  1. Yah, I might have done this one, although the Reds probably could offer more guaranteed playing time and an even more hitter-friendly park as he eyes his next deal. Matching the deal might not have been enough. Plus signing a one-year deal means that even if you don’t sign with a contender in December you will be on one in September if you play well.
  2. Not having anything on Cruz and Cornielle seems weird, but among the most interesting things about Fangraphs’ rankings are always the notes from instructs. Also, nice to see someone else ranking Areinamo that highly.
  3. Given the amount of time they have been in the system, I wonder if Vassalotti, Garabitos or Morales start in AA.
  4. Yah, it seems like they hope they get selected in the minor league phase and when they don’t…
  5. I’d kind of split the difference. Sign Myers or someone similar. If Mitchell and Frelick are playing well, he platoons with Tellez and Winker. If not, and Wiemer isn’t ready, he is a decent backup plan. I would start the two of them to start the season, though. I think there is a decent chance that Turang starts the season in AAA with Toro getting first crack at third. Assuming he is playing well, though, he would be my first call up from AAA.
  6. Since everyone is tossing out their pick for next Suter, I will say Adam Seminaris.
  7. To be fair, the projection system Fangraphs uses projects him to be better than Vazquez next season. This feels like too much, but with Vazquez getting the third year, it doesn’t surprise me. Not many catchers who have hit at some point and aren’t that old out there.
  8. It is so nice over the last few years that the Brewers have gotten to the point where discussing DSL pitchers doesn't feel like a waste of time. Possibly none of them are listed here depending on where Briceno and Wagoner start out, but for a second year in a row I am going to find the pitching results from Carolina fascinating. Between rounds 5 and 11 last year the Brewers drafted a D-II pitcher, a four-year JUCO pitcher, a pitcher who missed a lot of time with injuries and a pitcher who was academically ineligible in his draft year. Toss in the former DSL guys who were called up toward the end of last season (Vallecillo, Herrera and Gonzalez); if healthy, a guy who would have been called up last year (Aquino) and a guy who was in 2021 (Brailin Rodriguez); and a potential holdover or two from last season and you have an interesting but potentially erratic collection, not even considering the highest upside arm in the system. If three of those guys could emerge the way Rodriguez, Cruz and Cornielle did last season along with the hoped-for progress from Misiorowski, it would really help balance a hitter-heavy system.
  9. The case for Myers is that he is a righty who hits lefties well and could be a decent platoon bat at a relatively low price point.
  10. Maybe I am wrong, but isn’t range factor one of the defensive stats that they used to say only stabilized after a couple of seasons’ worth of data?
  11. This seems like a lot of angst over someone who currently projects as the new Pablo Reyes.
  12. And sometimes guys with those tools improve. Especially on the pitching side. Heck, Cam Robinson was protected this year after not last year because he made those improvements. On the hitting side, Manny Pina was never a star but provided value to the Brewers. He was initially a PTBNL in order to make sure he wasn’t taken in the rule 5. If you see major league traits in a guy, that is a non-negligible value. No one is claiming he is an elite prospect, but it sounds like he might have a better chance than most minor league relievers.
  13. I am thinking about doing something about very under the radar prospects who have something intriguing about them closer to spring training. Raabe is on the list for his combination of contact and line drive rates.
  14. Didn't one of the articles mention they had been trying to get him from the Padres last year before the Hader trade took place?
  15. Don’t get me wrong, I really like this trade, but I think the surprising nature of the trade is down to a couple of things: 1. Contreras didn’t have the value that you would expect given the stats and control. The Braves never really seemed sold on him as their catcher of the future. 2. Excepting Misiorowski, Ruiz probably would have the largest range in evaluation of any of the Brewers’ top prospects (or in his case former top prospects). I wouldn’t be surprised if the median was around where he is generally ranked, but there are aspects there, especially after last season, that a team could fall in love with.
  16. The Rays are one of the last teams you should trade with if you are looking to clearly “win” the trade, but this turned out fine for both teams. Two things to consider: 1. There is a good chance the Brewers, because of Rasmussen’s injury history, would have never moved him into the rotation. He might be getting ready to slot into the eighth inning role this year if he was with the Brewers. 2. If you look at Rasmussen’s stats with the Brewers vs. the Rays you would think you were looking at two different pitchers. Maybe going from a high strikeout, high walk guy to a low strikeout, low walk guy was a byproduct of the move to the rotation, but there is no guarantee that this version of Rasmussen is who he would have been with the Brewers.
  17. Maybe I will be wrong, and there have been some absurdly long contracts given out this year, but recent history would suggest Vasquez isn’t going to get the long term deal he is seeking. It has been almost a decade since a catcher of Vasquez’s age and caliber got more than two years. Maybe the weak catching market gets him three, but I would wager it is more likely he settles for two than gets four.
  18. Has there been any indication any team is willing to give him Vazquez 4 years? He would be the oldest catcher to get more than 2 years since Carlos Ruiz, and I think the only non-star catcher to get more than two in the last five or so years, McCann, has turned out badly enough that it should serve as a giant warning sign.
  19. For the second year in a row Kekai Rios got picked in the minor league Rule 5 draft.
  20. I know what you are going for, but I think Toro starting against righties to start the year can be justified as more than a service time thing, and I think it is going to happen. It seems as if with the shift going away, the Brewers are targeting lefties with lower strikeout rates but low BABIPs thinking those players could be value plays this season. Toro is in that category. Are they outsmarting themselves? Perhaps. But the reasoning seems sound enough where I have no problem with them testing it.
  21. Am I the only one who thinks Turang starts the season in triple-A? C: TBA/Caratini 1B: Tellez/TBA Righty 2B: Urias SS: Adames 3B: Toro/Brosseau OF: Yelich/Mitchell/Frelick/Taylor DH: Winker
  22. They have a way of surprising me, but I think they have three more moves: 1. Find a starting catcher. This is the top priority. 2. Sign a righty who hits lefties well. Drury might be ideal, but I think someone along the lines of Wil Myers is more likely. 3. Maybe add one more reliever.
  23. I had forgotten as well that they eliminated the AA phase (for players that weren’t even protected at the AA level) a few years ago. So you are right, just minor league portion now.
  24. I’d assume the paper minor league rosters right now in no way resemble the posted ones. It wouldn’t surprise me if, because he isn’t eligible, Joey Wiemer is technically a Timber Rattler until after the draft. There are definitely more guys on that list who seem at least close to roster locks than 38, so theoretically there could be players picked in the AAA phase. At the same time, though, thanks to the pandemic season and us not yet reaching the point where most of the Latin American signings will get an extra season before being eligible, I am guessing a lot of teams’ lists are similar.
  25. I don’t trust the committee to not take Alabama if TCU loses, but the four spots really should be locked right now. If KSU beats TCU, that automatically makes their earlier game a better win than any Bama has and TCU also beat the highest ranked team Bama has beaten.
