Do we know of any deadlines yet for the offseason - qualifying offers, opt-outs, non-tender, etc? Or do those not get set until after the World Series?
The big question is who they consider to be the "core." It's hard to imagine them bringing back virtually the same team. Not going to happen so this is mostly GM speak as usual with Stearns.
It's going to be fascinating to see what they end up doing with Burnes this offseason. I've really gone back and forth on whether they should trade him this offseason and get maximum value or wait a bit and try to make one last run before you have to unload him. I think they'll hold onto him and either trade him during the deadline if we're struggling or next offseason. Either way, it's going to be painful having to trade a guy like Burnes.
I would be shocked if they let Renfroe walk for nothing. If they don't want to pay him that kind of money, I think they'll just trade him and will probably get something halfway decent in return. Someone will want him.
Thanks for posting this list. My locks would be Renfroe, Woodruff, Bush, Adames, Gott, Burnes, Lauer, Tellez, Urias, Milner, Williams and Hiura. Really up in the air on the rest. Will be interesting to see what they end up doing with this bunch.
I'm glad you said something because I thought the same thing. I had to do a double take when I didn't see Frelick's name in that list. Just ridiculous.
Yeah I agree on the new shifting rules and whether that will really help Yelich that much. He hits a TON of weak grounders to the right side so not sure how those turn into base hits next year. Sure the laser shot grounders could get through but he doesn’t hit a ton of those. I’d be interested in some data though.
Moving Yelich to a mostly DH role should be the easiest decision of the offseason. With guys like Mitchell, Wiemer, Frelick, and Ruiz, who are all very good outfielders, there's no reason to stick Yelich's terrible defense out there anymore.
Do they usually wait until after the AFL to release end of year prospect rankings? I'm really curious to see who lands in the top 100 for the Brewers. You'd have to think Chourio and Frelick are locks with guys like Turang, Wiemer, Quero, Gasser, and Misiorowski also being possbilities.
I voted for playing the young guys. Not saying we need to run out an entire team of rookies but all of these guys are high draft picks and have had successful minor league careers. There’s not much else they can do in AAA. There is going to be some struggles for sure, especially early on but their time is now.
For me, the issue was NOT trading Hader. It was not acquiring a bat. And the bat they did acquire (Ruiz), spent the last two months in Nashville. Not sure what Stearns was thinking there. He traded for a couple of good bullpen arms who did not work out...again. The deadline was just an epic fail all around.
We certainly don’t need to do a full rebuild but I would welcome a shake up of sorts, especially with the offense. Let the young outfielders play, move Yelich to DH, shore up the catcher position, trade for or sign an adequate corner IF, etc. There’s lots of things Stearns can do this offseason so we’ll see.
First thing I’m doing this offseason is trading Tyrone Taylor for whatever we can get. This shouldn’t be a difficult decision. We’ve got a bunch of young outfielders who are ready to go and Taylor should in no way be blocking any of them. Then, I’m calling up Yelich and telling him to be prepared to play mostly DH going forward. This opens up two outfield spots for Frelick and Mitchell and Ruiz replaces Taylor as the 4th outfielder. Keep Renfroe to provide some veteran leadership.
