With the Rangers struggling to keep their heads above water and the Brewers somehow overcoming the black hole on the left side of the infield and pitching injuries, does a play for Josh Jung made sense?  2 more years of control at what is not a crazy arb salary,  I can't watch Rengifo anymore.  I just can't.  At least Jung is a "known" commodity.  You never know what Jett or Pratt are going to do with a call up.  Lights may be too bright at first.  If the Brewers can weather the pitching injury storm, it sure would be nice to be loaded on both side when everyone comes back and they gear up for October.    If so, what would it take to get him?

He is under contract for two more seasons, might be more expensive than you think

According to Cot's, he's got 2 arby years left.  Only this years salary is posted.

Jung has 2.5 years left (this year and two arbitration years). He's putting up about a 3 win season. It would be costly.  The other issue of course is that the Rangers are only 2 games out and trading Jung also opens up future holes for the next two seasons.

I would love Jung but with the minor league IF depth getting close I would probably wait. Jung is hitting over .300 and with the control will cost a pretty penny. Now if we get to the deadline and Jett or Pratt arent ready than I can could be persuade to cough up the necessary price.

Unless a AAA prospect is hitting lights out, why do people expect they're going to come up, step in and produce immediately at the level needed to actually upgrade for a championship chase?

The counter point to that is the expectation that the player being acquired will continue to play well I think?

Last year Suarez was bad after being traded, McMahon was fine-ish... but has been an absolute anchor this year (in a bad way), Willi Castro was really bad for the Cubs after the trade, etc

So the acquired player better be a needle mover if we are giving up any real prospects of note - ESPECIALLY if there is a chance one of our guys can just come up and do the same thing from AAA.

Fair enough. I'd just suspect the odds of a guy who has already proven he can hit MLB pitching, continuing to do so after being traded are better than a rookie prospect providing a meaningful upgrade.  If Pratt was hitting .275, showing good power, I'd feel different of course. What if their "big" move is to call up Pratt and he falls flat after the deadline, like .180 flat? Lots of fans would be mighty upset. I never think they should go crazy on trading for somebody huge. Castro was a small upgrade that I thought could be a good move last year. Turns out it didn't work for CHI, but I doubt they gave up much either. Low risk / reward is still better than shooting the moon for a guy in my view. More often than not, you need a guy to complement a roster rather than carry it.

Joey Ortiz says "Hi!"

.193 .290 .244 .534

Rengifro says, "Don't forget about me!"

.204 .278 .253 .531

People aren't calling for Pratt because we expect him to come in and light the league on fire.. it's because the bar is already pretty low. Calling up Pratt today and sending Joey to AAA could be done today, could be done for "free" (no trades, no service time impacts, no DFAing a player), and really has very little downside.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Yes the bar is low. The downside is that people aren’t looking for a lateral move. If Pratt is called and flounders in that .193 - .204 range, that’s what it would be. Sure, he would be getting valuable experience for next year, but that wouldn’t help a stretch run. At present, fans are looking for upgrades not on the job training.

Correct.  If he flounders, we are no worse than where we are now.  If he succeeds, we improve for free.  We have 2 months until the trade deadline to find out if he can succeed.

I think fans can reasonably expect a lateral move for a rookie. at least then it makes some sense. The question is who has the most value to the team right now through the rest of the year and I would bet Pratt and the FO made the bet him for the future already.

That is the silver lining if they did bring him up I suppose. They could try him out for a month and have a month left to make a move if he wasn't providing an impactful upgrade. He would have to hit at least . 235-.240 with some pop in my book. And I doubt he has that ability just yet.
