  1. I've never heard of any team borrowing against the value of the franchise. All investments as far as I have read are equity based. And then you get into a situation like the dodgers where the team is keeping payroll down to satisfy the promised returns to investors. I also agree with other posters who have pointed out that finishing in the red is likely just accounting talk and not really indicative of the financial health of the franchise, the cashflow, or their ability to increase payroll. Ultimately I don't care how much the team spends on payroll. I want to watch a team capable of making the playoffs. This team right now has some foundational pieces of a playoff contender and it would be a shame if the brewers don't continue to add to the roster to supplement that foundation that probably only lasts another 3 seasons.
  2. I'm interested in Donaldson. I'd rather have Rendon on the longer deal though. (both are unlikely). Donaldson is one of 5 elite free agents this season though. I'd be cool with a 3 year deal between $60mm-70mm. If brings us to the end of the Yelich and Cain contracts and locks down a position of no organizational depth for 3 years.
  3. I said this in an earlier thread about Narvaez, but I was skeptical that he'd be a Brewers target given how he has graded out as a pitch framer. The bat is intriguing enough though. Seems like a reasonable platoon with Manny behind the plate. Obviously I wish Grandal was re-signed, but this doesn't seem to be the end of the world. Also likely cheaper than Avila or Castro who were two FA options. Waiting for this Rendon to Brewers announcement any day now.
  4. I think this is a fine deal for Wheeler. Probably an extra year than I was expecting, but roughly the AAV I was thinking. I think the Nationals deal for Patrick Corbin last offseason was a better contract. Honestly, if the Brewers were actually willing to spend big money on a starting pitcher (they probably aren't) they should just sign Cole or Strasburg. No point in paying premium dollars for the middle- upper middle class starters.
  5. lol, just based on the time you're posting and given how dramatic it is you were probably listening to casey stern. I mean this in the most respectful way possible... the guy is a blowhard moron.
  6. His wife was in my high school graduating glass. Hopefully he catches on.
  7. I have no idea if it will be with the Brewers, but something similar to the deal Wainwright signed last winter could be interesting for Nelson. $2mm base with $8mm in possible incentives. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/st.-louis-cardinals/adam-wainwright-802/ Games Started Bonus: 5: $500,000 10: $1M 15: $1M 20: $1.5M 25: $2M 30: $2M Relief Appearances: $500,000 each for 35,40,45,50,55,60 Games Finished $500,000 each for 25, 30 $600,000 each for 35, 40,45,50,55
  8. UGH! None of those players are a needle mover for a team with a weak offense trying to get to the playoffs. Kendrick, maybe, the rest are guys who are just guys... I agree, but this is a thread about CJ Cron. A thread about likely platoon bats and such. These guys are just floor raisers. It would obviously be incredibly disappointing for the Brewers to only add a few low tier free agents to fill out the roster. But hey, maybe they'll sign Rendon or Donaldson and 3rd base depth becomes less important.
  9. Personally, if the Brewers add a veteran right handed bat for the corner infield I'd want it to be someone who can play 3rd base too. Todd frazier is my preference. Howie Kendrick maybe, but he might be flying high on the post season run. Switch hitters like Sandoval and Cabrera could fill that role too. Jedd Gyorko on a minor league deal maybe.
  10. Yes I'd be interested. With the 26th roster spot and the Brewers trimming a lot of the major league roster depth it gives them the opportunity to pursue players at just about any position right now and they can afford to target platoon types given that roster flexibility.
  11. I would say the Raptors, Celtics, and Utah games were good measuring sticks. Those are all good teams. I don't think any of those 3 teams are in the upper echelon of NBA title contenders. Maybe I'll be wrong about those teams, but I would bet the game Friday v the Clippers will be the highest intensity of the season so far for the Bucks.
  12. I liked Jay Jackson and he served a nice role on the Brewers last year. I believe Matt Pauley or JR Radcliffe interviewed him for their podcast during the season and I believe he got married to a Japanese woman while playing in the NPB and they have a son. It's possible that playing in Japan was better for him personally than playing in the MLB. A quick google search shows he made ~$2mm in 2018 in the NPB. If he got a similar deal this time around that's probably more than he would have earned in MLB in 2020.
  13. I'm a little surprised he's back. It will be interesting to see how the infield shakes out and if Arcia plays multiple positions or if he will mainly play SS and force other players to shift around when he's in the line up.
  14. I'm shocked Moustakas not only got that AAV, but 4 years. Good for him. It's also fun to see that taking that one year deal to play 2nd base for the Brewers actually did help his marketability this year. It's probably just coincidence, but it's weird to see the 3 big free agents from the Brewers sign early. I will miss rooting for Moustakas, but I'm not overly concerned with losing his production at this price. His production isn't irreplaceable.
  15. I'd prefer his primary role be as someone who goes 1-3 innings. They may need him to make some starts during the season, but how they used him coming back from TJS last season seemed to be perfect for him. He was effective and highly impacted winning games.
  16. I'm vehemently against trading Hader. Having said that, if the Brewers are willing do end up trading Hader it better be for a pre-arb position player who has already shown some success in the big leagues (not interested in a first baseman or second baseman though).
  17. Last season and this season have been very enjoyable. Especially after enduring the Jason Kidd years. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little concerned about the 3pt defense though. I understand that you can't stop everything and the Bucks do a great job of limiting shots in the restricted area and not fouling. That's the basis of why they have the #3 defensive rating per cleaning the glass. It does feel like they've been over helping and taking unnecessary risks recently which have lead to open threes both from the corner and above the break. I'd like to think the Bucks will be able to make adjustments if they run into a FVV like hot streak like they did last season, but Bud isn't exactly known as one to make big adjustments. I am looking forward to the Clippers game this week. Might be the first real measuring stick game of the season if PG and Kawhi both play.
  18. The more I've thought about this, I'm not sure it really matters who the other catcher is. I'm fine with Martin, Avila, Castro, Romine, and maybe Cervelli but his concussions worry me. Chirinos is probably the only starting caliber free agent left. His pitch framing grades out poorly so I'm not sure he's a fit with the Brewers. Only a theory, but the Astros may have been willing to deal with his poor framing because of the elite quality of their starting pitching.
  19. Posts like this are the perfect example of fans thinking the grass is greener. If Shaw hadn't been on the Brewers the last few years we'd be clamoring for the Brewers to add him if as a free agent hoping to he's a prime bounce back candidate. Shaw's 17-18 were better than Lamb's 16-17. Shaw has been healthy. Shaw grades out better defensively at 3rd. Shaw has proven to be capable at 2b if needed. Lamb is even worse vs LHP than Shaw. There's really nothing that leads me to believe Lamb will be good or healthy in 2020. If the Brewers were to gamble on one of these two players it absolutely should be Shaw.
  20. Not upset at all about this. At lends not draw too many conclusions on early free agent signings. Lance Lynn signed early last year for roughly the same deal and that didn't exactly cause the market to go wild for mid-back end rotation types.
  21. I'm a little surprised that Guerra will be non-tendered. He was reasonably successful out of the bullpen last year. I know some people on Twitter think this means they're more likely to non-tender other borderline guys, but I actually think it means they're more likely to tender a guy like Nelson. For roughly the same projected arb salary Nelson feels like the higher upside play. (Yes I know they could keep both players if they wanted).
  22. I'm cool with this trade. The Brewers desperately needed an upgrade at SS and Urias is almost certainly that. I'm bummed that Davies is going the other way though. I really enjoy watching him and he has long been one of my favorite Brewers players. Lauer slots right into the rotation though so they at least didn't lose depth even if they lost some quality. It will be interesting to see what they do leading up to the tender deadline. If Urias is going to be the starting SS, do they retain Arcia? Obviously a whole host of other players who are questionable as well.
  23. I wanted him back bad. Cishek is probably the FA reliever left who I really want if they're going to bring in a proven guy (unlikely).
  24. Based on the publicly available defensive catcher statistics I don't think Narvaez would be my preference as the primary catcher for the Brewers next season. The bat is certainly attractive though. I'm just not sure with the Brewers' overall pitching strategy you can afford to have a poor pitch framer being the main catcher.
  25. relax. the Brewers didn't make a notable transaction until 12/13 last off season when they traded for Claudio. Didn't sign a notable free agent until 1/14 with Grandal. It will be ok. They also didn't have as many holes to fill last year...this year you NEED a catcher, SS, 1B, TOR arm, 3B. And last year they "needed" a C, SS, 2b, TOR arm. so the difference is basically 1b? I agree that this team is less stable than it was at this point in 2018, but all of notable 4 free agents have signed and 3 of them were signed by 1 team. Maybe the early movement in the catcher market will force the Brewers to act early, but I wouldn't get too frustrated until the team reports to spring training.
