Three Odd Obersvations On the 'Fringes':

1) The ACL Crew has really struggled with cresting the mountaintop that is improving from 5-or-6 games under 0.500. They have routinely fallen back to 7 or more games under 0.500 as a habitual practice. They are currently 6 games under...again. Can they keep grinding to get closer to that 0.500 mark?

2) I spoke to in Wednesday morning's report, but INF/OF Jheremy Vargas has been having a really nice bounce back season overall. However, his kyrptonite is the 0.220 BA. It seems in 2024 every time he gets into the 0.220's or higher with a run of solid production at the dish, he hits an '0-for'. Back on June 8th, he had finally climbed the mountain and got that BA back to 0.224. He had to work over a month to Tuesday's contest (2-for-4, 1 HR) to get back to 0.221. What happened next? 0-for-4, 1 K. Back to 0.216. Sigh. Can he re-settle and change the benchmark? I believe he can. A 0.236 season-long BABIP isn't going to help all that much, however. Can we get just a little bit of help oh mighty baseball Gods?!

3) I have absolutely not been kidding when reporting (on more than one occasion) of RHP Daniel Corniel's strange third inning woes. In his rougher outings, Corniel has really struggled in the third frame. On the season, get this, Corniel has allowed one or more runs in the 3rd frame in 8-of-14 Starts. This includes a 6-run inning vs Delmarva on May 29th; a 3-run inning by Charleston on June 5th; and a 5-run Down East outburst back on July 2nd. I don't know what it is about the odd-numbered innings and Corniel but it's a thing - especially in the third frame (and, secondarily, the first frame). Unlike young RHP Manuel Rodriguez, Corniel hasn't been able to find that sweet spot of consistency in his debut season. He's had flashes of excellence, to be sure, but he lacks Rodriguez's otherworldly consistency and control.

Ortuno and Lafond with their first HRs.

Ortuno - he is smaller -so either we see a growth spurt or he size/power may limit his future profile, like many Brewers prospects.

Ortuno with his first home run. Almost out-OPSing both Made and Pena.

What are they feeding them at that new academy?

All three young men are legitimate DSL studs. What's fascinating with Ortuno is despite having essentially 30 fewer official AB, he has only played in 3 and 2 games fewers, respectively, than Made and Pena. What's also fascinating about all three players is they have insanely good K:BB ratios and Ortuno has the best out of all three - generally speaking - at 18 BB-to-12 K. The DSL Uno are just having an incredible season. The difference between the two ball clubs (Uno y Dos) is the pitching, when you really parse it out. For example, both squads have scored in the mid 150's in Runs. Both squads are hitting a similar team BA - 0.260 DSL Crew #1 / 0.253 DSL Crew #2. Similar OPS - 0.782 Crew #1 / 0.777 Crew #2. The Dos have actually hit 21 more doubles whereas the Uno have hit 9 more triples. You get the point. Hence, why in a game like today the Crew Uno get a hitless 4 IP w 1 BB and 7 K from second year hurler Joshua Quezada. You have two more nice days from Anderson, Lafond, and Quintana (who has come on this past week). They also score five runs. But, their pitching staff gives up seven.

I digress. Yes. Ortuno is a stud.😅

Didn't realize until just now that Joshua Quezada is who we got from the Yankees for Clayton Andrews.

Hopefully he can offset that Jake Bauers trade somewhat with both Jace Avina (123 wRC+ in A+ with K rate trimmed to 25.5%) and Brian Sanchez (146 wRC+ in the FCL) having nice years in the NY system.

Not pertaining to this directly, but I think you and I both know of the players traded over the past year, Avina, Sanchez, and Severino have done very very well for themselves. Severino's vastly improved K:BB numbers in 2024 has me all sorts of excited for him and a bit 😩 for the loss of such a pool of intriguing prospects.

The Low-A Mudcats are down 2-1 in their series at Fredericksburg and now turn to 18-year old RHP Josh Knoth (3.69 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 10.2 K/9 in 53.2 IP) to turn the tide. DH/C Blayberg Diaz sees his first game action in 10 days and SS Cooper Pratt is away at the MLB Futures Game (tomorrow).

The AA Shuckers are aiming for a 3-1 series lead at Chattanooga and are in the excellent hands of 22-year old RHP Jacob Misiorowski (2.21 ERA with 28 Ks over last 20.1 IP). 3B Brock Wilken has an .871 OPS over his last 140 PAs.

The Sounds can clinch a series win over the miserable Cubs tonight, though it would help if 22-year old RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez could get back to his pre-MLB debut form as he’s conceded 10 runs in 9 innings since his return to AAA. Uber-versatile Tyler Black starts in center field. 2B Owen Miller is 7-for-10 with 4 RBIs this week.

The High-A Timber Rattlers can also clinch a home series win over West Michigan tonight. 23-year old RHP Will Rudy (5.37 ERA) has been trending better of late (3.63 ERA with 21 Ks in last 22.1 IP).  Wisconsin has 5 of the top 16 basestealers in the 12-team Midwest League.

I like to talk about 15/10/.1 guys (less than 15% strikeout rate, better than 10% walk rate, better than .1 ISO). The Brewers have had three guys who hit all three metrics in their first DSL season (Chourio, Arcia and, umm, Jorge Quiterio). Three are on pace to do it this year: Made, Ortuno and Juan Martinez.

Juan Martinez?!? Do we just get a new academy stud daily now or what?

Carlos Rodriguez (the OF) singled, Darrien Miller walked, then both came around to score on a Connor Scott double in the top of the first.

Top of third Brock Wilken and Darrien Miller have each singled with a Connor Scott walk loading the bases one down.

And an Ernesto Martinez Jr. triple clears the bases as Zavier Warren steps to the plate now with the score 5 to 0 Shuckers.

Misio has gone six up six down two strikeouts so far.

Tyler Black singled, stole second, and scored on a Francisco Mejia base knock to get the Sounds on the board bottom of one.

But Carlos Rodriguez (the pitcher) gave up a pair of solo jacks top of two as Nashville now trails 2 to 1 top of three.

And Peña only misses out because his walk rate is less 10%, Jose Anderson due to his K rate 18%. So all said and done there could be 3-5 of these players. The big 4 (made, Peña, Anderson, Ortuno) rank 3,5,6,17 in wRC+, and 2, 4, 11, 12 in OPS for the DSL.

Misio finally gave up a hit bottom of four - a two out double - but also added his fifth and sixth strikeouts of the evening.

Meanwhile, Brock Wilken has doubled to lead off the fifth.

Bad news - Misiorowski lost the no hitter, but seriously he has 4 IP, 6K 0BB, and on,y 45 pitches to get thru 4.
It is 6-0 Shuckers.

While the TRats have got the offense going Lara with his 2nd HR this season (let’s go Luis!) and the Luke Adams decides to swing the bat and hits a 2 run HR (oh yeah Areinamo got on with a single surprise). So 3-0 now

CFRod wiggles out of a base loaded jam, with it remaining a 2-1 deficit.

Luke Adams was jammed on that HR and he still carried the tall wall in LF. He's a seriously strong human being.

Followed by a Darrien Miller walk, and a Lamar Sparks RBI single, and an EMJ walk to load the bases, and a Casey Martin grand slam to unload ‘em.

Now 11 to 0 Biloxi.
