  1. He may not want to sit around on this though. Last year he turned down a similar contract and then ended up settling for a one year deal with the Dodgers. My guess is something like 3 years and $27 million total. While that's a decent contract, it shouldn't cripple the Brewers if he under performs, either.
  2. I posted about this in another thread, but Haudricourt said on his blog that the Brewers, "have no interest in Pierre." I wonder if a swap with the D-Backs for Eric Byrnes could be an option? Could be something to consider if they do trade Hart.
  3. Maybe that's when they should pull the trigger on a Suppan/Pierre swap if such a thing is possible. Not sure if I'm being sarcastic there or not. Edit: Actually Tom Haudricourt just posted that a Brewers official said they have "no interest in Pierre." So strike that one out.
  4. I'd do Bush for Sherrill in a second. Sherrill could possibly be the closer after Hoffman leaves/retires.
  5. He of the 4.60 ERA and 1.45 WHIP for the FOUR seasons leading up to 2009? That's still a huge upgrade over 4/5ths of last year's rotation.
  6. I think I would lean in favor of doing this trade, but I guess I would hope Melvin would still find one more pitcher as well as Mark Mulder. You probably can't count of Maine to go a whole season at this point.
  7. I hate to be the one stirring the pot on this stuff constantly (maybe I am just a rumor addict or something), but someone on the JSOnline blog (I know, I know) says that the Brewers have submitted an offer to Lackey (as have four other teams). The poster claims to have connections to someone in the league office. Says the Brewers' offer is the highest salary on average per year (but not the highest total contract offer). I guess at least it's good to think that they are making a run at him.
  8. Well, the Suppan signing was exciting at the time, but I get your point.
  9. I think you could argue that the way Riebes stated it implied he had some inside knowledge. Seems to be the popular thing to do on certain message board lately (not necessarily this one).
  10. Well, Melvin has shown a knack for finding serviceable scrap heap relievers, so I'm not going to worry too much at this point.
  11. Yeah, I was just coming to post that. Wonder what the reasoning is. They say 12 teams have made offers. Maybe Melvin feels they'd have to give up too much to get him.
  12. Would love to see it happen. I wonder what the Brewers would have to give up to get him so early in the hot stove season, though.
  13. Yeah, they seem to be. They shed a bunch of payroll last season (trading Peavy, etc) and seem intent on slashing further. They're in total rebuild mode at this point after their ownership change.
  14. That's probably more likely in my view, TLB. Lucroy (or Salome) could be up around the All-Star break if he mashes in AAA and Zaun/Kottaras is struggling.
  15. I think they know Looper was not good last year and know they need better pitchers than what he represents, if they possibly want to not only complete, but match 3 million fans again.
  16. I'm fine with Davis as long as he's not paid ridiculous money, and like you said TLB, not the better of the theoretical two pitchers Melvin has his eyes on. Haudricourt also wrote in his blog comments that he is now expecting the Brewers to sign Davis. He also says, "Davis would like to return to Milwaukee". So it sounds like this will not be surprising if it happens.
  17. Pierre is one of those guys where using OPS doesn't tell the whole story. We all know he has no power. Imagine having him and Escobar on the base paths, though. Base stealing havoc like crazy. Of course, it would be up to Macha to actually let them steal, but that's a separate topic. I would rather have Pierre than Suppan at this point, personally. I would also not shed any tears if Jody Gerut was DFAed (or non-tendered, whatever). If the Dodgers could even out the dollars a bit, I think it could work.
  18. Well, if Melvin can't somehow rectify the situation during the off-season, he should be fired anyway. We can't go into 2010 with Suppan as an integral part of the rotation like last season. "Hope is not a plan."
  19. Bring it on winter. I bought gas for my snowblower, and I'm ready for ya!
  20. MLB Trade Rumors has speculation about the Dodgers dealing Juan Pierre in a three team trade and netting Jeff Suppan.
  21. Any chance Michael and Erin's bonding moment leads to them dating and Andy getting jealous? Probably not, but it's just an off the wall thought I had.
  22. Can you imagine the day when the Brewers have to worry about the luxury tax? Yeah, me either.
  23. Haudricourt seemed to insinuate recently that the Brewers are counting it (Hall's salary) in their payroll, and really, why wouldn't they? It's not like that money doesn't factor into the budget now that he's with another club.
  24. Jeff Suppan should be ashamed of himself.
  25. I'm not advocating Braun should be moved to RF. I just get tired of how bad some seem to make his defense out to be. He's not a liability defensively at this point, and chance are he'll continue to learn and grow into a better defensive player as he matures.
