I wouldn't draft Hoffman seeing as he's coming out of College and will miss a full year. So he would hit the ground running age 22 in RK ball. With Limitations on his work load. Then you best case scenario get him through A ball and he sees a couple/few starts in AA at age 23. He spends age 24 in AA with your progression hope that he jumps in to AAA. A season at AAA at 25? Finally our #1 pick makes the team at age 26(miraculously w/o another lost season due to TJ) It's 2019 and he joins the Major League club. Yeah right. Hoffman shouldn't be drafted in the 1st rd. He has zero leverage in signing a contract. You don't pay him 1st rd money when you can get him for 2nd/3rd round money. Let some other team waste their cash in the 1st rd on a player to miss a year's worth of time. This would be different if he were a HS kid like Kolek coming down with TJ. I'd draft him at 12 just because you know on the lengthy timeline to the Majors he's only 22 when he makes the team. Not 22 before ever throwing a Professional Pitch as Hoffman will.

Do you know where I think the troubles stemmed from? How many times was Gomez,ARam,Segura hit by pitch in the StL Cardinal series? Was it B2B on ARam that one game? I'm sorry but I fully believe the club went in to that series with the thought process to injure 1 or 2 of our batters. Because let's face it, we all know the bench players on this team are not every day players you want in your lineup. I called it from the beginning of that series to watch StL throw at our batters looking to weaken the team. And I feel they did. Accomplished it. Am I going to lose faith in this team? No! I like Gennett and I believe in Davis. Segura hit a HR this series that's a positive. Braun and ARam being in the lineup matters a bunch and they'll get back in there. The pitching is great and I believe they'll stay good to great when looking at expectations. Yeah I read Peralta gave up a lot of hits today, well he's a Groundball pitcher. There's going to be games where they all seem to find the hole. But majority of the time his Groundball tendencies will keep him a very effective pitcher. It's why he kept the damage to 2 runs. How good is that? I read RRR say that Arroyo's offspeed offerings over and over work and are very effective when batters are aggressively swinging away at them. It works in to his favor. The hitters needed to be more patient....Well? This wasn't the first time Arroyo ever pitched, you know he's throwing off speed over and over again. So why does that statement get made after the game and not read more like. "We knew he was going to throw offspeed over and over and we were successful in waiting back working the count not offering at any of them. If he locates them for strikes good on him. But we were waiting for the Fast Balls he throws that are like BP and we crushed them. It was a good job executing that approach." Anyway we're 4-6 in our last 10. Who else is 4-6 in their last 10? StL and Cinncy. This little stretch isn't setting us back, taking the team out of contention.

Yes he could let those guys go multiple innings. 2ip at least. But then when are they available again? 1 day off? Or 2? Now you run in to a situation where you need a Righty out of the pen come the 8th inning and Thornburg/Kintzler/Wooten were used up in the 5th-7th innings. Duke was brought in to get a lefty out to finish the 7th inning. Smith went 2ip the previous day and isn't available. You turn to KRod? The concern with running pitchers multiple innings to give a few other guys rest for a day, can set you up with needing that particular guy and he's unable to be used. When really using Smith for 1 ip and 1 other RP for the other 1ip could have worked where you can still use them both out of the bullpen the next day. Now you could go my thinking that a guy can go 2 ip/ Smith 7-8 one night. Thornburg the other 7-8ip the next night. Except when they give up 2ERs in their outing do you question him then? Why didn't he turn to the pen for help? Oh because hes the idiot who employs using guys multiple innings every other game to get to KRod or finish it. And when it doesn't work it turns awful. Not an enviable position to honestly be the decision maker on. Arm-Chair Managers don't know how the RP core says they are feeling on a day to day basis. Now the article was about using your closer in a tie game while on the road meaning if he does his job, you play extra innings...Do you bring your closer back out for the 10th? Now he goes 2ip in a tie game and your team loses in the 11th. The next two days your team now has the lead and the first day you can't use your closer because he went 2ip the night prior in a TIE GAME. The DeFacto closer that night blows the game. 0-2. The following day you do use your closer but it's apparent he's not sharp. Why? the 2IP a couple days ago? He blows the game. 0-3. That manager needs to be FIRED!!!! 3 winnable games and it's blown because he used his closer in a tie game because he doesn't have faith another guy in the pen can't come in the 9th inning and hold the game to send to extra innings. Right? It's a Lose-Lose thing being a Manager. I'm not justifying those managers are right to never use their Closer in those 9th inning tied game. It really depends on the opponent, who's coming to bat in the order. I'd hope RRR uses KRod in the situation vs. the Cardinals or Reds when the top of the order is coming up or #s 2-4. But in a game on the road vs. say Colorado? Or any HR hitter Friendly non-Central opponent. I'd trust my pen to go out there get it done and save KRod for what he's destined to do....close games. Not extend them.
-
Yes they will seek somebody in July. Who? That really depends on the roster's health situation. Braun/Gomez being out you figure a Replacement is acquired for the stretch run. ARam and 3b? Of course 1b could be a sought after improvement by then. Right now, too early to make guesses. Gennett/Weeks fail/ Furcal from Miami? Bonifacio? Davis struggles any OF that's available. Let's get through May first before creating guesswork acquisitions.

I may be limiting my worth but when you are talking $40 million, I would not bat an eye and accept that deal immediately. For me, it would be a no brainer. Give me the financial security now and allow me to showcase what I can be and get the large contract later. Put another way, Segura is a FA after 2018, or when he is finishing his age 28 season. Any extension would certainly require one or two years of FA buyout. For the sake of the argument, let's say it buys out two seasons (6 Yrs/$40mm), making Segura free after his age 30 season. Assuming he turns into what he flashed last year, at 30 he will still be a plus defensive SS with above average bat and speed. That type of FA at his age certainly would command an $80+ million deal in 2020, given Jose Reyes received 6 YR/$106mm in 2011 after his age 28 season. For Segura, I think its an awfully big risk given: Since June 1, 2013 - end of 2013 season Segura batted: .261/.292/.354 4 HR 27 RBI 29 SB in 379 AB extrapolated into a 162 game average is .261/.292/.354 7 HR 47 RBI 50 SB And has started 2014: .236/.269/.326 1 HR 5 RBI 5 SB in 89 AB extrapolated into a 162 game average is .236/.269/.326 8 HR 36 RBI 36 SB Or combined since June 1, 2013 is: .235/.284/.310 5 HR 32 RBI 34 SB in 468 AB Given all this, please give me $40 million today. Something isn't right with your numbers. Segura can't possible bat .235 when since June 1,2013 to end of year he batted .261 and his start of 2014 he batted .236. .236/.261 combined>.235

What do you think of our Wang? Slot Worthy?
brewcrewdue80 replied to lcbj68c's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I raise those questions because what the Brewers are attempting to do is so amazingly without precedent. I won't post in this thread anymore and just let Wang answer our questions. This is pretty much where I'm coming from also. It's clear that some feel like this is no big deal and that teams do this all the time. I can't think of any time where a team has allowed an A ball caliber pitcher take up a roster spot with basically the assumption he he will be on the roster the entire year because of his "future potential" and we can't afford to lose him despite how poorly he pitches this year. A position rule 5 guy is a little different imho. At least a position rule 5 player can usually can fill in defensively or perhaps they have speed and can be used as pinch runners. An A ball pitcher is usually going to do much more damage than good when they are called upon. It's like the team has basically thrown in the white towel when ever they decide to put him in the game. I don't feel like that's the role of a "mop up" guy. I think they should be at least relied upon occasionally to keep the game within reason with some hope of making a come back. I personally don't think Wang is capable of doing that at the MLB level at this point in his career. I'll also agree that only Wang will settle the argument posed in this thread. At some point in the future (possibly 2 or 3 years from now) we will hopefully see if this experiment worked. I honestly hope I'm wrong and that Wang turns out to A) not hurt us this year and B) be a contributing factor to the success of the Brewers in future years. Look at the Bench depth we have with Position players vs. RP depth. Trying to hide a rule 5 position player can turn outright ugly when Gomez/Braun/ARam/Lucroy would all go down to injury. And suddenly you're left with this rule 5 position player needing to start every day for a length of time. Now Wang, as a losing the game fill in innings guy? How does that really hurt the team? The team has a AAA farm stocked with pitchers that can come in and pitch realistically well if Henderson,Kintzler, KRod were all to go down to injury at the same time. But replacing Gomez/Braun/ARam/Lucroy with their replacements and suddenly having to insert that rule 5 position guy in to the starting lineup regularly? Now the team depends on that guy to perform well every inning of every game. Wang? Under the injury riddled RP situation? You still can use him as the long relief due to a poor start and being more than likely behind 2+runs. So the situation he's in will always be at low impact to the overall team's record. Not like that position player who if required to start for a period of time. Wang is a complete lotto ticket worth buying. He only had 13games of pro ball to go on before being eligible to acquire him. But in those 13games he showed enough to spark interest. This isn't your typical rule 5 pick up. Wang would have 4 more years typically before he'd even become eligible to get picked up via rule 5. More than likely Brewer Scouts predict he would be in the Majors before that time came. So, they tabbed him under the rule 5. What's better? A 5years yet to make it in to the Majors prospect who's 25+? or, a 21yr old with 1 year 13games under his belt who had successful numbers? -
Nice to see the team win a game they should when looking at the pitching matchups. Wonder how Arizona feels about not trading for Gallardo last year? About Wang, somewhere I read RRR says he's their long man(from behind of course) 5 run lead with 3 innings to go after giving up 4+1inherited in 3ip his last time out certainly would make me question using Wang for the 7th and on. I said it in the Wang thread, he's Livan Hernandez 2012, this year. Wang will continue to come in when behind after a starter's poor outing and eat up some innings. If Wang goes out there for 2-3IP every week from here on out you're staring at 44-66 more innings from him. How many IP as a RP should he log to properly assist the team's relievers to get their fair rest over the course of the season? 50? 60? I'd rather continue to save him with the long relief role when trailing. Toss Wang out there for the 9th because we're up 5, it stands that today the team needs him for long Relief and RRR used him up and he's unavailable. So what's better the 1ip or the possible 2-3ip the following day you need from him? I followed the Game on gamecast the first 2innings and Garza's pitches were all over the place. Now since I'm not watching the game I don't know if he just missed the spots where Lucroy set up, or if Garza truly was all over the place unable to throw accurately. I have a lot of faith Garza will turn it around. But it's getting a little frustrating he's the #5 on this team at this point when we have him under contract for 3+seasons. More outings like the first start vs. Atlanta please Garza!

I think you are premature on this one Coach. Dead Simmons, Wily possesses one of the highest velocity FBs in the game. He also has a tremendous GB rate. A slider that improves as his K pitch on top of the FB and he's actually capable to turn in to ELITE ACE in all of the NL. And I think the stats back up what he's becoming. It's just going to take the National Media awhile to take notice when he's pretty much looked at as the #4 on the staff behind Lohse,Gallardo,Garza. I said it in the Playoff Pitcher thread, I think Wily becomes the Game 7 guy when this season is over.
-
It just goes to show you how destiny must work. Because 2013 Boston got production out of Nava better than Nava gave at AAA in his career. Carp was great. Stephen Drew played so well he's unable to play this year due to declining the QO he's not worthy of. Boston's staff outpitched beyond their ability....Just no way do I still believe the Red Sox were a 97 win team...heck I wouldn't have believed 87 wins last year. And I look over the Boston team and wonderment from them, and I get that feeling seeing this unfold for Milwaukee thus far this year. My word I hope it turns true! Destiny 2014 Brewers Champs.
-
Too early to really make this decision. Because as of today one has to say Lohse/Gallardo toss up. But my guess is that Peralta just looking at his stats, will become the Horse we ride when the time comes. How do you go against the leading GB% guy while still posting a 7+k/9 pitcher? I'm going to think Peralta continues to improve as the season goes on like last year and he's up to 8k/9 with still under 2BB/9. The BABIP% will decrease as will the HR/FB % making his ERA continue to remain under 3 while effeciently working more 7IP or higher outings as the season wears on over any other member of the staff. But today? You can't jump him over Gallardo or Lohse. It will be them at the end of the season as Peralta's star shines bright that pass the torch saying Wily is the biggest reason we're here. He's our man to win Game 7.....Yadda,yadda...we wouldn't even be in this position if I'd have pitched better in Games 1 or 2. Just look at his numbers. And he should improve his K/9 rate. But that high GB and low Walk rate? You tell me how Wily doesn't just take over this staff as the #1 pitcher on the team. How Garza has a .5WAR to Wily's .1WAR at this point is beyond me? Are 4 more outs over 5 starts really worth that much in WAR even if it's at a higher ERA?

16-6. Best record in baseball. Not just this year but would be at this point last year. and we're 4.5 games ahead of last season to this point(19games though) 74-66 rest of the way to reach 90wins. (63-80) rest of 2013 from this date forward. I know it's early but that's what I look at. This team is better at pitching Starters and Bullpen. For as bad a team they were last year, we only need to win 11more games than that team from here on out to reach 90 wins. less than 1 more out of every 10 games.....I'll come back in 20 games to paint a picture where the team stands vs. '13. And pretty much give the impression how the Playoffs are in the works for this team after this start.
-
Just checking in on gamecast. A very Lohse-like outing going on. But how can one not be enthused by the fact that Davis his 2nd HR of the season? And Segura/Gennett have hit their firsts in this series? Fantastic outlook when these 3 are the outlying questions on this team's offense. We're going to be 16-6 and these 3 look to be warming up at the plate. I feel like we're better today than we were 2 days ago. It has to be scary facing this team.

Marco Estrada 2015 and beyond
brewcrewdue80 replied to Jose Cardenal1's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Plus, that really should be no surprise when you look at the dwindling amount of trade deadline deals lately. It's been lots of rumors around the league before the deadline, but then the deadline passes with mostly a yawn as few notable deals actually happen. I think the main reason for that is teams more and more loathe the idea of trading cost controlled highly regarded prospects at the deadline. Hell, it's not just at the deadline anymore. In general we see less quality prospects being traded away than in the past. Think about it this way. When I read this comment I immediately think to my Fantasy Baseball beginnings. 2010. And now. Dynasty/Keeper Leagues have grown. Just look at MLB.com and their Prospect rankings. 2010 Non-existent. 2011 it was a top 50 with a team's top 10. Then it happened 2012 a Top 100 list with top 20 for each team. Mike Trout and Bryce Harper emerged. And now the casual fan has easy access to what MLB.com opines is a top 100 prospect as well as top 20 prospect for an individual team. In 2010, not there. Fans know more about their prospects than in the past and the uproar from trading the future for a half season run at the playoffs GMs just can't get away with the moves as easily as before without a fan backlash. Add to it the QO vs. FA compensation of the past involvement. The C.C. Sabathia trade never happens for Milw in 2008 with the rules today because we don't get our draft pick when he departs. Meanwhile Cleveland would know they have a QO to offer C.C. so the return would be asked for higher prospects. It's swung the Prospect receiving team in to a better trade position in their ask for return. But at the same time also costs them trade partners due to the team trading for Garza for example last year to not be able to get compensation when he leaves via FA. So why lose your top prospect? Lose the player via FA? And be left with nothing to show for it if you don't win the WS? Meanwhile, sit at home GMs will be clamoring at how poor you are as a GM having made the (Grienke trade of 2012) So yeah, the trade deadline does look more bleak, not to mention the 2 added Playoff spots giving more teams a chance to make the playoffs and leave teams in a trade limbo whether they are sellers or buyers vs. a more concrete picture. Few things are going to happen that change this. The QO system is scrapped/changed. The trade deadline is pushed back. A number of prospects are going to fail/never get out of constantly being injured thus changing the opinion of the potential future impact they really will have and the make moves for this year's WS run takes over again. (btw Martin Perez our big hope to get from Texas, has now thrown b2b CG shutouts after an 8ip of 0s. and Olt is batting .195 with 762OPS and 4HRs for Cubs) Edit Add: What's this have to do with Estrada? Just honestlyput this there in response to that comment and to me just makes a thought of Estrada being traded this season? It won't happen. He's an offseason future trade only. What's Estrada's? worth? He's going to have this year to show it. If he makes 30 Starts this season and is a 3.7 or less ERA guy. All the arguments against his inability to pitch a full season becomes mute. And he does then have a higher value than we speculate. -
I like how someone goes and says Atl is better than Milw while looking up to Milw in the standings due to a 2-1 3game series win where a game was 1-0 in there favor? Yeah overall I think the Cards have us beat 1 vs. 1 but we were 3 games ahead of them(now 4) and these rankings come out every week. So more than likely we stay ahead of Stl. when this week is over. And that to me means we're deserving of being ranked ahead of them this week. As to the Oak A's being ranked 2nd instead of Milw? Well, somebody has to be ranked 1 and another 2. When they are in different Leagues does it really matter? Brewers get nod for best record and deserve #1. Oakland best in the AL #2. Power Rankings this early in the year don't mean squat but the fact that you get a little blurp from a team's reporter at least gives the outside fan a little insight on that particular team every week. Like Miggy batting .210 was it? with under .300OB and only 1HR for Det? Well that certainly won't remain the case for the year and Detroit's record likely improves as he goes back to normal. And Harang for Atl. He's not that good. Some kind of early season magic juice he's drinking. Here's a guy who avgs. 9+hits per 9 for his career and in 4 starts 25.2IP he's only given up 9hits on the season? Nevermind the .7ERA he's carrying for someone who's ERA hasn't been below 4 since 2007. So when I see Atlanta ranked up there, they need to feel damn lucky Harang has pitched lights out for a guy who typically is sent out for the slaughter as a team's last resort #5. The 3 wins they have from him are 3 more wins than you expect from him at this point.

Figaro recalled; Wooten optioned
brewcrewdue80 replied to djoctagone's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I liked Figaro last year. I thought he may have been the 8th inning guy with Henderson closing prior to signing KRod. The move has to be just for a fresh arm and its smart. So the OMG Wang kills us people due to wearing out RPs. Well here you go. Interchanging Wooten and Figaro every time there's a need for a fresh arm. Who here believe Milw will win at a .750 clip for the season? Wang will get his innings when we're behind and give the bullpen rest on those days. Plus with our Starting 5, I have a hard time believing that not one of them won't go 7 or more in 10 game span. Anyway back to Figaro. As a RP last year 49IP 2.94ERA in 28appearances. Solid option to have in that pen. -
Seriously? Chase Headley? Take his Freak good year away from him and he's going to be below .750OPS turning 30 shortly. We have ARam. What's the point of acquiring a 3b? No reason to even speculate on Headley for this season. 3b is ARam's for 2014 and 2015.

Marco Estrada 2015 and beyond
brewcrewdue80 replied to Jose Cardenal1's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
What would I give up for Estrada? Depends which team's home ballpark he's going to. I've said it multiple times, Estrada's Flyball/HR tendencies hurt his numbers pitching in HR friendly MP. Where would I put a prospect value on him? How about just comparing the deadline trade last year of Bud Norris. A minor league long shot Josh Hader, a Major League Starting OF LJ Hoes and a competitive balance pick. There's no doubt in my mind Estrada is a better pitcher than Norris. Finding a current top 100 prospect ranking player for Estrada is tough. I wouldn't give a team a top 100 prospect who's 20years or younger away for Marco. And just looking over the rankings, the teams with 70s-100 ranked prospects don't match up very well. A guy like Zach Lee doesn't help the roster being another #3/4 Pitcher. And then other teams have HR friendly parks or have SSs to offer. And you have none playoff contenders Houston/Cubs so they aren't trading for Marco. So going beyond the 100 rankings.... a matchup I'd look at would be: San Fran offering Chris Stratton or Adalberto Mejia Toronto offering up Dan Norris San Diego offering up Joe Ross Washington offering up Matt Purke I mean I don't know. It's just the teams I like Marco to pitch for would be: San Diego, NYM, Washington, Miami, Philly, Toronto, Seattle, Oakland, Minnesota, Anaheim, LA, San Fran Wow, felt like less than 12 teams but still it's hard to find a matchup of Prospect going by today's rankings. You're not going to get a team's top 2 or 3 Prospects (unless its from a poor system) And, in the case of NYM,Mia,Philly,Minn they are offseason trade with teams. It's tough. There's OFs to pick from at or about ML ready and we have no room for them. There are Ace/#2 type Pitching prospects I can't fathom trading away, and there's #3/4 Pitchers that are close to ML ready who we don't room for. SSs a plenty or Catchers but we're covered there. What you don't have are good 1b/2b/3b prospects to matchup with unless we're talking Boston who's ballpark I believe doesn't make Estrada a good fit. Same thing with trading with Texas. Ultimately, I'd say San Fran or San Diego are Marco's best fits. Minnesota and Miami if they decided to win a few more games. Philly and Toronto but Philly won't give up Franco and they have nobody else worth offering. Toronto has upside guys I don't know they'd offer Osuna/Norris. I'll just keep rooting for Estrada as a Brewer for 2014 and let the Nelson/Jungmann/Hellweg/Thornburgs force the issue to trade him.
