It is quite good. It's kind of overwhelming, though. It's long. But some great songs for sure. I was surprised by Shonna's songs.

 

I still miss Isbell, though. I'm going to the Milwaukee show next month.

Wanna hear some killer piano? Skip to appx. the 4:30 mark in Mozart's "Romance" from Piano Concerto 20 and listen to the next two minutes. Brilliant.

I agree it takes longer to digest this album than most albums because of the length. Shonnas songs sound really good live (esp Home Field Advantage), I saw their album release shows last weekend and even one of the throwaway tracks (me and my crystal meth) was pretty good and dark.

 

If you have not seen a Jason Isbell show you are in for a treat, same attitude of letting the music talk but he is getting more comfortable in the front role and interacting with the crowd more.

I gotta admit, I cringed at first when I heard Shonna was going to have three tracks... thought that took away from more COOLEY - but she has impressed me quite a bit. Her voice has this young Tanya Tucker thing going and it's quite good... Her stuff is more "pure country", as is Lisa's Birthday, but I'm fine with that, because it's real country and not "pop" country...

 

Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife gives me chills every time I hear it...

 

3 Dimes Down is brilliant - Cooley is quickly becoming my favorite - songs like Zip City, Women Without Whiskey, Marry Me, Where the Devil Don't Stay, and just about every track of his on BTCD are great... Self Destructive Zones is fun... Bob is cheesy but it's Cooley, so how can you not like it?

 

Patterson's got some classic Patterson stuff too... it's all good...

 

But overall, due to the length, certain tracks will "hit" with each listener at different times throughout the next six months... so this record will be around for awhile...

Cooley is definitely my favorite now. "World of Hurt" is my favorite DBT song of all-time. I love "Bob", too. This is his record, as far as I'm concerned.

 

Whatever happened to his solo album? I know that most of the Cooley songs on this album were to supposed to be for it, but why didn't he just go that route instead of putting them under the DBT umbrella?

 

Shonna sounds like Neko Case on her first couple albums.

Doves: "Lost Souls" - haven't listened to this album in years. "Catch the Sun" and "The Cedar Room" are both phenomenal songs.

Very arguably one of the ten best albums of the decade for carrying on the torch of Joy Division, yet without paying unequivocal homage to the band. Interpol was, in 2002, it's own band. What happened later is up to debate. Hardly anyone who has heard this fewer than once won't vouch for the genius. Even if it's the genius of mirroring.
