One of the small market playbooks is to hoard prospects until you get a window, then sell them for the expensive rentals you can’t afford to sign in FA (CC Sabathia).
I can't decide if it's a good thing or a bad thing but we would have all 3 OF spots locked down for 3 years. No prospects, FAs, platoons, anything unless there was an injury.
So they used all of the budget but not the 5% overage? If I'm reading that correctly, that's pretty good. Ideally yes they would use the 5% but that's kinda like threading the needle, very difficult to do while still being aggressive.
They probably wanted to keep him for SP depth. Or maybe they have him marked for trade talks and don't want to risk talking his value if he moves to BP and gets blown up once or twice.

That's 4/5th of a rotation and it assumes Peralta and Woody are both gone. Then we still have Hall, Ashby, Myers, Henderson. So I don't really mind trading a SP as long as they pick the right guy to send out the door.
Report that the Reds are looking to add a middle of the order bat. Trading for Suarez would be the most Reds thing ever, I hope he goes there if not us.
I'm not too attached to Boeve or Myers. Myers would be nice depth to keep next year but he's probably the odd man out of the 5 man even if we lose all our vets.
It's a homecoming for Jansen Junk. 0.16 HR/9 I don't think I've ever seen a number so low for a starter. 1 HR in 55 innings. No strike outs and absolutely no walks. Just a weird, extreme stat line.
Wow I thought this might happen but I thought Suarez would get traded first and McMahon would be the consolation prize for the big money team that lost out on Suarez. NYY could still be in on Suarez though with McMahon as backup but less likely now.
It’s hard for me to imagine Suarez going anywhere besides NYY. Currently Josh Vivas is listed on top of their 3B depth chart, and he’s absolutely awful. .164/.270/.255. They are 90% playoff odds so definitely buyers. They love power bats. They have pitching prospects and they don’t mind trading non elite prospects because they can just sign vet replacements to fill out a roster or trade for another guy next year.
Hard to peg a value on Yoho. He kind of looks like Devin Williams with 6 years of control, and that would be quite valuable. But I don't really understand why he's not pitching for the MLB team. 19th ranked prospect and a reliever i don't blink twice trading him away, 6 years of control for a top 10 (let's say) closer that would definitely not be worth Suarez rental.
In a vacuum I would do Pratt for Lopez. In reality I'm not so sure. We end up with a problem of what to do with 2 fairly similar players (Ortiz and Lopez) and what effects you would get from the change. Maybe it's some sort of platoon failure. SS and C i don't like changing up those positions late in the season honestly when the defense is working. If Ortiz was still hitting like his May numbers I would be all for it.
If they add a really good bat like Suarez then they could also use LF. Collins Durbin Suarez 3 players for 2 spots, it's not too bad of an idea for an August lineup.
I think if AZ calls us they ask for Logan Henderson, and if we say no to that they call the Cubs, Yankees and Mariners. Maybe Myers can get it done, maybe need a sweetener, but I think they would try to aim higher.
