I don't pay much attention to the world of card collecting but it is wild to me that things that have so little tangible value (e.g, a piece of cardboard, a digital "coin") are somehow worth so much money.  Also, without knowing the details, these 1/1 cards seem like they're pushing the boundary of sports cards basically being gambling.  I suppose you could make the case that they always kind of have been  to some extent, but still...

Even if you call it a form of gambling, MLB loves gambling now, they can't get enough...

Look at all the sponsorships, billboards in the stadiums, etc.

MLB is all about gambling now.  Sorry Pete Rose.  RIP.

Value is just what someone will pay………the Mona Lisa is canvas and paint……estimated value of 800-900 million.

Easiest decision ever,  I'd take it to auction and put a 400k reserve on it.  If it hits that, after paying taxes and the auction house fee...probably walk away with about 175k which would be enough for me.  If it doesn't hit the reserve, right back to auction with a lower reserve.  No way would it be a long-term hold.  The guy blows out his shoulder in May and anything you could have gotten is right down the crapper.

Ok, and the seller will have to pay huge tax on the income.

For some uber rich card enthusiast I suppose it’s a cool buy, but the chances it’s worth anything significant in 20 years seems really remote. Lucky Kid to get the right card at the right time

Agreed. Crazy rich people are the only one's that have the $$ to buy cards of that caliber. Wouldn't surprise me if the players themselves are the winning bidders many times.

Haven't read the thread.

I would sell/auction the card in a heartbeat. Assuming I could get tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even a million for it, there is no gift package a team could give me that would keep me from cashing in.

I can happily subscribe to MLB.tv and use the remaining money to make a big difference in my life.

As the Pittsburgh resident of this forum, let me tell you, you are not selling your home plate seats 81 times a season, let alone the next 30 years
