Could potentially clear $200 million imo. At least getting Dansby Swanson money.

I really think it will come down to if teams think the defensive falloff this year is an aberration or a sign of things to come. That could hugely impact the quality of offers he gets.

One thing that should work in his favor is that he's clear and away the best SS on the market. Swanson had to compete with Turner, Correa, and Bogaerts.

Weird to say, but I hope Adames hits a slump soon, so he has enough time to find another groove in the playoffs.  Otherwise this stretch will be a afterthought when he's not contributing offensively in October.

When he's rolling at the plate for about 2-3 weeks 3 or 4 times a season, it's easy to forget the weeks of bad at bats that also come with Wily.  He has a had a great bounce back season after 2023, that's for sure!

Love him as a player and wish him well in free agency this offseason...hope he gets plenty of money from a team not named the Brewers.

Willy is awesome and my favorite player on the team. However, he has really struggled defensively this year and that has hurt his value to us a lot.

Adames: 2.8 WAR

Frelick: 2.0 WAR

Frelick "seems" to really struggle this year but the value isn't incredibly different from this metric.

With that said, Willy will get a big contract and I will be happy for him. (and our QO)

OAA is a little kinder to him. Not at the same level as the previous couple years, but brings him up to 4.3 fWAR, tied for highest on the team with William.

I wouldnt go over 5/125 if I was a big money team. Swanson, Baez, Story have all feel on there face and Willy has some warning signs (defense and bat last year). His bat this year and past defense likely makes him a 9 figure man but I dout he gets what Swanson got.

Dansby Swanson has 8.0 fWAR through nearly 2 seasons as a Cub. He's performing up to his contract so far.

Swanson at FA (age 28): 101 HRs, 255/.321/.417, 94 wRC+, 59.1 DEF, 15.9 fWAR

Adames to date (age 29): 146 HRs, 249/.323/.445, 110 wRC+, 43.2 DEF, 20.8 fWAR

Willy is also by far the best SS on the FA market this year, whereas Swanson had to compete with Correa, Turner, Bogaerts, and even Baez.

All signs point to him getting at least what Swanson got.

Sure, but .236/.307/.380 isn't a good year for a guy making 25 million or so even if he plays good defense.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Wondering which teams that have mountains of cash to spend and who would be interested in throwing Wily a 9-figure contract in free agency this winter to a SS who probably will need to be moved off that position soon?  Thinking that list might be pretty short, and would actually limit Wily's prospects for a contract coming anywhere close to $200M - Even if the "market rate" should put him in that area.

The Padres already have like 3 or 4 other veteran SS's making a ton of money they could easily move back to that position even if they opt not to resign Kim...cross them off that list.

The Dodgers do make sense...if they feel like keeping Betts in the OF and don't want to get nuts with adding even more starting pitching via free agency this offseason to a payroll that is already ridiculous.

Giants, too - and I think that's Wily's most likely destination.  I also think it's the team most likely to overpay given how the last few free agent offseasons have unfolded for them, too.

The Braves have already shown a willingness to let homegrown veteran position players walk when their contracts get to a point where you're paying for past performance - see Swanson, Dansby.  I think they'd be interested - just not at the length and overall CV Wily would jump at.

The Padres are losing Kim and Machado and Bogaerts are much less viable at SS at this point than Willy (they're playing neither at SS right now with Kim on the IL). Maybe they move Merrill back there, but that would just be creating a new hole in CF.

I think they'd be interested at least.

Did this off the top of my head so I might be missing a team or prospect.

Teams you can cross off the list (have a stud they are committed to or a stud to be):

KC

BAL

NYM

CIN

TEX

WAS

NYY

PHI

PIT

Teams you can probably cross off the list (have a decent starter(s) or young guy that they like):

BOS (Mayer in the pipeline))

HOU

CHC

STL

LAA

PIT

MIN

ATL (might roll w Alvarez)

CLE (if they want to stick w Rocchio)

AZ (Lawler)

Who is left w money to sign a FA of Willy's caliber:

LAD

TOR

SDP

SEA (Emerson is in A+)

SF

Others:

COL

They would have to move Bichette's salary, wouldn't they?  Bichette has been a huge disappointment this year.

It only takes 2 teams being seriously interested for him to get paid.

yeah, but I have doubts there will be 2 teams that get into a bidding war over him at the level he'll think he deserves.  I think it's going to be more along the lines of a handful of tepid suitors if the price/contract length makes sense to them, and then one team who really want Adames that winds up competing against what the previous "market rate" SS contracts were from a few offseasons ago that have largely proven to be bad longterm investments.

Good for him and glad he's hit so well this year to help us out.    Seems like a good guy so glad he's going to get paid.   But I'll be happy to not be the team paying him 25-30 mil per year once he's not in a contract year along with aging and he starts hitting more in the 220/300/430 type area of the past and his D falls off.   That said, with his body type and arm a move to 3B should be very easy for him and still provide value there moreso than OF/DH/1B types.

And while being happy to not be on the hook for this contract, I also see how replacing his production next year at whatever position isn't exactly going to be easy.  I suppose, in theory Yeli should cover a chunk of it.  But the new infielder next year I really hope is a hitter rather than Turang D first type person.

I don't know if you can put a value on his clubhouse presence.  I hear from so many players how he keeps things light and also holds others accountable when needed.  A classy leader and a mental boost to others on the team.  Of course, winning helps that... 😉

So... get 'er done this year, Brewers!

NYY

I'd not be surprised if the Yankees go after him. They've been complaining(well, fans have) about how bad they are at the other IF spots, lack of production. Volpe is their SS, BUT, depending on what they have to do with Cole and Soto, maybe he just moves to 3B?

I also think he's still an elite defender who's had a bad season. His range and arm strength haven't declined, so, I think he's got a few years left there.

This is just about the best situation for the Brewers. Get the most out of him in a walk year with a good draft class and two young SS's who can take his spot and hopefully, we can find a 3B/2B stopgap.

LAD, SF, Seattle and NYY with one darkhorse. Hard to see the Braves spending that money or the Padres.
