I don't ever recall so many teams within striking distance of the best record n baseball with 1/4 of the season remaining

There are currently nine teams within four games of one another at the top (& that doesn't include potential playoff teams Houston, Kansas City, & Atlanta)

The Yankees currently lead baseball with a 73-50 record ... Arizona & San Diego are four games back at 69-54

Milwaukee is in the middle of that group of nine teams at 70-52 ... on track for 92/93 wins

I found this to be fascinating

Is this more common than I realize?

Good observation.

Currently on pace for the first season since 2014 where there is no 100 Win team.

There was a pretty decent article on the topic at Yahoo the other day that looked at some possible reasons why like injuries, new balanced schedule, and team building philosophies.

Like other leagues, I think we are seeing more load management in baseball. Why kill yourselves to win 105 games? Just get to the playoffs.

There has been a fair amount of criticism of Murphy and his decisions, but I think that Murphy realizes that it's very different to manage through a 162 game season - especially with 11 players on the IL - than to manage a 5-7 game series in the playoffs.

There is no need to win every game.  Give up one today to win two later and ensure that as many players are healthy in October as possible.

As of right now, the top 6 teams in baseball are within 1 game of each other. That is kind of nuts for this late in the season.

Just heard on MLB Network the Diamondbacks are the hottest team in baseball 17-5 the last 22 games and only 3 games behind the Dodgers now.
