  1. Obviously you never wish injury on anyone but if you were gonna tell me that at least one projected regular wouldn't be ready to go for opening day I would have hoped it was Corey as we at least have some semblance of depth at the 3.
  2. The Nationals have the money to spend and Soriano over the last 3 years has been one of the top bullpen arms in the game. Losing the draft pick/money might hurt a little but it's at the very back end of the first round (wouldn't be surprised if they're picking around there again next year) and they just got A.J. Cole back for Michael Morse so that certainly softens the blow significantly.
  3. I'd think the best we could hope for from SEA would be James Paxton who is generally the least regarded of their big 3 pitching prospects and even then we might have to throw something else in to even things out.
  4. Just looking at the "Modern Brewers Playoff Era" here is a list of playoff teams with their rank in team salary and a WSC for each year's World Series Champion. I just bounced back and forth between bref.com for playoff teams and stevehump.com for salary info if anyone wants to go back through the whole wild card era that can crunch the numbers more effectively that myself. 2012: NYY (1st), DET (5th), TEX (6th), SF (8th, WSC), STL (9th), ATL (16th), CIN (17th), BAL (19th), WAS (20th) & OAK (29th) 2011: NYY (1st), PHI (2nd), DET (10th), STL (11th, WSC), TEX (13th), MIL (17th, we were 10th in 2012 for reference), ARI (25th) & TB (29th). 2010: NYY (1st), PHI (4th), SF (10th, WSC), MIN (11th), ATL (15th), CIN (19th), TB (21st) & TEX (27th). 2009: NYY (1st, WSC), BOS (4th), LAA (6th), PHI (7th), LAD (9th), STL (13th), COL (18th) & MIN (24th). 2008: BOS (4th), CHW (5th), LAA (6th), LAD (7th), CHC (8th), PHI (12th, WSC), MIL (15th) & TB (29th). Make of it what you will but the info above seems to indicate that while outspending everyone else by a wide margin is a pretty effective strategy (NYY), ultimately what matters the most is being a well run organization. For instance Texas making it the last three years ranking 27th, 13th and 6th. Having a higher payroll ultimately really only increases your margin for error, it doesn't guarantee success in and of itself.
  5. Came across this while catching a gnarly internet wave and thought I would share with any potentially interested bf.netters... http://www.mearsonlineauctions.com/lotdetail.aspx?lotid=52574
  6. Of all the teams in the NL Central I think the Brewers definitely have the bleakest long term outlook at this point. Sure we have Braun and a few other nice young pieces but compare that to the Cardinals who have the strongest MLB squad and a very top heavy farm system. The Reds have also outdeveloped the Brewers lately while still fielding a slightly more talented MLB squad. Sure the Cubs and Pirates haven't threatened us at the MLB level recently but both have far more young talent and heaven't completely whiffed on their last four or five drafts like we have.
  7. I really like Gamel. The thing I was looking forward to more than anything else about the Brewers 2011 season was that he was finally gonna get his chance and he was gonna get 600 plate appearances to either sink or swim. And then what happened happened. And as much as I still believe in the guy I just can't see how he has any value around the league.
  8. Seeing as the Brewers don't have a top 100, much less a top 20 prospect, I guess we don't have to worry about Doug trading for guys like Dickey. I don't care how old the guy is he has the 13th best WHIP and 11th best ERA in all of baseball over the last three years combined.
  9. I really like this move for the Blue Jays. For all the hype Toronto's farm system gets they haven't developed anybody yet. AL East should be a lot of fun to follow this year.
  10. If Ken Burns is to be believed Baseball is a mirror of American society at large. As such, it seems only natural that the gap between the haves and have nots continues to grow in the sport. The easy fix is to split local TV revenues. Nobody is gonna tune it to watch one team. Say the Dodgers get 250 million a year as reported. They keep 125 million with the other half getting split between their opponents in proportion to the number of televised games they played against the Dodgers. Seems easy enough to me.
  11. Given what free agents are getting these days and assuming a relatively healthy 2013 from Corey, I see no way he accepts a QO. He is three years younger and has been far more consistent/productive than Adam LaRoche who is seeking and likely to receive a multi year deal. I think Corey gets taken for granted to some extent, while not an elite hitter he has ranked 24th in wOBA, 27th in wRC+ and 20th in batting runs in all of MLB over the course of the last 3 seasons.
  12. I think Clemens and Bonds will get, but the writers will make them sweat for a few years. I don't think Sosa ever makes it.
  13. The best player in the league doesn't always win MVP and it spans the history of baseball. In the early days I believe there was even an unwritten rule that no one could win twice. Kemp had a better year than Braun last year. Braun had a better year than Posey this year. Trout had a better year than Cabrera this year. Arguments could be made for a few position players having better years than Verlander last year. And so on. If guys that voted for Bonds leave Braun off the ballot it won't surprise me, it is the BBWAA after all.
  14. There have now been 18 World Series in the "Wild Card Era" and thus 18 World Series Champions. Said victorious teams are listed subsequently based on what place they finished in overall MLB standings during their respective banner years. First (3) : 1998 Yankees, 2007 Red Sox & 2009 Yankees. Second (2) : 1995 Braves & 2005 White Sox. Third (3) : 1996 Yankees, 1999 Yankees & 2004 Red Sox. Fourth (3) : 1997 Marlins, 2002 Angels & 2012 Giants. Fifth (2) : 2008 Phillies & 2010 Giants. Sixth (1) : 2001 Diamondbacks. Seventh (1) : 2003 Marlins. Eighth (1) : 2011 Cardinals. Ninth (1) : 2000 Yankees. Thirteenth (!) : 2006 Cardinals. I don't know a quick way to measure the "veteran" composition of each team relative to the other teams in that year's playoff field but it seems like this list supports the notion of "anything can happen" with an added caveat of "being one of the best four teams in MLB in any given year certainly helps kinda." Also, R.A. Dickey is pretty neat.
  15. Yo is for sure the #1. Out of Fiers, Estrada, Rogers, Peralta, Thornburg and Burgos you have a good pool of internal candidates for those 3-5 spots. The big issue I see is that we need another premium arm to pair with Yo. Maybe someday Peralta or Rogers can be that guy but counting on it for next year is a pretty big leap of faith and one I just can't see Melvin taking next year with how close this team is to contention.
  16. Met a guy who works for this company at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore this year and he seemed like a good guy. SoCal, if you could post a review on the picture/sound quality would definitely be curious to hear what you think.
  17. It seems more and more likely that DMGM is going to bring in at least one veteran arm this offseason to solidify the starting rotation and give us some insurance on our young arms. As there is already a thread discussing some free agents I thought I'd start one for possible trade targets. The one I'll throw out there is Jon Lester. His contract is essentially 2/25 at this point which is cheaper than any of the second tier (Please no Lohse, Jackson, Dumpster) free agents you might be able to sign while also likely providing more upside. He is also left handed and we have no left handed pitching prospects of note anywhere in sight so far as I can tell. Who are some guys you might like to see/think DMGM will pursue this winter?
  18. I'm 34 and it's Trout without a doubt. 326/399/564 & 330/393/606 are essentially a wash. When the best hitter in the league is a terrible defender and baserunner and the second best hitter in the league is an elite defender at a premium position and the best baserunner in the league that is more than enough to make up for 36 points of OPS in my mind.
  19. Well in that case, one million thanks to you rluz. That video never fails to crack me up in so many regards.
  20. Oh really? You like that? You think that's funny? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5190945166059857006
  21. Don't forget we're the best at giving the defense free outs too!
  22. Fangraphs has an interesting article today about Japanese reliever Kyuji Fujikawa. Could be a possibility for bullpen WOAH SOLVDD. Gotta figure the recent success of Saito and Aoki could only help... http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/kyuji-fujikawa-japans-mariano-rivera/#more-98813
  23. Colby Rasmus is 7 for 8 on bunt hits this year. Ichiro Suzuki is 1 for 8. Edwin Encarnacion hits a higher percentage of flyballs than any other qualified batter yet has as many infield hits as Mike Trout.
  24. What thebruce44 said. Fangraphs has Braun 4th in MLB with 36.7 batting runs and Willingham 10th at 28.5. WAR is far from perfect as a whole but the batting component (as calculated by Fangraphs at least) is certainly not an issue.
  25. Whatever it was that Roenicke did last year to make sure KRod and Axford never blew a lead he clearly needs to do again this year.
