiar with the club and a potential back of the rotation starter returning from injury.  those are the type of moves the Brewers make every offseason to solidify depth with their staff.

I have to give Arnold the benefit of the doubt this time around, after wondering how we’d make it all fit together last year (Guerra, Varland, Payamps and Wilson all could not be optioned).

Nice. Velocity up tick in short iP starts could be exposure what he may present as a RP /swingman. Checked off the list.   2 TJs Ross/age and future RP role may be what he's destined to turn a career around.

Only 14 IP in the minors last year coming off of Tommy John.

That's fine. I'm sure the contract will reflect that and he had pretty good stuff. Looks like it'll be a depth signing.

Spent the last two years rehabbing, made it back and now should be healthy. And if he's not, it's not like this will be crippling.

After last year, it'd be surprising if, barring injuries, Ashby fit anywhere other than Nashville to start the year.  I love what he could be, but he hasn't shown he's back to that level yet.

I do mostly agree with this

I think both IF (IF) Arnold gets what he wants return-wise. Should be a fascinating rest of the offseason.
