Later in the interview, Prince pointed out that his father used to dangle his ML accomplishments over him as a way to keep him humble / motivated. He wants to hit 52+ HR so that his father can never ask him whether he hit 51 HR in the majors again for the rest of his life.

 

Likewise, his father never finished higher than second in the MVP balloting; Prince may well surpass both those accomplishments at age 23.

I like that he uses this as motivation to prove people wrong, that he's good because he's good, and not because of his last name. He's already proven to me that he's a better ballplayer than his father this season, because he does so many things all over the diamond that his father was not physically capable of doing.

 

And from everything I've read about the situation, Prince has every right to be angry with his father.

It's not merely that Cecil was a bad father, but that he continues to antagonize Prince. I cringe at all of this, because any family estrangement is sad, but the onus is definitely on Cecil in this case.

Sounds like Cecil is engaging in some revisionist history. Suddenly his gambling problem that led him to trash his own and his sons large stack of money is his ex-wife turning his innocent children against him? Sorry Cecil you don't need to be "a man" to know when your own father has put you through the ringer.

i really wish that this squabble would stay out of the media, any time either talks about it they don't look good. I though Prince's press conference last month didn't make him look good and this thing by Cecil doesn't help his case.

Funny that Cecil doesn't mention the time collection agents came looking for Prince at a minor league baseball game, looking for info on his father.

 

I agree that they should both probably shut up about it now, though.

Unless either the media suddenly loses interest (extremely unlikely) in the story or Prince/Cecil no longer want to talk about it, this is probably not going to stop anytime soon. Unfortunately, they both seem to want to have the last word on the issue, so there's no real end in sight at this point. Maybe someone will wise up eventually.

I don't know -- Kids oftentimes do not (or should not) be privy to all the things parents have on their plate.

 

I think it was quite over the top for Prince to have his dad escorted from the park.

 

The last thing I want to see in 2009 when the Brewers are in the playoffs, is stories about Prince v. Cecil -- rather than stories about the Brewers achievement.

 

I would be more impressed with Prince as a man, if he demonstrated an ability to forgive, rather than go tit for tat.

 

It's a mess for sure -- and I hope they turn some sort of corner, where the family can begin to heal.

I would love to see some reconciliation. Wouldn't it be great of Cecil would come out and take responsibility for what he did? I don't know if any apologies were ever given.

I think that was one of the big things too...Prince claims Cecil took a big part of his MLB signing bonus, and never apologized for it.

It looks like that new ESPN investigation show "E-60" (or something like that) will be doing a story on Cecil Fielder at some point, since he is all over the promos for the show.

The one thing in the article that I thought was interesting was that Cecilynn (Prince's sister) is now living with her dad.

Did anyone see the ESPN segment tonight? It's just incredibly sad to see that relationship fall apart like that. It can't be easy to have it featured on national television either. I know that's the price of being famous, but you gotta feel bad for Prince. He's still just a kid.

 

If anything, I hope it fuels him even more for next season.

I'm not convinced that it is Prince's responsibility to take the first step. Cecil is continually proving that he thinks he has done nothing wrong, and is going on a PR campaign to get the press to back him. Cecil certainly hasn't done anything to show that he has learned from the mistakes he made, as he is now trying to trash his son in the press for his (Cecil's) horrible actions.

It's a sad story to say the least. I can understand Prince being mad at the signing bonus thing, as I would be mad too. However, when Cecil tries to patch things up and Prince has him removed from the stadium that I don't agree with so I think there is a little bit of blame on both sides. Hopefully someday they work things out. I remember back in 2003 in Beloit I was at a game and Cecil was there watching Prince while eating at a picnic table.

Cecil claims Prince's mother turned him against him. I'm almost certain this whole thing comes down to how Prince's mom was treated and my guess is Prince saw it for himself and that's why he can't forgive him. He's probably doing Cecil a favor by not talking about it in detail publically. He would feel he was betraying his mom and you can talk all you want about a father/son relationship, but the mother/son bond is often stronger.

Both sides are responsible for sure, because one simple phone call could go a long way, and neither man seems willing to take that step.
