  1. Pretty good deal for SD considering the opt out isn't until after year 5. And he's playing 3B presumably which is huge.
  2. Tough to get you excited huh? No. Not at all. This isn't a very exciting signing. He's a good player. The fit was always bad. Hence, meh. Edit: trwi7 expressed my concerns well.
  3. Lot of reaction to what was basically a throw away comment. I don't care about Braun's past much, but some do. And yeah I forgot about Hader. Although I really didn't hold that against him much personally. He was 17. Dumb stuff occurs at that age Also, Lawrie is by many accounts a knob, and it certainly isn't because of the duct tape/beer picture when he was 18 or whatever.
  4. Meh. Whatever. One of the really great things about last year's team was the absence of knobs (other than maybe Braun). Not a huge deal, but Lawrie is a class A knob.
  5. Would've loved him at that price. His wife is from Chicago. Could've been a factor.
  6. I agree. Rivera is the only relief pitcher I would have in.
  7. Have they done it in 140 innings? Poo-pooing Rivera's post season accomplishments seems......odd. Yeah, he blew a couple games. He was other-worldly in the post season overall.
  8. Dang it, that's a guy I would've happily taken a chance on. $1.5MM is chump change, but as CHL said, there's just no roster spot to guarantee him unless you're willing to send Davies down for sure (which I would've been). If it doesn't work out, you're not out much. It's possible they tried too, and he preferred SF for any number of reasons.
  9. Yeah, I'm having a hard time caring about this.
  10. I'm not sure about mid-April, but I've been saying all along that Hiura would be up as soon as they lock up that extra year of control. I did expect them to sign a versatile infielder to man 2B until his call-up, that would then be a super-sub thereafter. But now I think you might be right about getting by with the P/S platoon to bridge the gap. That player may very well be Dubon. The more I think about this, the more I think they're expecting Hiura to be their 2B this year.
  11. Extended at 3/30 with a team option. Meh deal for the Reds. I don't really like Gray though. Gave up a decent prospect and a high draft pick. I would not be pleased if the Brewers had made this deal.
  12. I'm thrilled with Grandal. Would rather have him on a 1 year deal for sure. I just wanted both. O well.
  13. Positional flexibility is key, whoever we bring in is likely only keeping the seat warm for a couple months. Agree. As I said last night, Lowrie is ideal (theoretically) because: He can play 2nd vs. Righties, with Shaw at 3b. He can play 3rd vs Lefties, with Perez at 2b, and hopefully Hiura quite soon. I like Gonzalez too, but I feel like we'd be paying for the versatility that he brings in the OF which I don't see as a need at all. Also, he hasn't played much 3b. And I worry that 2017 was an outlier. And his OBP is not good.
  14. Fingers crossed for Lowrie, or to a lesser extent, Gonzalez. The wording makes me think Lowrie, as Gonzalez didn't play 3rd last year. Lowrie makes more sense anyway. Just hope it's a short deal if it happens. Pretty exciting.
  15. Thank god. Although on a 1 year deal, wouldn't have been too bad.
  16. I don't really want to argue this as the mods have asked us not to, but the offseason isn't over. Last year was weird though I'll agree. WRT Grandal, Keith pointed out some of the reasons he may have balked at the Mets' offer. Those are the likeliest answers, but it could be something as simple as he didn't want to live in New York, or any number of other things. There's a very real chance he ends up making more than $60MMM over the next 4 years.
  17. There have been numerous reports he turned down 4/55-60 from the Mets. I don't know why people keep saying the system is broken. I imagine in time we'll find out what happened there. There are myriad reasons that he may have preferred this deal.
  18. Cain Lowrie Yelich Braun Shaw Aguilar Grandal Arcia Is dreamy.
  19. I love me some Marwin Gonzalez as well. Very little talk on him so far this offseason. He'd be a terrific bridge 2B, and would be another guy who could literally play anywhere if they need to get Hiura or Dubon in the lineup. Yeah, that'd be great too. Uber-versatilty. His OBP is pretty.low for his career. That would concern me a little. And Stearns seems to value it appropriately.
  20. Lowrie makes so much sense. When Hiura is up, Lowrie can play 3rd against lefties and 2nd against tough righties. Versatility, etc , etc Adding Lowrie would be another switch hitter that mashes right handed pitching. The lineup would be deadly against righties which is obviously the majority of starters they are going to face in the NL Central with the exception of the Cubs. Yep. And Lowrie helps against the lefties too. If we could get him on a 2 year deal, now we're talking. I also have a weakness for switch hitters. Especially in the NL. Edit: I see he's much better against righties as you said. Still way better than Shaw vs lefties though. Further edit: he was only better against lefties last year. For his career, good vs both, but better vs righties.
  21. Not the point at all, but probably a topic for another thread. He's taking a calculated risk and betting on himself while making himself filthy rich. There's not going to be a work stoppage. Players are making way too much money to risk losing it. But yeah, thread hijack and all. I'll stop.
  22. Yeah poor guy is only going to make $15,000 per inning. Life is rough.
