  1. That Baez contract is hilariously awful. I love how he has an opt-out after the 2nd year. Like you're going to find a bigger sucker then, Javy. Yikes.
  2. He's an 80 WAR pitcher with a career 127 ERA+ while being a complete badass in the postseason. He's clearly HOF-worthy on his career. All of the other stuff is in the discussion, but he's earned it on the field. He has the best resume of any eligible pitcher not in the hall as far as I can tell (non-obvious steroid users).
  3. Yeah, doesn't seem like anything great to me. Paying $11M for an average starter is fine. But there's obviously a lot of risk involved. I find it far more likely that that contract turns out badly.
  4. Lol. I forgot Schilling too, so I'm totally full of it. That's 2, maybe 3.
  5. I was hoping we'd get him in the Lucroy trade. I'd still like him on a minor league deal.
  6. Wow. I can't find one. Obviously we disagree on the steroid issue. Who are your 9, just out of curiosity? Edit: I lied. I would definitely vote for Rolen. Missed him the first time. And I would also strongly consider Pettitte.
  7. Neither is a SS though. Obviously lots of time to figure it out, but it has to be figured out.
  8. This is what I want to know. Urias as the backup SS is not a good plan. Love the acquisition though. I have no doubt he will help the team. Edit: It seems as though he has never played SS in the majors, so I'm guessing not. And through small major leagues samples does not seem to be a good defender anywhere other than 3rd and 1st. I'm sure there's more minor league data, but I don't know where to find it.
  9. Yeah, if he wants more than 3 years, it's an easy no from me. I wouldn't be very comfortable at 3/66 tbh. He's such a hack on defense that I find it really hard to believe Stearns is interested at all, which is a-ok with me.
  10. Marte seems very Stearns-ish. And would be a welcome addition.
  11. ...and that line of thinking right there is a problem. I mean, it depends on what you have for 5th OF options. If you have a better minor leaguer that's ready (seems unlikely at this point), then yeah, cut him. But you're paying him anyway, and he's fine as a 5th OF who sees few AB and plays great defense.
  12. I think he's a quite a bit better bat. Particularly last year. I also think there's almost no chance we sign him.
  13. What I love about this move is how aggressive it is. Like super-duper aggressive. Almost, dare I say, Melvin-aggressive.
  14. I think we might be stuck rolling with the same lineup unless we acquire a big time hitter in a trade. With Yelich and his exhorbitant salary kicking in next season and the raises due to the arbitration guys I just don't see how we can add a big salary like Castellanos even if he is exactly the type of hitter this lineup desperately lacks. It basically amounts to a trade of Cain for Castellanos (theoretically anyway). It's just a question of what you have to attach to Cain to get rid of him. Assuming that's the direction they want to go. That's a little tricky though, unless you think Taylor can handle CF every day (I don't, personally). There are many indicators that Stearns would not be comfortable with an OF of Yelich/Taylor/Castellanos defensively. Doesn't seem likely at all to me.
  15. Right? I have a "strong hunch" that that's a terrible theory.
  16. The Pavin Smith fascination eludes me. He is an OK hitter at this point, but he definitely can't play all 3 OF spots. He's a passable 1b at best. Atrocious in CF and bad in LF. He's a DH that can't really hit. .3 fWAR in 545 PA in 2021. That's bad. He's not even young. He's 26 in February. Marte is vastly better than Smith in every way other than control. I do agree on the positional problem with Marte. If you think he can be a decent CF (questionable, as he was very good in 2019, but not very good the last 2 years), then yeah, go for it. He's cost-controlled for 3 seasons and is a very very good hitter. If he can't play CF though, that leaves 2b or LF which are both full.
  17. Give me your examples of DS being "aggressive", I could give you more than these obviously, but give me TWO examples of moves that DS has done that can equal or match those that Melvin did in acquiring CC and Greinke. Melvin gave two craps about "prospects" and dealt them to win now at the major league level. I appreciate that in a GM. A guy not afraid to go "all in" even if in the end, it fails. IDC if it's football, or baseball or NBA. Do the two examples have to have occurred on the same day, because...... Oh wait, I can do that too.
  18. I would LOVE to know what they offered at the deadline. Anyway, I would say anyone is on the table other than Ashby and Perez for me. I wouldn't be interested in trading 4 top prospects for him, but I'd be comfortable with a Mitchell, Small and a couple other lower level guys type deal. I doubt Pittsburgh would be, but who knows?
  19. OK. Doug Melvin was never in Stearns' class, your opinion notwithstanding.
  20. Is it? Alderson is still going to be the head shot caller. It would likely be a lateral move for Arnold. Only instead of answering to David Stearns, he'll be answering to Sandy Alderson. Yeah, I would agree. Until Alderson retires (imminent), he's the boss. Maybe he would retire if they want Arnold bad enough. I know he wants to retire. Edit: Of course it's the Mets, so they may want to hire Arnold and then hire a POBO above him.
  21. Just spitballing here, but is it possible that he may have been upset that they renewed him after 2018 without a real raise? I remember Fielder being mad about that too. To me, that would make more sense than blaming the team for an arbitration loss, idk.
  22. I'd be willing to bet Counsell would strongly disagree with you here. There are trickle-down effects of him not being there.
  23. Having that entire pitching staff together next year (with full years from Ashby and maybe Ethan Small) keeps our window open for a few years. For sure. Now we just need Yelich to be at least "good" instead of "not good". Miami Yelich would be fine, although I'm not expecting it tbh.
  24. Jon Heyman reported last night that Stearns has 1 year left on his deal, which is news (atleast to me). Yes you can deny permission if the brewers are asked, but then you risk him not extending his deal That's true. In my mind, I thought we already knew that, but I realize now it was just an assumption until that point. Thanks.
  25. Obviously a great season. So many great pitching performances. Offense was a stinker, but 95 wins, division champs, best pitching staff ever constitutes a great season.
