The Padres seem pretty intent on cutting payroll in the form of Luis Arraez, Dylan Cease, or Michael King. I could see anyone of those players being of extreme interest to us if we can extend the payroll a bit. King makes 8 million, Arraez 14, Cease 13.75 I do think that it would be almost a guarentee that King and Cease would bring back comp. pick next year, Arreaz could potentially but unlikely. My guess is Cease would cost at least what we gave up for Burnes which is probably to much for my liking, King would probably be very slightly less because his history isn't as long but he every bit as good as Cease in my opinion and Arreaz probably wouldn't cost anything major but maybe a couple ancillary pieces. Arraez could platoon 1B,  some 2B (or everyday if you like Turang at SS/Ortiz 3B) and DH, King or Cease would give us a proven consistent top of the rotation arm.

Arraez for Payamps and low level prospect (ie Stiven Cruz)

King for Peguero, Henderson, Black or Boeve

Cease for Peguero, Civale/Cortes, Henderson/Boeve/Black, Juan Baez

I would be hesitant to give up a top 100 prospect either starter but acknowledge that in all likelihood Pratt, Misi, or Quero likely may need to be switched in for on of the starters.

I don’t think this is the year to buy a rental giving up prospects.   Dodgers are way better than us anyway yet we stand a good chance at making the playoffs.   Let’s just stay the course and maybe bring in a free agent or two that haven’t been signed yet.   But don’t trade prospects for a rental (not this year anyway).

I am so so so so thankful that guys on this page are not the Brewers GM.  lol

Way too much to give up for rentals, just crazy talk.

The Arraez deal, sure, do it, the other two, no freaking way.

The Brewers and Padres don’t really match up for a trade. Milwaukee doesn’t have a glaring need at SP (Peralta, Civale, Cortes, Myers, Hall, Woodruff, maybe Wade Mikey yet).

Next, with the Padres roster, they’re not looking to rebuild so they wouldn’t have much interest in anything but major league ready talent

Where does Arraez play 1st or DH?  I see him listed as playing some 3rd and 2nd.  But don’t think he was particularly good at 3rd.

Let’s say they move Arraez and a pitcher.  Civile back to them would make sense for cost on both sides for brewers and Padres.  Padres save 6 million and lets them deal King or Cease without hurting pitching depth.  Assuming it’s Arraez for Civile of course.

Turbo we agree!  Yes, definitely no to renting a starter for the prospect capital it will cost.   And yes I’d deal Payamps and something like O’day or Peguero and O’day for Arraez if they want a cheaper reliever to cut salary.   Let him play a little 2b and 1b and be a great pinch hitter option when not starting .

I was thinking about Cronenworth, flexibility for 1B/2B/3B (came up as a SS).   No idea how good his defense is - annual salary isn't overly terrible ($11m - $12m) - but dang that contract is long.    Don't want to commit that much over the next 6 years for a decent but not great player.

Yeppers, every into-the-salaries brewer fan understands your point.   Comes back to Cronenworth for Hoskins and which level prospect goes where .   Probably too tough to figure out which team should receive which prospects and not worth the time.

Luis Arraez turns 28 in a couple months, rarely strikes out, and has won three straight batting titles.  He's a freaking hitting machine like few other current players.  Sure, he's not a power hitter and he doesn't walk a lot, but sheesh, he hits!  Help me understand why he's supposedly not worth that much in trade value?

Because in addition to rarely walking or barely hitting for any power he is also a below average base runner (-5.0 BsR from 2022-24) and was so bad at 2B (-24 FRV) that he is pretty much 1B only now…and he hasn’t been too good there either with -6 FRV career in 1,152 innings.

Add it all up and last year his .314 batting average shook out to a 109 wRC+ and 1.1 WAR.

He should bounce back some, but posting career worst walk rate, isolated slugging and xwOBA numbers while falling to the bottom of the defensive spectrum is pretty concerning.

Getting hits is good. But when Arraez gets on, he is basically a base clogger, which isn't so good. His game isn't really a great fit for the Brewers' current offensive philosophy, which I see as tremendous speed on the basepaths, getting guys in scoring position, and manufacturing runs ... and, of course, hitting an occasional dinger.

That 14 million he’s owed makes that a tough fit for the crew.

If he could play some 3rd he’d be useful.  But he can’t .
