Tonight's Game Cancelled Due To Rain (09/08)

Yep. This was the last scheduled game between the two teams and they do not have a shared off-day.

So both teams will only play 161 games this season (or less, if any other games are cancelled).

Oh, swell. Now it's that much harder to get to 70 wins (or whatever number you've been dreaming of). Time to crank up the grit, I guess.
Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

This is a travesty.

George Steinbrenner is demanding a forfeit for both teams, giving the Yankees 2 extra wins.

Last time the Brewers played only 161 games? '99.

Edit: And I'm pinning this. Game Thread, representin'.

If only the Pittsburgh paid $200 million more they could have kept a September game against the Brewers from being cancelled! Why didn't they make the investment?

actually, could probably have had a roof for $100 million more. If they wanted it fully sealed and everything then much more. Powell always rips on the Pirates, and I've got to agree.

So lets see....

At least $150 million for a moveable roof. Given that a stadium may have 20 year life now thats $7.5 million per year. For what? Maybe 10 games are now played that wouldn't have been before. So you really think they lose 750K per game versus a day-night doubleheadder? The only way a moveable roof makes sense is if you can sucker some one else, you know taxpayers, to pick it up.

I think the idea is that many games are still played in bad weather, but it keeps the fans away. It wasn't even worth gouing to Brewer games early in the season in County, but in Miller Park you don't even have to worry about it. How many times pree Miller Park did you not even consider going to a game because the weather MIGHT be bad?

You're forgetting maintenance costs Endaround.

I don't fault the Pirates for not having a roof. They'll have the tickets exchanged and won't lose much for attendance. And it's a different market. A roof is important for Milwaukee given the competition in the area. There aren't two teams 90 miles from Pittsburgh. And the lack of a quality product for years. St. Louis doesn't need a dome to draw big crowds. Nor do the Cubs. Or Boston. Or the New York teams. Or Baltimore. Or San Francisco. Given the cost of a retractable dome, if you are in a position to avoid it, you're undoubtedly better off.

The Pirates could have had a Montreal style "roof" for about 20 mill. Maybe less. And the upkeep costs can't be bad if Montreal can afford it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif

I avoided maintenance costs and depreciation to keep things simple. And I disagree about the Brewers needing a roof. Say the Brewers draw 2 million brining in about $40 million in stadium revenue. Now a third of that or so needs to go into revenue sharing. Lets go with 25 percent to keep it easy. What this means, is that to recoup just the cost for the roof, the Brewers need to add $10 million in total revenue. So the roof has to account for 25% of all stadium revenue. I'm sorry, but there is no way that is the case. If stadiums had to be funded as a business, movable roofs just wouldn't happen because they are a waste of money.

remember, the Pirates have something like 25 hours of rain delays each season. That's a lot of lost revenue, a huge injury risk for players, etc

The good news about the rain out is that the Brewers missed Oliver Perez, who's busy mowing down the red hot Astros as I type this. It's a blessing in disguise.
