  1. His WAR was legitimately outstanding. Second among all second basemen is incredible. His SB offsets some of his lack of power and isn’t necessarily captured in his hitting metrics. A guy who singles a lot but steals second gets you to the same spot as a double. It’s not equal because stealing has a risk. But stolen bases also function to harass pitchers from their focus on the next batter, the first baseman is covering less ground holding the runner, etc. Brice is still an ascending player who needs to get more consistent and work on his stamina. I feel like he wears down at times. I think you will see that as the next phase of his development. When people are mystified by the Brewers’ success when they look at the team on paper, Turang is the type of guy that gets mis-read. This a high quality player and Murph has been right about believing in him.
  2. Great way to frame it. I’d say one mid tier and two lottos, or possibly the two mid tiers. Either would be better than a comp pick. The organization likes to get back control and it works in terms of roster sustainability in a small market. The Brewers have metrics and analytics they like that will help identify the prospects. They won’t take back guys without those attributes.
  3. Hayes is an interesting option that I hadn’t thought of. I have liked him going back to the draft process as he was a guy I wanted us to draft back then. I am hoping for one of Hayes, McMahon or Moncada. They can make salary room by discarding dollars elsewhere to pay for one of them. Then trade Williams for prospects with good analytics although I would not expect a haul in terms of name value and pedigree. Keep the young OF corps. Hope ascending players like Frelick, Mitchell, Turang and Ortiz keep improving and that Chourio keeps it going. The defense orientation should continue. The bullpen looks strong on paper even without DW and hopefully they can continue to piece together a solid rotation. Still bullish with a steady stream of prospects developing.
  4. Great article, Jake. Good data. Mike Boeve is another guy. He might not be ready out of the gate but all he does is hit. 300 AB at Double A with an .820 OPS and .306 average. If he starts 2025 at AAA and performs similarly, he could be a mid-season factor. He bats left handed. He’s from the same neck of the woods as Wade Boggs and has that type of look and approach (although I’m not comparing his ability to a guy with 3000 hits and in the HOF).
  5. @Joseph Zarr what would you say is the level of play? About equivalent to AA?
  6. I don’t think a division winner should be subjected to a three game playoff. Having said that, IMO our angst is exacerbated by the fact that we haven’t found a year where we overachieved and stole a short series from a better team. Maybe we are due and we will get there soon based on luck of the draw. But so far it hasn’t been our thing.
  7. It’s moot because he’s leaving but not only did he have an .800 OPS and very good run-producing stats for a SS, but he is well known for intangibles that aren’t seen on a stat sheet but are crucial to winning such as leadership, resilience, etc. To me it’s a foregone conclusion that he’s gone and certainly the Brewers have known for at least a year. So I’m sure they are building contingencies for adding an IF with run production capability. Trotting out a weak bat with Ortiz and Turang isn’t going to work. That would be three of four IF dragging down team power.
  8. I like Frelick. There’s a sparkplug factor. There’s a fire and competitiveness. Toughness. He seems well built with thick legs and a nice, efficient swing without wasted movement. But he’s got to drive the ball. He had 2 homers and around 30 rbi and an OPS that’s too low relative to his average. Those numbers are really anemic for as much as he plays. It’s not like he was at the top of the order either. His body tells me he’s capable of getting extra base hits and tapping into some gap power. To me, this is crucial for his development. With his legs, he can develop power to drive the ball and it’s not like his upper body is scrawny. He was an accomplished football player. As a third baseman or corner OF, you need a higher OPS especially with Adames’ .800 OPS coming off the books from a traditionally non-run producing position. We need pop at 3rd to compensate. I’d love to see him do it but it’s a leap of faith right now. Something is off with the approach.
  9. If we hold Devin, wouldn’t we get a high pick back if he leaves via free agency? So that helps the return. Even though his stats are great, I’m skeptical on a great return. If we get someone in an organizational list from about 7-10 and a couple of other guys with peripherals we like (control, spin rate, breaks and movement, etc), that might be what we get. If we can get a pick like we did with the Burke selection, that’s possible too. I will be pleasantly surprised if we get a haul. I’m expecting analytic darlings who aren’t greatly ranked. Maybe one prospect on the lower end of the top 100. But, the alternate draft pick status means teams need to make it worth our while. We have a good pen without him and I expect Yoho to add to it.
  10. A guy like DeJong makes sense. Good pop and only 31. He could be a good bridge until hopefully Pratt and Made get here (hopefully) over the next 2-3 years. Boeve may be MLB ready by mid-year too to split PT. I hope Tyler Black gets more of a chance as a DH or Swiss Army knife. Now that Jackson, Sal, Garrett and Brice have gotten their feet wet, maybe they can all take a step forward as their comfort levels increase. That could offset the delta between Adames and a guy like DeJong. With Yoho coming up, I think we can withstand trading Devin.
  11. The Brewers have been consistently good since David Stearns came and in and it has continued with Arnold. They have developed internal analytics which have helped on the field and in metrics used to select talent; built up better relationships in Latin America; have drafted better; and player development has improved. In prior decades, the teams of at least 1978, 1979, 1987, and 1992 were no doubt playoff teams by today’s standards. So counting the number of playoff appearances in recent years is not comparable. But there were steep falloffs around those playoff runs. The years between 1992 (when Molitor left) and 2007 were brutal. That was an incredibly long period of time that was so bleak and not fun. We had another drop off even after Fielder left. The nice thing about the current regime is we have turned over the roster in recent years and stayed competitive (2020 being a farce). It’s fun to be a fan of an organization like this.
  12. I’m not an economist but wouldn’t you make a lot more money as an entity if you cut out the middle man (Bally’s)? Sure, you will have overhead but all the profit goes to you.
  13. Does this mean you need to stream it via MLB or will there be local TV availability in Milwaukee?
  14. They aren’t stagnating when they’ve overhauled the roster since then. They essentially rebuilt yet stayed competitive. It’s borderline remarkable.
  15. Anyone know why they run camp in California? I’m sure there’s a reason. Scrimmages with other teams?
  16. Yeah they’ve got good young talent, but just need leadership and direction. Pirates with Skenes and some other young high draft picks may start putting it together too. We have got to keep getting better. Hopefully our system and player development will keep it rolling!
  17. Can someone explain the origin of the Greg Counsell running joke? Someone asked me and I didn’t know, although it’s hilarious. Thanks in advance.
  18. I have to wait a whole month? Love both of your work. It’s very appreciated and informative. Are you the “Jack” on the podcasts? Or is that someone else?
  19. It’s hard to blame Murphy for going to his closer with a 2-0 lead in the ninth.
  20. The scary thing is he could get a lot stronger over the next 4 years or so.
  21. You’d think that the MLB could be more profitable by itself. No rights fees. I assume with Sunday ticket revenue, all the NFL teams split it evenly. If the big market teams want to parse themselves out separately, maybe there is still a large consortium of teams who get involved with a Sunday ticket type of deal and split it evenly.
  22. No one can overstate how incredible he was in an elimination game at age 20 leading the team. It was a marvel. Eighth inning, backs against wall, no sign of offense, and he hits his second homer. There’s no praise too high for what he did.
  23. Good observation about Ashby starting an inning. I think we should be prepared to have 4-5 relievers go, at least.
