Is Ortiz that bad at SS?

I don't understand why they wanted to move a platinum glove winner from the position where he won the award

Turang would have more opportunities to prevent runs at SS than 2B.

Last season, Turang was a shortstop playing 2nd base, and Ortiz was a shortstop playing 3rd base. They both debuted with expectations of being good to very good defensive shortstops. There probably isn't a significant difference in the quality of the defense if they are both playing astride the keystone.

One of the preferences people have is to have a set, baseline, defensive setup each game to create consistency, and fewer moving parts when platoons were in play.

Ortiz has the stronger arm so I would have thought he made more sense at shortstop regardless

Curious why you gave me the thumbs down...  Are you against Capra getting a chance?  Do you think Monesterio is going to be better?

I understand the argument for Capra, and I understand the relatively poor year last year for Mona. However, I still think that last year was his floor, and he generally puts together good at bats, and several timely hits. I think he we have not seen his full potential. I really don’t think either are superstars, I just believe Mona will have a better year.  I’m probably one of the few that would vote for Mona over Capra. I would even be ok with Capra and Mona making the team and Dunn and Durbin to getting more time in AAA.

I prefer Mona because Capra minor league stats were weak the last 2 years. But honestly I was hoping both would get replaced by a FA and I'm not too attached to either.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

I cannot remember another spring training where nearly every starting position player has an OPS above 1000 seemingly.

Milwaukee leads all of baseball with a .876 team OPS in spring training

.876 OPS this spring
.761 OPS last spring as a team
.782 in 2023

.741 in 2022

is there something different about the baseball this season? The 110 point bump in team OPS seems significant.

Henderson, Rodriguez, and Alexander not exactly seizing the opening day rotation spots these last two days. With it being reported Quintana won't be ready until second time through the rotation, the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation are going to be a bit ugly.

Count me worried about this pitching staff against a tough opening stretch.

Color me concerned as well, but not too worried. I think they were really hoping for Rodriguez to seize the spot, with Alexander as a backup option. One could also make an argument that Henderson was higher on the depth chart.  A couple things to consider: Even though it is late in Spring training, they may still be tinkering with some things and regaining feel. Also to note, this may move Thomas to the poll position. One could easily argue that Thomas pitching schedule more lines up with the opening for 5th Starter as we should see him Thursday or Friday. With Thomas still being an option, and still having plenty of Spring training left, I’m concerned but not worried.

With Quintana did they say if he would make a start in the minors or could he just start and pitch like 3 or 4 innings and turn it to the pen early.

With 6 games and 9 day Q could get 2 more starts. 2-3 innings/30-35 pitches Friday 21st (last pitched sunday) then 3-4 inn/45-50 pitches in a simulated game the 26th the day before the season. With the 2nd day of the season of Q could be ready for the 5th game even on a basic 60 pitch count.

Maybe the pitching is going down hill?

Any clue why Ortiz got pulled? Everyone was smiling too. Is he married and the baby was born or something?

He ran off the field like he crapped his pants or something. Cuz Murphy kind of smiled and Ortiz ran straight to the locker room.

The camera angle for the A's broadcast is absolutely brutal with some combination of the umpire, shortstop, and baserunner all blocking the strike zone at different times.
