  1. FVBF, I think you're overestimating what you need to get into Madison. I know of a couple kids from my class ('06) that got 26's on their ACTs and had a GPA of ~3.6 that were accepted, they were both white males. ACT scores and your GPA aren't the only things they look at. If you have a 3.7 in tough classes (I'm guessing you do since you took AP US History this year), that'll be looked at much more highly than a 4.0 in the easiest classes your school offers. It also helps if you're in extra curricular activities. I know you mentioned you play baseball so that's probably a plus. If you maintain your high GPA next year while taking more challenging courses, I'd guess you'd get into Madison, even with "only" a 28 on your ACT. You just have to make sure you apply early enough. If you're not sure what type of job in gov't you'd want or how to get into it, your adviser could probably help you out a lot. I go to UW-La Crosse and I'm a Poly Sci major, and my adviser gave me a big packet on several different jobs you could get into with that particular major. I remember there being a section on jobs in government.
  2. The nerve of Braun/Hart not getting hits off Cliff Lee, Ervin Santana, Joe Nathan, K Rod, and Mariano Rivera.
  3. Weeks- D+ Definitely a disappointment offensively. A little better defensively but nothing spectacular. I know his BABIP is really low, but his line drive % is also really low. Hardy- B Pretty poor first couple months and aweome last few weeks Braun- B Would be nice to see his AVG. and OBP. go up. Seems alright in LF, hopefully he'll soon learn to not play too deep. Fielder- B- Has been a little above average offensively for a first basemen, defense still pretty poor. Hart- A- Most consistent good player on the team. Hall- D Starting to pick it up but doesn't really make up for a pretty awful first couple months Branyan- B+ Even with his slump he's been a huge addition Cameron- B- He's been slightly above average offensively and good defensively. Kendall- B+ He's basically been what we thought offensively but excellent at throwing out runners. Counsell- C+ For a backup middle infielder he's fine. Kapler-A Unreal that he continues to hit this well. Dillon- I agree with thablingster, not nearly enough PA's to really know. Rivera- B+ Has hit very well in very limited time, not so great behind the plate. Sheets- A Even with a few "shaky" starts recently has great numbers, has been healthy Sabathia-B (in his two Brewer starts) Parra- B He's really turned it on lately. Still walks a decent amount of guys and they'll probably have to limit his innings soon though. Bush- B- His ERA is basically right around his career numbers, and for a 4/5 starter 4.5 is pretty good Suppan- C- Started out pretty well but has looked terrible recently. McClung B I'm still shocked he's pitched as well as he has. Villanueva C Was bad as a starter, pretty good in the 'pen. Mota D Wasn't really expected to be good but still frustrating to see him suck. Gagne D Not close to earning 10 mil. Riske D+ Really underwhelming so far. Shouse B. Torres A Savior in the bullpen.
  4. How long until they have to call it a tie? I doubt they'd want to pitch Lidge three innings...
  5. I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I didn't mind Berman too much last night. Reilly really added nothing to the table. The whole eight white guys and "bad night to be an atheist" should not have been said. It also really bothered me when he said "And Hamilton got all those tattoos while he was high on drugs" like it was so matter of fact he snorted cocaine and immediately drove out to the tattoo parlor. He also said "Amazing Braun already has 57 homers in only two seasons!" probably not realizing it's been like 1 1/4 seasons. Other than him I thought it was pretty okay.
  6. At times it seemed like he would flat out refuse to give someone credit. I don't know how many times he'll criticize someone's defense if someone makes a nice shot, or criticizes the offensive player when the defender makes a good play. I started to dislike Nantz when Tiger Woods rose to the scene and it was obvious Jim had the hots for him.
  7. I'd still rather they not throw 100+ pitches consistently. Every once in a while 120 pitches is fine half-way through the season, but I hope it doesn't happen too often. Sure Sabathia is a workhorse and pitched 240 innings last year, but he also pitched pretty awfully in the playoffs. There's probably no way of proving that is was/nt a result of him logging a ton of innings in the regular season but who knows. I understand the want to have them throw so much with the shakiness of the bullpen, but hopefully the Brewers pick up someone as their "8th inning guy" so if Sabathia/Sheets "only" go 6 innings we don't have to hold our breath the last three innings of the game.
  8. Phillies 89-73 Mets 86-76 Marlins 81-81 Cubs 93-69 Brewers 88-74 Cardinals 86-76 Diamondbacks 85-77 Dodgers 81-81
  9. The recognition is definitely sweet. As long as it doesn't mess up his scheduled start in San Fran, which I don't think it does, it's fine. Funny how both Volquez and Lincecum pitched this weekend though, I'd imagine they were the top two choices otherwise.
  10. He was given a chance to come back a few weeks after he retired and didn't take it. Make a definitive football decision for once in the past five offseasons.
  11. I really don't see how this is any advantage to the Brewers. The Cubs are awesome at home, it'll be surprising if they don't win at least 4 of those 6 games. The Brewers will probably be lucky to split the 6 games at St. Louis. This is a big advantage to the Cubs.
  12. I'd be very surprised if more than 3 Brewers finish with more than 30 home runs. If I had to bet I'd say two will do it, though Hart should have a decent shot. I still think there's a possibility of 6 guys with 20+ though, I can't imagine that's been done too often.
  13. This probably sounds harsh, but if anyone gets those Triple Play Trivia questions wrong they likely know very little about baseball. One time the choices were Counsell, Rivera, and I want to say Kapler (someone who was obviously not hispanic), and the first question goes "This player was born in Puerto Rico." Seriously?
  14. I'd guess that I watched Home Alone all the way through 40 times between the ages of 5 and 10. Jumanji was really entertaining when I was around his age too so that might be a good suggestion. How about Little Rascals? (I'm not sure if this should be in blue or not).
  15. Ummm...no. The problem is when he gets lit up again and it turns into an 11-7 game, you'd have to bring in Villanueva or someone else today anyway...so now you have two guys unavailable for tomorrow. Of course that would give people something else to criticize Yost about, so its all good. The starting pitchers have been taking a toll on the bullpen the past week or so, and someone has to get the outs. Weren't a whol lot of other options. I'm not saying let him throw the whole inning no matter what, but why not give him a few base runners and take him out if he gives up 3 runs or so. I would've rather seen Riske or Gagne because they'd likely only pitch one inning tomorrow if they get in but nothing more. If Villanueva would get in tomorrow it could be 2-3 innings. It's probably not that big of a deal but I didn't want to see Villanueva in a game when we're up 10 and we play the next day.
  16. Have teams always played 3 series against 1 non-divisional foe? Last year the Brewers got the Giants two series at home, and this year they go to Atlanta twice. I don't really remember that happening before last year but maybe I just didn't pay any attention to it. Just my opinion of course, but this is how I'd rank the teams TLB mentioned in terms of how worried I am about them: Philly, NYM, StL, LAD, Arizona, Atlanta, Florida. I know Philly's been struggling lately but with that offense they could pretty easily go on a tear.
  17. Holliday was named as the starter today to replace Soriano so I'd have to imagine Burrell makes it now, I mean there's really no argument against him making it now. The whole marketing/dedication showed by the Brewers and its fans is pretty crazy. Braun went from likely not starting to 2nd highest vote total in a day, and Hart beat out some really good/popular players. However I've gotta say while it was cool that they had computers set up at Miller Park for people to vote, I thought it was kind of weird that people were voting during the game.
  18. To be honest I think he pitched better on Saturday night against Pittsburgh than he did against Toronto a few weeks ago, but either way he's been pretty lights-out at home recently. So who of Bush/McClung/Suppan goes to the bullpen? I'm hoping McClung...
  19. Who are they going to use as a long relief guy tomorrow if Parra gets knocked out early? They might as well have thrown Mota out there again to see what happens, isn't he the odd man out anyway when Suppan returns?
  20. Before the start of this series, the Rockies were 12-31 on the road. The Brewers now need to win just to salvage a split, gross http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif.
  21. Hah, I like the analogies. I'd probably give him a C. There are certainly times I want to give him a much lower grade, ie bullpen management and how he handles his starting pitchers. "McClung's struggling this inning, but if he gets these next two guys he'll get a 'W'!" On the other hand, after watching some other teams play, I'd have to imagine I'd be going berserk much more often. Bob Melvin double switches guys out of the game as early as the 4th inning and bunted with the clean-up hitter. Clint Hurdle didn't bring in a lefty in the first two games of this series to face Prince in a high leverage situation. He hit a home run and was then IBBed. I like that Yost doesn't play small ball really at all, and rarely intentionally walks guys (except that stupid Braves game at MP...) There are definitely worse managers than Ned, but I still don't like him too much.
  22. Damn you Glennron! I have 9/18. Not that it mattered, but I was going to put 9/18 til I saw yours so I was pretty happy when he got to 19. If only that moonshot wasn't hit by Kohansky in the 8th I'd have won...
  23. Read through all the threads on the Major League, Transactions & Rumors and Off Topic pages before I go to bed.
  24. If the guy pitching to Braun during the derby throws some in the dirt do you think he'll still swing? Zing! Seriously though I kind of wish he wasn't in it cause of the hole hand thing, but I guess maybe it's not really a deal anymore? I don't even know if I'd watch anyway, Chris Berman yelling "Back back back!" is what I imagine hell to be like.
