  1. Only confusing when you don't realize the agenda at hand.
  2. No, this is Stearns. As I said before, I have no idea why he had to have Shaw in the Thornburg trade or Anderson in the Segura trade. You get those guys when you're ready to contend and have holes to fill, not in the middle of a rebuild. Agreed, but I can still see Mark A saying he didn't want to tear it down to a 58 win team. He just strikes me as an Owner who always wants a team who is at least decent every year. And in that context, trading for guys like Shaw make sense. Bringing in Thames, Chacin, etc. makes sense.
  3. It's why you should trade guys like that after their hot/career year. Just like they did with Gomez. Anderson, Broxton, Villar, Pina, Knebel, etc. Especially while rebuilding. You may get burned by one of them for trading them away, but for the most part it will be the right decision. Braun, Shaw, Santana, Guerra etc. But no, we just had to trade for major league players to make our record respectable. Million dollar question, did Stearns want to continue rebuilding or did Mark A want to move the needle more to the "compete" side of the dial? Just knowing Mark A, I would bet he wanted to compete this year, without giving up too many prospects/ money. (Not all-in.) So many of us recognized last season as fool's gold, I just have to believe Stearns knew it too.
  4. It's why you should trade guys like that after their hot/career year. Just like they did with Gomez. Anderson, Broxton, Villar, Pina, Knebel, etc. Especially while rebuilding. You may get burned by one of them for trading them away, but for the most part it will be the right decision.
  5. Choi and Bethancourt should be up. I get the Orf love affair, but I will trust they know everything about him, and just don't think he's worth putting on the 40 man. He doesn't "deserve" to get called up, nobody does. Choi at least could provide a LH bat, and handle some starts at 1B. Bethancourt over Bandy is simply worth trying at this point, why not. He's better defensively than Bandy, and it would be hard to be worse at the plate.
  6. Yeah he didn't work as assistant GM of the Astros. Doesn't matter. That young whipper-snapper doesn't know what he's doing. He seems to value rookies over guys with some MLB experience. Arcia, Phillips, Suter, Hader, Williams, Woodruff, Lopez, etc.
  7. Two really hard hit line drives outs from Arcia, he has looked much better the last couple weeks
  8. More I thought about it Choi would have made sense. Aguilar is best when used in his role- against LHP. Choi could have manned 1B vs RHP until Thames comes back, with maybe a few more starts from either Braun/Aguilar vs RHP. At least there's a chance for decent production there. Franklin is redundant, and not in a good way. Villar and Perez can play SS in a pinch. I'm so sick of these Walsh/Sogard/Franklin type guys.
  9. Somebody warn TGI Fridays, they are about to get pelted with a hailstorm of baseballs.
  10. I was hoping it was Orf as well. Are you sure it's Jennings? Sorta looks like Broxton.
  11. Arcia has a weird .221 OPS vs LHP so far this season, that will certainly correct itself. Lots of knowledgeable fans here, but we all fall victim to the small sample size at times. One of six months in the books, and we act like the results so far = results of the entire season. Give it some time!
  12. I agree with Nottingham. It was only a year ago he was fading, now that he's hitting and defense is improving he needs to play every day. Bethancourt is not the future, so I have no problem bringing him up. Can't imagine he would be worse than Bandy, but worth taking the risk to find out at this point. That move should be done today, who knows when or if Voght will ever be back. Bethancourt is just 26 and was much higher rated as a prospect than Nottingham. He's simply better than Nottingham and he's not old. It's great that Nottingham has started to hit in a small sample but he hit just .209/.326/.369 at AA last year. When Bethancourt was in AA at age 21, he hit .277/.305/.436. Both have all the tools defensively and meet the eye test. They both look the part of starting catchers in the big leagues. Nottingham has fanned 20 times in 72 PA this season, while Bethancourt has fanned 15 times in 100 PA. That's an indication of which would fare better vs. major league pitching. Which is why I said Nottingham should stay in AAA all season. I don't care that Bethancourt at one point was a higher rated prospect, or what this numbers were 5 years ago. The future is Nottingham, just not this year. Now, if they bring Bethancourt up and he really performs at a high level, that would be a good problem to have moving forward.
  13. This is a perfect situation to try Bethancourt at C. Similar to the Sogard/Orf situation there is no down side. It would be hard for Bethancourt to be worse than Bandy. Bring him up, like yesterday. See how it goes for a while, and if he sucks bring Nottingham up. I just don't see any reason not to play it out that way. At SS, Arcia started out slowly last season too, then got red hot, and leveled off at the end of the year. It's one month, no reason to panic. Let him play every day and see wha tyou get. I don't see any other option here. 2B, just let Villar play every day for the rest of this month. Let him settle in and see what he can do. As with Arcia, his numbers aren't so low that he can't recover. At this point in the season one hot week will have a huge impact on the production numbers. Orf, whatever, sure why not as UT. But the real plan B is Dubon if his injury isn't too serious. If Villar isn't getting it done by AS break, and Dubon isn't an option, then you go out and rent someone (like Walker last year.) That's how I see it. What will really have a bigger impact on scoring more runs? Not marginally improving SS, 2B,C. The big bats need to carry the load, including Thames when he gets back.
  14. It shouldn't even be close who's the most "qualified." It's Blatt or Budenholzer...the former of which IMO is the most "qualified." The caveat emptor though is whether he learned from his time in Cleveland that he needs to actually have a relationship with his players. If not he'll just be Jason Kidd part 2 but a better basketball mind. Same problem with Fizdale and Gasol. Budenholzer fought with Schroder iirc as well. I prefer they go the way of someone that can mostly manage egos and have good relationships (while commanding respect) rather than an X's and O's guy. NBA players don't need X's and O's IMO. Couldn't disagree more. This team needs an Xs and Os coach. Badly. Managing personalities comes and goes, even the best coaches have difficulty with certain players. Giannis is easy to coach, and it all starts there. He is at that stage in his career where he demands respect from the rest of the team and can help the coach run the team the right way. As far as Becky goes, yea, impossible to make the argument she is the most qualified. If she's hired it will be because they think she's a good fir and/or for the publicity.
  15. I will second the advice on the deck. Sand down and stain and seal. I've done a couple of decks like this. I use a simple electric hand sander to strip the paint and stuff off the wood. Works great. This comes from a person who is not particularly 'handy' with projects like this. Not a real handy guy either, but I am cheap. So I have learned how to be handy enough not to have to pay for someone to do these types of things ; ) (I can't tell you how much YouTube has saved me over the years by showing how to do various DIY projects.)
  16. Segovia could always hit, the power is new. Just .254 slugging last year. That's hard to do! He has literally doubled that this year to .511. Injuries derailed him a little, but he is still age appropriate for Wisc at 21. But to be fair, he is repeating there this year. He is athletic and has some speed in the OF. Seems to really go after balls hard this season compared to last. He does not have a noodle arm, not a cannon either. I would say maybe average, but don't hold me to that. Definitely a prospect in my opinion, in that #25 range but still a prospect. When he gets promoted to A+ this season and he keeps hitting, then he'll really have my attention.
  17. At the very least, Sogard should never start. If he gets to PH once in a while, fine, until Thames is back. Because when Thames is back, they will need to shed a position player one way or another. If you want Orf to come up in the meantime, I'm fine with that, but I don't see him as an answer. Sogard is almost just as likely to get hot for a couple weeks. Let Villar play every day. If he doesn't improve by the time Dubon is healthy you can look at making that move.
  18. This was my concern going into the season. Thames, Aguilar, Shaw, Pina, Arcia, Santana all had their best seasons last year. In many of those cases, it was the first full season period. Yet I think we put a lot of stock into thining guys like Shaw were almost a lock to put up those numbers again. That makes it very difficult to project performance for this season. I expected a couple of those guys to improve or at least stay the same, and a couple to fall off. What we're seeing so far, most of them have fallen off. Of course, that's with the caveat there's still 5 months to go. Same thing is true for Anderson by the way. Huge season last year, and there's a decent chance he will revert back to what he was the rest of his career.
  20. Biggest difference between the Rockets and Bucks, their star player (Harden) is one of their 3 point shooters, while Giannis is not. That is what separates LeBron, Harden, Durant, etc. from Giannis at this point. Those guys can score a lot of ways, including hitting a couple 3s in crunch time with the ball in their hands.
  21. I would sand it down thoroughly, then just stain and seal, as you said. Then seal every year or two, so you don't have to go through the process again in a few years. ; )
  22. That's what I envision. It all depends on who is rested, game situation, etc. But I can see times where Hader pitches the 8th (or part of the 8th) and just stays in to close the game in the 9th. Especially at first, since I'm sure they won't want to press Knebel too hard for his first month or so back. But it's pretty clear they are committed to being flexible with the pen. For example, I could see times where Hader is used from the 6th-8th innings in a game where the Brewers have a 1 run lead. You can call that "middle relief" and technically that's true, but it's far from a mop-up role in that situation.
  23. They are one short in the pen, so first move would be send Phillips down to make room for Logan. When Knebel returns, then I could see Suter going down. Then it gets interesting when Thames comes back, either Sogard or Perez will need to be DFAd. Although, with Sogard's luck there will probably be another injury by then to save him for another month.
