I can agree with that for the most part.  The question is whether that improved the team versus what they have and/or what they gave up to get him.

Montas is effectively replacing Keuchel's spot in the rotation. I feel pretty safe saying that's an upgrade at this point.

For Montas I’d say 5 IP | 2 ER or even a good old fashioned “quality start” of 6 IP | 3 ER  is about the best we can hope for so that would qualify as good.

5 IP | 3 ER is about his median so I’d say that’s fine.

Any fewer innings or more runs than that gets into bad territory.

Also, CHOURIO!!

I mean he could have done nothing differently and it would have been 5 IP 5 ER if Payamps gives up a sac bunt and a single. I think a little more context than the "Soup pitched great" line of 5/3 is needed here.

I guess but the same arguments were being made for Keuchel, but Keuchel wasn't on the team when they traded for Montas.  I'm not a huge stat guy but ti would seem Byrce Wilson could give you similar or better production without the cost.

That Keuchel was supposed to be some kind of improvement? I don't quite recall that argument being made.

I mostly remember people crossing their fingers regarding a guy who was seemingly washed and who we purchased for $1.

Every win is a big win now…….way to go fellas!

ps Will somebody tell this stupid Apple announcer that Junk being claimed did not mean the Brewers were playing a pitcher short in the pen!

I mean what part of dfa is that hard to understand?

That's why I added "given the cost"

Re. Montas. I saw some stuff to be encouraged by tonight. Particularly regarding his velo and the 0 walks.

I also saw some hard contact given up and pitches left out over the plate.

Conclusion: Too early to say anything definitive. As I said, I feel pretty confident that he can be an improvement over Keuchel. How much of any improvement that is we'll see. I think there's stuff for our pitching development staff to work with.

Yeah. Quite frankly, the cost was pretty negligible. Junis is a negative, expiring asset and Wiemer has very low value at this point.

To be back to +6.5 feels good, given that it could easily be 4.5. It's two days, but that feels like a big difference.

Its huge.  They have a pretty decent gauntlet through the middle of this month.  Every games worth of a lead is a good thing.

I've already beaten this to death in the Montas thread, but no one decided that Junis was a (negative??) asset and Wiemer had very little value until after the fact. No one was saying this a week ago.

Montas was not good tonight. I get that people want badly to try to believe in the acquisition but I cannot believe that anyone thought he pitched "fine" tonight.

Man, we had very different takeaways from tonight’s performance. I’ll take a season-high 95-99 MPH with a strikeout per inning and no walks every time. If that’s what he does every start for the rest of the year, he will be the acquisition of the deadline. I was very encouraged by what I saw.

I can't believe our deadline acquisition gave up 3 runs in 5 innings and people love it. I don't care what his velocity was. Everyone throws upper 90s these days.

I don't care about avoiding walks when you're allowing nearly 2 hits an inning.

I'm stunned that anyone would refer to a 5 IP 3 ER start as something they want to see every time and refer to that as "the acquisition of the deadline".

I feel like I'm living in the Twilight Zone.

I can't believe the lengths people are going to to force themselves to love this trade.

Ummmm I have been saying Wiemer has no value for awhile now.
