  1. With apologies to Larry Walker & Vlad Guerrero there is no one else I'd have play RF on my all time "Own Two Eyes" team besides Ichiro. Another favorite famous Ichiro quote would have to be, “To tell the truth, I’m not excited to go to Cleveland, but we have to,” Ichiro said. “If I ever saw myself saying I’m excited going to Cleveland, I’d punch myself in the face, because I’m lying.” And of course the best Ichiro quotes have never been captured as he supposedly gave a profanity laced speech in English to get the AL All Stars fired up before some of the Midsummer's Classics which he participated in. There's also a wealth of Ichiro stuff on youtube including many of the commercials he did for the Mariners TV broadcasts plus my all time favorite which I've linked below compiling some his greatest moments in Japan with scorching riffs accompanying in the background... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwM7LFl_PJM
  2. I will say this, the fact that Junior Guerra (a 31 year old former catcher who was out of affiliated baseball for multiple years) is the best pitcher on this team is probably thee MOST "Milwaukee Brewers" thing of all time. I will also say this, that split nasty.
  3. Apparently he just turned 32 so I'm going to guess teams won't want to go more than 3-4 years. Maybe 50 million, that'd be paying for what, about 6-7 WAR at current FA rates?
  4. AP put together the below list of the largest contracts signed by Cuban players as of May 2015... Rusney Castillo $72.5, Yasmany Tomas $68.5, Jose Abreu $68, Hector Olivera $62.5, Yasiel Puig $42, Yoenis Cespedes $36, Jorge Soler $30, Aroldis Chapman $30.25, Alex Guerrero $28, Raisel Iglesias $27, Arisbel Arruebarrena $25. Of those eleven contracts you've got Rusney, Yasmany, Olivera, Guerrero & Arruebarrena looking like major sunk costs. Soler & Raisel are probably still in the red but could get back to even in time. Puig & Abreu have probably provided enough value to offset the investment but are both trending downward for the second consecutive season. Yoenis & Aroldis are certified stars. Granted this list doesn't include Moncada who is off to a blazing start after his 31.5 million dollar payday, but he also hasn't played in AA yet. It also goes without saying that highly compensated prospects of all socio-economic-geo-political origins bust, but there is a big difference between paying Rolando Pascual 750 grand, or Eric Arnett 1.2 million, or Jed Bradley 2 million, or Mark Rogers 2.2 million, or maybe even hopefully not Gilbert Lara 3.2 million to bust as opposed to paying someone 25-72.5 million to maybe provide future value. I'll second Brew4U in that I don't believe any observations about Cubans can be deemed racist as Cubans are not a race of people.
  5. Hoping Span welcomes Garza to 2016 with a leadoff bunt.
  6. Maybe it's a classification issue, but PitchFX has Peralta throwing his 4 seamer 34.4% of the time, his 2 seamer 32.2% of the time, his slider 27.5% of the time & his change up 5.9% of the time for his career so it would seem he throws his 4 & 2 seamers with similar frequency, at least according to the high powered cameras & computers.
  7. I don't think a sinker can ever be called a straight fastball. His certainly isn't. His problem isn't due to his fastball being too straight. It's a combination of him throwing it in the wrong location and his secondary pitches haven't come around. For what it's worth, PitchFX has Peralta throwing both two seam & four seam fastballs. The biggest issue does seem to be the slider, though. When Wily was decent in 2013 & 2014 he was getting positive results on the slider (+6.2 & +2.3), the last two years those results have cratered (-2.6 in 2015 & -6.8 this year in only 66 innings).
  8. How does the run scoring environment in which Green's numbers were accrued compare to the run scoring environment in which Ray has just participated?
  9. I think it's a little too early to say Stearns sold low on Segura. His OPS was a season high 1.613 on April 8th & is a season low .833 and falling as of today. Last time he put together a couple two tree hundred at bats this good we saw what kind of production he followed it up with for the next 2 1/2 years. In regards to Nottingham & Diaz not being elite prospects, that's to be expected as neither was traded for an elite player.
  10. I'm fine with intentional walk change. As exciting as it is when a pitcher airmails a pitch it rarely happens. For the strike zone I just wish they'd go with the robots already.
  11. Out of players with at least 50 PA's Colin Walsh's 22.2% walk rate is the 3rd highest in all of MLB right behind Harper & Goldschmidt. Add in his 31.5% K rate and his 3TO% is a solid 53.7% even without any home runs. Forget the three true outcomes, Walsh is blazing the trail for TWO true outcome players.
  12. The 2021 option is only for 15 million dollars, if a team wants Braun badly enough I don't see guaranteeing that standing in the way of a deal. I'd offer to pay the rest of his salary this year for any acquiring team & if they want more of a financial kicker (& are prepared to give up more prospect capital in turn of course) I'd offer to cover the deferred payments, which is another 18 million. That would leave the total remaining after this season for any acquiring team at 4/58 or 5/73 with the option, which is in the range of money that Zobrist & Gordon got this last offseason.
  13. It's still early of course but Carter's plate discipline numbers this year are much improved. Carter is swinging at a lower percentage of pitches overall (41.3 vs 45.9 career) both inside (64.8 vs 70.1 career) and outside (19.7 vs 27.0 career) of the zone. Meahwhile his contact % is a career best 69.4 against a career mark of 65.2. While I don't think he'll finish the season with a wRC+ in the 150's like he's been carrying so far I can see him leveraging these gains to settle in closer to the 137 he posted in 2012 vs the 112 he posted from 2013-15.
  14. I'm in the camp of keeping Blazek, Thornburg & Smith in the bullpen. Blazek & Thornburg are already pretty meh as relievers, expose them to a lineup a second time around & I don't think it would be pretty. Smith has at least shown the capacity to be dominant at times, but he's also faded in the second half each of the last two years. Maybe it's easier to throw 200 innings over 32 evenly spaced outings than it is to throw 65 in randomly spaced 1 IP intervals, but at this point I'd rather keep him in the pen when he returns from injury.
  15. The Brewers won 96 games in 2011 even with Yuni (-0.1 WAR) & McGehee (-0.3 WAR) receiving the 3rd & 4th most plate appearances on the team. The Royals won the World Series in 2015 with Omar Infante contributing -0.9 WAR in 455 PA's. The 2011 Cardinals gave Ryan Theriot (0.2 WAR) & Skip Schumacher (0.3 WAR) 400 PA's each & had no problem winning the WS. The 2007 WS Champion Boston Red Sox gave Julio Lugo, he of the 0.4 WAR, the 3rd most plate appearance on the team with 630. Even the best teams typically have a terrible player or two that plays plenty.
  16. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/finding-a-trade-partner-for-ryan-braun/ Dave Cameron speculates upon possible Braun suitors today.
  17. I will second Stokes. Was really impressed by him when I went out to Helena/Missoula for a few games last summer. Definitely seemed like he had an idea up at the plate and that has showed up in his walk rate so far. Also did not think he looked that much smaller than Trent Clark even though their listed height/weight can be pretty far apart depending on which source you use.
  18. Something else to keep in mind with the CBA expiring between now and Lucroy's slated free agency is that there may not even be a qualifying offer system in place anymore by the time Luc hits the free agent market.
  19. Not surprised by the conservative placements in the least. Stearns brought over former Rays Director of Player Personnel Matt Arnold to be his assistant GM and TB has always been one of the most conservative organizations when it comes to promoting prospects.
  20. What about Hader, Phillips, Taylor, Davies & Reed then? They all appear set to repeat levels this season too.
  21. I really like Clark too, but there's always the chance his unique grip doesn't play against more advanced competition as he faces better velocity/movement more consistently. Even if it does play, with his stature and approach he probably never developes anything more than league average power. On top of that he doesn't appear to have the top end range needed for CF or the top end arm needed for RF, so is probably best suited for LF. My major league comp would be Nori Aoki with hopefully a tick more speed, pop & glove.
  22. Count me firmly in the "please no Scooter against LHP" camp. Over the last three seasons 458 batters have at least 100 plate appearances against LHP. Scooter is dead last, 458th out of 458 with a .135 wOBA. If you think it's unfair to include all the righties in the sample Scooter is 126th out of 126 lefties. For comparison, Ike Davis is 457th/125th & he has a .182 wOBA, almost 50 points higher. That's like the difference between Miguel Cabrera & Kendrys Morales, but on the opposite end of the spectrum. 60 pitchers have at least 100 plate appearances over the last 3 years. 40 of them have a wOBA higher than Scooter's .135 vs LHP. League average wOBA for pitchers the last three years has been .152, .141 & .147.
  23. That is pretty uncanny. Another one I noticed is that journeyman pitcher Roberto Hernandez looks just like an older, fatter version of Fausto Carmona that used to be on the Indians.
  24. I think at this point Maldonado, Walsh, Rivera & Flores are locked in for bench spots. If they break camp with 13 pitchers that's a full roster. If they go with 12 I think my preference for the last bench spot would be Nieuwenhuis.
  25. Where was Lucroy's wife when this happened?
