  1. Belgium down 2-0 and looking every bit as bad as that, then turns it on and scores 3 goals including one in the last minute of stoppage time. WOW. Not sure if Japan's coach knows the rules, but someone probably should have told him they ARE allowed subs. The two shoot-outs on Sunday were high drama too.
  2. Of course he can. Aguilar played 3B and the world didn't come to an end. Thames plays in the OF, Miller plays SS, I can go on and on.
  3. Why is he a moron for chasing a ring? We talk all the time about how players are in it just for the money, so what's wrong with a player wanting to win a ring? The only thing that matters to fans is loyalty. They dont care if players get rings or money. Which is ironic, because fans don't offer loyalty in return.
  4. Exactly the type of move they need. This team can not, should not, and will not empty the farm for this ridiculous TOR starter obsession. Just a foolish waste of resources. Happ gives us another legit starter, and that's what we need. Nelson not coming back, and who knows about Davies. If they can get a rent-a-Happ for Phillips or whatever, do it.
  5. Villar can play some 3B as well here and there vs LHP. Lopez is just another reliever that will disappoint you, believe me. I want to see QTC or Ramirez.
  6. Why is he a moron for chasing a ring? We talk all the time about how players are in it just for the money, so what's wrong with a player wanting to win a ring?
  7. I can't wait until there's a week of transactions (or lack thereof) that doesn't make me feel like it's Spring Training.
  8. AAA markets typically need to be MSAs ranked in the #35-70 range. Think Indianapolis, San Jose, Nashville, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Richmond, New Orleans, Salt Lake City. Madison is #86 and might be possible, but the Brewers may not want to risk cannibalization in people staying in Madison to watch the AAA team instead of driving to Milwaukee to watch the Brewers. Grand Rapids is #52 (over 1M in the MSA) and has an A-ball team. That's the market I'd target. I had no idea! I wouldn't have expected GR to be in the top 100, let alone #52.
  9. Have we really not learned by now that AAA stats don't tell anywhere near the whole story on whether a player is "ready" for MLB? Phillips- great stats last year and MLB performance pretty bad. Brought up again this year, looked pretty lost at the plate. Brinson- Huge numbers in AAA, brought up last year and completely lost. Even this year, has some HRs but hitting .188 or whatever it is. Those are two examples, but there are many. It's more than just the CS effect too. AAA is filled with a lot of pretty bad pitchers. So you need to look at things like whether the numbers are inflated hitting avg to below avg FBs off of bad pitchers? Is a player handling good off-speed stuff? Will the swing work at the MLB level? So many factors need to be considered, and that's just with the bat. Not to mention defense, handling the pitching staff (which I agree is over-rated, but is sill " a thing" at some level.) You just can't look at a guy and say ".894 OPS, he deserves a shot!" No, he doesn't deserve anything. Neither did Orf or anyone else. I would love to see him get a chance, but I'm not going to second-guess the organization when they have far more info to go on than we do.
  10. Pina would still be there. Nottingham would replace Kratz, not Pina. They could share the catching duties, whatever % that works out to would depend on them.
  11. Good points on both sides, but it may not matter. At some point, they may need to take the gamble and bring him up. They simply need bats, and Hiura COULD add instant offense. Sometimes when you're going for it, you need to gamble a bit. They could pick up a bat in a trade, of course, but I think the option of bringing Hiura up will continue to be an option they discuss on a regular basis these days.
  12. If that trio involves either Peralta or Hiura, I'm still sound asleep.
  13. I think we can put the "trade half the farm for a SP" talk to bed now.
  14. Everyone welcome aboard the Fab Five-0ne Freddy bandwagon, keep your hands and feet inside at all times.
  15. It's funny to me that Hager and Moore would likely produce better results than Orf at the MLB level, but that's the only name most people throw out there all season. Hager, for example, hit .892 in Biloxi before being promoted recently, and he doesn't strikeout a ton. And he's 25. And even at that, he isn't all that intriguing to me, but certainly moreso that Orf.
  16. Counsell also said there were no plans to send Santana to AAA. Just saying.
  17. That is the Brewers' odd DL philosophy summed up in one Tweet. I guess it's fun to play short-handed. I'm generally ok with handling these day-day injuries this way. You simply can't DL a player every time he's a little dinged up. But in this case I agree with you. Depth used to be a strength of this team. Now you have a bench of Sogard, a 50 yr old catcher, and nobody while Shaw is out. Bring Nottingham up, Phillips, anyone. The way they're scoring runs (or not) it's more important to have another bat to PH. What's the down side, Shaw may miss a few games he could have played? Big deal. Now that the DL is 10 days, this should be an easy decision.
  18. I actually feel better about Phillips than I did earlier this year. He's taking more walks, and my guess is they don't want to interupt his progress by bringing him up now. With Broxton, you have nothing to lose by bringing him up for 10 days.
  19. All of that makes sense, but we have no idea if that's true. The coaches, medical staff, etc. have all that information and will have a much better idea if he can handle the workload or not. I think sometimes we make too much of that stuff, it's not like he's working in a coal mine, he's playing 2B. Maybe the injury is behind him completely, we don't know. That said, yes, no way they force him up if he's physically not ready and/or his glove isn't ready.
  20. Advanced metric show he's been unlucky, could easily be at .650 OPS. Plus, he can play SS, CF, even emergency catcher. And he's a gritty veteran.
  21. NBA teams don't just pass on a talented big man for two rounds. There must be a reason?
  22. Last season he played in Milwaukee he had a .595 OPS. That's horrible, but much better than Arcia or Sogard. Plus Betancourt is versatile, having played all positions other than catcher in the past.
  23. Betancourt is currently playing in the Mexican League. Contributed last time the Brewers made the playoffs, and there is a need for IF. Wouldn't take much to sign him either.
  24. Yea, but it would take like two weeks for players to adjust and then no more need to call the corners like that anymore. Very simple solution. But that was my compromise, if we don't want to try that then I'm fine with the current pace of play. Corners are already a crapshoot with most umpires. This will do nothing but piss off more players, managers, and fans. I agree pretty much every suggestion I've seen about changing rules to speed up the game sounds crazy. Just as crazy as allowing umpires to change the strikezone at their discretion if they feel players are taking too long. It is crazy, I'll grant you that. I don't really like the idea myself, but at least in would be short term and "train" pitchers and batters to hurry up a bit. So it would suck for a couple weeks having umpires tinker with the strike zone. But I will take two weeks of pain without any official rule changes rather than clocks, limiting a pitcher's outing, limiting throws to first, etc. It would be a way to emphasize to the players to move it along or it will hurt them, and that message won't take very long at all. But, like I said, if nothing is done that's perfectly fine with me. Start by getting rid of instant replay and I would be thrilled.
